Everything comes to an end.
The tough thing about being an entrepreneur and growing a business is this concept:
"You have to give up, to go up."
Sometimes, we try a bunch of things at the beginning to see what we like and what works. I call it the shotgun approach. My truth is, hanging into the auxillary experiments delays the inevitable. Sometimes, we talk ourselves into hanging on to an experiment because it takes time. Without focus, on a simple process, you cannot become proficient and world-class. Focus on a skill, a process, on a technique, on coaching - how can you become an expert at one thing. And do it well.
Simple is hard. Keeping things simple is really difficult. Good businesses are boring. It's true. Entrepreneurs live dopamine. If things are going smoothly, believe me, I can make things complex really fast! They say "Founders Flounder". We are so passionate about so many things that it is contagious. We love what we do. But it does not make a consistent and profitable business.

With the value added to syrup by making it granulated, it's totally viable to just buy bulk from a large producer. That being said, if you enjoyed making syrup as a great thing in itself, you will very likely find yourself boiling again in the future. Maple is like that. It gets into your blood, as you surely know. Now, I think you are aiming for large scale, perhaps enough so the folks in Alstead, NH might sit up and take notice. Still, I was thinking that for the cost of one of those screens, you could buy a CDL double granulated sugar machine, which processes about 5 gal of syrup at a time. It creates 35 -40 pounds of screened and finished granulated sugar per batch. I'm not sure what the TAT is on a batch, but you could you line up 10 of them, with enough pots and burners, and maybe approach that 1500 lbs/day that your man said you could do with three pots. You probably considered this and opted to do what you are doing now at your pilot plant. Which is very cool and very promising. I did not know you can run a three phase motor on a single phase with a VFD! Good luck with your venture, and I am now subscribed so I'll be able to see how it goes.

It has been really busy lately, and I am a couple weeks behind on editing. Travel has been brutal for me. And I have been doing a lot of Dad things lately. RU-vid hasn't really been showing us much love, so I haven't really pushed it. This last video did really well. When people watch and comment, I am encouraged to keep filming and editing. But when people aren't watching, it really doesn't make sense to put in all the work. I'm going to try to post twice a week coming up. Try to get caught up. Thank you for watching and posting. It is encouraging and does make a difference. How did you find our video?

I agree that some of the top dogs tend to keep trade secrets. But the rest of the maples in the Forrest have no problem sharing ideas, thoughts, wisdom and the finer points of our craft. In our sugar making setup, it takes us three 14 hour days to convert 55 gallons of syrup into sugar. Much like Dale Forrester’s but I do not have the big burners. Just an ordinary gas kitchen stove. Can’t wait to see how your process works. Been wanting to do something similar for years, but do not have the space. Would recommend sifting the sugar while it is warm, breaks down the larger chunks easier and you get fewer of them in the end. I eagerly anticipate the next installment of this series.

Hi Nate, another very interesting video! Your LS tractor videos were good, I would suggest a year follow up review on the LS, your close to a good dealer which seems key if you buy a LS. Like you guys I have a couple of Kubota Tractors and as you know they are brutally reliable, my 23 year old 24 hp model has never seen the dealer!! I needed more capacity and have a MX5400 ordered that should be delivered this week. For your info were close to you in Medina, Oh and metro Cleveland/Akron we have 10 or so Kubota dealers. I got quotes from 3 of them and the difference was over $7,000! That aside, the price difference you found was very interesting on the LS.

There is not a lot of maple syrup content out there. The audience is pretty small as far as producers. My hope is that the consumers tune in and learn something about the industry. There's a lot of Norman Rockwell-esque imagery. However, the industry is quite advanced beyond Little House on the Prairie. Someone once told me, "Nate. People want to know where their food comes from. But no one wants to see a chicken get slaughtered." I have thought about that a lot when it comes to transparency of the industry. I am hoping more people want the truth and facts over facade and fiction. There are a lot of fake brands out there...

i wish you luck nate always nice to have a adventure. i would assume your still going to make maple syrup to sell becuse it makes sences. the extra syrup can be used to make sugar witch would save on buying it but you`ll prouble have to buy some anyway. but best of luck in the future.

Would love to see your operation. I came on to say we're heading to my parents in Canton next weekend. We pass close by on the way through from NY. My fiancé and I are small producers here in WNY and love to see others' operations. Different to see someone going to actual sugar operations.
