Almost as if what he said was true. He could have easily walked past off camera and noticed it and then walked past again at a later time. Yes he should have handed it into the police but who knows if that wasn't his plan before his mum got that call. Innocent until proven guilty and there is definitely reasonable doubt in my mind.

I'm a serving officer working in a London based force and stuff handed in to the station just sits there, no enquiries or attempts are made (as we can't facilitate returning items to people). If no one comes in to collect the item within a few weeks, it gets moved to "long term storage", from there after 1 year it is deemed as "lost" and "not wanted" and therefore it is sold at public auction with the proceeds going to charity. Most police forces work the same way, they can't legally keep the profit for themselves so they give it to good causes.
