I played this song with my high school jazz band back in the 70's. Similar or same arrangement, but we played at a slower, and IMO, more soulful, tempo. Basie band is totally amazing, obv. Thanks for this.
Thanks, baby. I just got done listening to the Kay Starr And Count Basie version. I wish the Count had put her vocals over the top of this version instead, because this is even better in my opinion. Not that the slower version is bad mind you, because I just posted it in my G+ Community; "CHANTERS USA".
Does anyone know the effect the trombone soloist uses at around 1:50? It sounds like a shake but in lower register, which I didn't know was possible. I always hear trumpets and trombones from this era playing with that sound but have no clue as to what it is or how to learn it.
