I have ran water for 20 years. I have always ran soft tubing and Valvoline Zerex at a 10/90 ratio to distilled water. I'm still running the same Laing D5 Vario pump and Swiftech MCR-220 radiator in my current PC that I bought in 2004 to build my first loop. I have never had any of the problems Jay has, and I have to assume he continues to use garbage pre-mixed PC coolants despite all the problems solely for views and controversy in the comments. If you use automotive anti-freeze and EPDM based soft tubing, your loop will last indefinitely, and you can feel free to push maintenance periods out to ~5 years, or just whenever you do upgrades or a new build.

When it comes from people who spends more time making their tools look like a kids toy than they do using it, its a compliment. A PC is a tool, and what makes a good tool, is everything but looks. Every single dollar and every minute spent on RGB, parts with custom paint job, chrome finish and what not, could have gone towards improving reliability, performance, maintenance free operation, memory compatibility and QC of bios and drivers. Time spent by end user could have been spent on improving and/or acquiring new skills. Be it gaming, engineering or general life skills. In short: They would have been smarter and they would have had a faster, more more reliable PC. @Jay: Shame on you for encouraging the bright but easily influenced young people to this.. WOMBAT.

This is why I don't bother water cooling anything anymore. Water cooling is really just air cooling with extra steps (because the heat ultimately has to go into the air for rejection to the ambient environment) and, frustratingly, a lot of extra stupid and extra expensive busywork. And with air coolers being as well-designed and having as much thermal capacity as they do these days, the differences are mostly down to being marginal. Really it's a no-brainer.

I notice a huge difference with noise. And less ambient heat. No way I'm going back to air cooling.
@wasd____
@wasd____ 22 дня назад
@@spongesurf The placebo effect (a very real thing) notwithstanding, it's literally not possible you'd objectively have less ambient heat either way. The CPU/GPU don't know or care what you're cooling them with, they produce the same heat load either way so it's the same amount of heat that ultimately has to be rejected out of your system to the ambient environment. Less noise? Maybe, but noise is always an "it depends" thing and at the end of the day you're the one in control of your fan speeds so noise is really on you and your preferences in balancing noise vs. temperature.
@spongesurf
@spongesurf 21 день назад
@@wasd____ A LOT less noise. That was my biggest grief. But ambient temps as well. Water reacts differently to temp fluctuations. Look it up. Been aircooled all my pc gaming life. Once I switched to full water loop it is no comparison. Same case similar builds in same game room with same AC temps.

@@spongesurf It's a lot less noise... until the moment the pump develops a rattle. Someting that i learned NZXT Kraken AIOs are VERY prone to do. Generally the pumps are the achilles heel of any loop. If you take a dual to air cooler with dual 140mm fans in push pull, like the Noctua NH-15D or similar ones from other manufacturers, you won't hear all that much and if one fan fails, the cooling will still be ok-ish until your replacement fan arrives.

I always love your "issue fixing" videos, because whereas you give great advice in all your videos (well, almost all), these are the ones where I learn the most. I've not built a watercooled system yet, but next one may be first I try - so before I start buying parts, I'm very happy for all input I can find on what to avoid, what to look out for and - should anything come up - how to fix it easily and quickly. The first thing I learn from this is: Make all parts easy to access and, ideally, easy to get out and/or replace. The second: Don't use ASUS (which I've already decided after I finished - more or less - my current system. Had random system lockups for almost a year until finally some firmware update fixed that, and it was 100% ASUS Armory Crate that caused the problems (when I kicked that, the freezes stopped, when I re-installed it, they were back). Another thing I'm learning is that frosted liquid looks cool, but also can cause problems, so for my first wc build I'll propably stick to clear.

With just water you will have growth in no time. Another issue would be galvanic corrosion. No matter how pure that water is - there will be spores in the air that is in the system prior to fill. And if you have a mix of metals - aluminium, copper and steel - it will eat through through the aluminium in no time (the least noble of the metals mentioned) Back in the day (approx 2004) when I built my first and only custom waterloop you could not buy most of the stuff you can buy for this purpose today. We used engine coolant mixed with de-mineralized water. This contains mostly propylene glycol - which prevents growth and galvanic corrosion. BUT - water is the best carrier of heat (unless you can source some heavy water) - so you want to find the ideal mix between water and the coolant.

Jay, I've had this happen to me a few times as well. What I believe the issue is, is that EKs CPU water blocks have their fins very close together, so close in fact that particulate get stuck between the fins. I have an Barrowch CPU block (free hand-me-down) and it has been serving me fine. The fins on that block are farther apart than EKs, and I've realized real quick that I had no more 'fallout' over time. This is also why only your CPU loop is affected, the GPU fins are also much farther apart and allow all the particulates to flow freely between them.

I even had a case, where a friend of mine had to contact corsair serveral times for a replacement, because of pump failure. The AIO was mounted regulary, on top of the case. That means, that not feeding the pump properly, couldn't be the problem. The performance also wasn't that much better than a good aircooling. I'd probabaly build a custom AIO, if I ever want to get back into watercooling.

As someone who has built liquid-cooled systems for myself and others for many years, I wholeheartedly disagree with the "not worth it" sentiment. I don't do hard tubing - only flex tubing. Just that in itself makes a huge difference - flex tubing is nowhere near as difficult as hard tubing, both in the initial build and in maintenance. With a well-designed loop, the entire system is cooler - not just the CPU and GPU. Plus it runs quieter. And you can run less expensive components but get the performance level of more expensive components. The clock speeds will be higher due to lower temps, thus giving you higher performance.

I had that loop running for 4 years with no growth or issues, only the occasional top off with distilled water. Fast forward to 2022 same setup changed out the fluid with the same concentrate and nothing but growth and problems had to disassemble my distro, blocks and everything and tried again. 3 months later same thing. I was basically done with watercooling after that.

It cost a lot of issues because it got stuck in the sins of the heat plate in both the GPU and CPU and it took a very long time to clean out and then of course the radiators and everything. I was lucky and for my trouble EK sent me two times the fluid that I purchased and in a different color that wasn't pastel as well as two clear premixes and a full roll of replacement tubing. So I learned the hard way not to use Mystic fog because so many people have problems with it I have three friends that have used it and they all had the same issue however I do know online there are some people that have won several months with it working just fine

Too many points of failure and just ridiculous fiscal and maintenance overhead in comparison to simply...dusting heatsinks, coolers and fans periodically. The only maintenance I did with these loops is keeping the reservoir topped up.
