England crashed out of Euro 2016 after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland. Gary Neville reflected on the tournament shortly afterwards on MNF as he had worked as Roy Hodgson's assistant manager.

Everyone. Literally every single English football supporter looked at the screen in aguish when we saw an England corner. Every single corner that was taken was a waste and we all knew that if Harry Kane was in the box we'd have converted so many more. Anyone can ping a ball onto the penalty spot for a big CB to get his big slab head on it. Literally even I can do that 10/10 times. Such a bloody waste. You can't tell me that there was a unanimous agreement in the England camp on the decision for Harry Kane to take corners. I'm not understating it when I say that he was without a shadow of a doubt the WORST player to take a corner. I'd have preferred Joe Hart to take them.

@robderp
@robderp 4 года назад
Adrian 1977 Kearney it is dumb to take away a box threat but you definitely can’t just have “anyone else take it”, you still need a good corner taker. In Rooneys case, he wasn’t the best at headers and he was pretty good at whipping in a corner.
@kevinthorp6982
@kevinthorp6982 4 года назад
@Adrian 1977 Kearney you're totally right, take into account Van persie and Rooney were more all around players, so they have the ability to take a corner properly and set up the play, though Kare is a pure 9 which make that decision nonsense. England coaches are horrible. The one's in charge of the national team tho
@JChimos
@JChimos 4 года назад
No. Y'all are stupid if you genuinely think it matters which professional footballer takes a corner. Any of them can swing it in. All that matters is that they're not preferred elsewhere. I can hit the penalty spot every single time, and I can swing it in or out. You telling me i'm better than some professional footballers at taking corners? I'm pretty sure you'd all rather Kyle Walker swing it in than me. Pretty sure Harry Kane failed to beat the first man a couple of times as well. Maybe Beckham set the bar too high.

Iceland was a proper team, those players played together from they were children, most played for lesser teams around Europe. As a team they qualified for a major tournament for the first time in Iceland’s history. For the whole, tiny nation of Iceland, that competition was everything. The players understood that however their careers had gone before that, it was a unique opportunity to prove they were real players 🇮🇸 For the pampered stars in England, it was a Monday. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I don't know why people keep saying Iceland was as much underdog as countries like, for example, Northern Ireland or Austria. Especially for England fans, they felt so much humiliated. Yes England were bigger, better team, but remember Iceland were dominant in qualifiers, and for sure they would pass group stage in Euro cup. Iceland would give a very strong performance either way.. And you are saying like they didn't have star players, they did though, Sigþórsson, Sigurðsson, Guðmundsson to name a few

Yep exactly. Sometimes it's written in the stars for teams. Happens all the time for the minnows of the FA cup/Carabaro Cup. Iceland done pretty well at that tournament. Iceland were strong, they dominated in Euro qualifiers, beating Turkey and Netherlands, and they would be 1st if they didn't mess up against Latvia. Also they had like 3 star players... And guess nobody mentioned that Croatia went to WC final despite ranked 2nd in qualifiers, below Iceland. Well, despite anything, Iceland will always be considered underdog by media, and that's kinda a good strategy maybe

They beat Holland twice in the Euro 16 qualifiers, held Portugal to a draw in the group stage and when qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, won their group ahead of Croatia who went all the way to the final in Russia. A midfield three of Dier, Dele and an over-the-hill Rooney was curtains. All three can't control a midfield. We have always had midfield players who can control matches, who are not fashionable, either sat on the bench or not even picked. Instead they go for guys who catch headlines or score a few goals. We have never valued controlling midfield players as high as they do on the continent. Players like Carrick, Scholes were barely ever consistently used properly. In Italy or Spain they would have had 80-100 caps minimum just controlling the matches. In 2016 they had plenty of central midfield players(less fashionable) who could have controlled the matches.

Fundamentally it's about picking the right players and the right manager which England have often failed to do. Bobby Robson came closest of all to success and he was a great manager and picked good players. Brilliant players like Le Tissier never though got a decent chance while players like John Barnes as good as he was for Liverpool got picked time and time again for England yet never really delivered. The FA were always too stubborn not to either offer the job to Clough in the early 80s or go all out to get Ferguson.Other successful English club managers such as Kendall and Wilkinson never got a shout either.

If you cant do that then you must have experience of building a poor club that grew to become top 5 club in country. Harry Redknap should have been made england manager. Given how good he did for tottenham

I think we (as in English people) over expect on the international stage. We've had great players but we've never been able to put it together as a team. We've got to stop belittling smaller countries as well. All it does is feed into overconfidence then we end up getting smashed because we play like its a friendly. I also think England has the same impact on smaller countries like Man United does on smaller clubs. It's the team to beat because of the aforementioned overconfidence and it's also the country of one of the world's best leagues. Everyone wants to impress while playing against us. We as a country (and especially the media and pundits) need to chill the F out and respect every team we play and accept defeat when a better TEAM wins.

Everyone always tries to make excuses for England’s failings. Honestly, the only reason we haven’t won anything is simply down to the fact we aren’t good enough. Can pin it on tactics or managers all we want, but if the players aren’t good enough you’ll go nowhere. The ‘golden generation’ had lots of good players, but no great ones, and, ultimately, they make the difference when up against the top sides. The media in this country is a joke; constantly bigging up players and heightening people’s expectations to the point whereby they’re simply unrealistic. At the end of the day, a team of half decent individuals stands no chance of winning a tournament featuring teams comprised of clear world class talent.

@chicofoxo
@chicofoxo 4 года назад
Tell that to the Greek team that won the Euro 2004. Teams and tactics win, individuals fall. England managers never set a team out with a winning tactic and then picked players to suit that tactic. It was always picking players, then trying to shoe-horn a tactic to fit those individuals. And in part it wasn't the managers' fault, if they didn't pick this star or that star, then the press would villify them when the team had a poor performance. Even at club level, there aren't that many games for everyone to be patient for the manager to bed in a tactic, so it's unrealistic for this to happen at country, where there was even fewer games. So, managers had to hit the first game winning, so they ended up having to pick the best players to win, and win well immediately (probably why we tended to qualify quite well but did bugger all at tournaments). When in fact, the more successful countries gave some time and go with trying to get their team to play with a cohesive tactic.

I don´t think England has failed they performed on their level most of the time including this game just met the wrong team. As for Iceland no shame in that they had a good generation and Lars Lagerbäck has never lost to England. They should be warned about the solid defence and so many players knowing exactly what they are facing. England didn´t really play that bad but perhaps they like the commentators poor ranting here shows and general english press fell for the idea of their own greatness and not thinking they would have to go all in to beat Iceland

@@Symmetryful Short sighted comment. If anyone thinks doing "a very good job at West Brom" is prime reason to get the England job then THAT is the exact problem we have. Listen again, he lost at Anfield to Northampton and Blackpool then had a go at the fans. I didn't say he got the England job on the back of his Liverpool performances, but at a higher level he was clearly out of his depth. The man had Gerrard and Torres at his disposal but lasted only six months, andafter leading Liverpool to their most embarrassing defeat, he later done the same to England.
@Symmetryful
@Symmetryful 4 года назад
@@thehalfeatendoughnut1798 It's not though. I think you could argue on the basis that his playing style wasn't what England wanted but you can't argue he didn't deserve it on the basis that he managed West Brom. Most top managers start out at smaller clubs, even Klopp himself who took a second division German side to the higher reaches of football. The issue is, as I've stated, irrelevant to pitch matters anyway - someone like Redknapp wouldn't be intelligent enough to oversee the development of St George's Park, it should be bluntly stated.

Money has been flooding into the game for nearly 30 years yet we were still appointing backward looking coaches. Yes, facilities are a giant step forward, and even a great crop of youngsters, but if you don't get the coaching set up right it's all meaningless. Look what Erikson did to the 'golden generation.' I think he's right. I'm 41 and in my life time the only occasions I can remember England stopping key players from performing is Italy 90 (lucky against Cameroon in the quarters never stopped r.miller with others in that team but) great performance against w.germany no one could have asked anymore; Euro 96 outstanding against the Dutch and kept Germans quite like Berfhoff; sammer etc in semis; France 98 what a performance against Argentina, no one could have asked of any more and then limped into the semis in Russia during a very diluted tournament (i.e no Holland, Italy etc). We're not the only nation (or football team) to have wasted a golden generation of talent. Overconfident? With the arrogance of some supporters, the media and possibly the attitude of the players (harsh here imo), yes. Overrated overall?
