I suggest naming the new queen Destiny, as she sought out AntsCanada all on her own. And for slender ants, I recommend a cut and hollowed branch with limbs, set with its hollowed side facing the glass so you can film the nest.

Similar to this species, in my country we have "pseudomyrmex simplex", local to a bunch of countries from central and south america, aswell as in the caribbean, like in my case, DR. i have spotted it also near dead twigs and branches. according to my research, it has been found in queenless nests, (indicating high polydomy) and also in nests with more than one functional dealate queen, but apparently is still casified as monogynous, i still struggle to wrap my head around that. They are also monomorphic. There are other species sharing this bodyshape, but i have never seen other species, only this one

I have many name suggestions: 1. Nemy (African Origin) meaning “sweet” 2. Anwen (Welsh Origin) meaning “Sweet and most beautiful” 3. Vevina (Scottish Origin) “Sweet lady” 4. Amla (Arabic Origin) meaning “Sweet by nature” 5. Soma (Sanskrit Origin) meaning “Lunar nectar” I picked these 5 because they all correlate around their species craving for sweets, and I thought it was only fitting to name her Royal Highness after her sweet tooth.

So long time watcher but I think this is the first time I've ever commented. I really don't have a good idea for the name but honestly I think the habitat needs to be as natural as possible. Being that this species is already noted to be very hard to rear an entire colony in captivity I think the best choice is to find some slightly hollow branches stretched over the rest of the terrarium to make it seem more natural with melebugs placed in there so it can mimick their natural state as much as possible. I understand the desire to be able to see them but we have a responsibility to keep them in a way that provides the best possibility to thrive so we can see them in as natural way as possible and they can feel at their best. Lol just my thoughts.

I did not expect this video to solve a mystery for me. A few years back I was helping clear out dead branches off of a farm when I felt a sharp stinging sensation on my forearm. What I saw on my arm looked just like this slender ant queen you caught. I brushed it off of me and looked closer at it and recognized it must be an ant, but I had never seen an ant that looked like that before. Black, quite big, but skinny and had a weird shaped butt with a stinger. I live in North America, in the Pacific Northwest, and I've seen plenty of ants, but nothing like the one that stung me. Initially I thought it was a fire ant that had got me, but when I saw it, I realized that was not the case. When I looked it up online, the internet showed all the usual native ant species, but none that matched. I just assumed maybe I misidentified a weird insect that mimics the form of an ant, but when I saw the queen that landed on you, my jaw dropped. I was stunned to see it again, but also confused on how it ended up here in America. My heart sunk in my chest when you showed the seized ants, it finally clicked in my head what happened. In my area, ant keeping and bee keeping have become quite popular, and I suspect that perhaps the ant that stung me was a victim of being imported, then discarded by a careless owner. This is all speculation though, but given what you said in this video, all the signs point to that ant being imported and dumped somewhere locally. By the way, for those curious, the sting felt a bit less aggressive than a fire ant, but still burned and throbbed for a bit.

She seems awfully active for a queen She’s super cool and kinda funny, a lot more personality than most ants seem to have. Also her name could be Joan, like Joan of ark but instead she’d be Joan of bark. And in terms of their habitat you could make a large network of tubes with the red tape over them, you would be able to see the entire nest and it would be like being inside of branches.

Props on the conservation pitch. For a habitat, how about an ant tower with branches stacked in a vertical position around the perimeter like a palisade. Run a grove down each branch piece on the side facing the glass and drill some random holes along the sides to encourage exploration and boring to other branches.
@PikachuYoutuber.
@PikachuYoutuber. 2 года назад
The name Willow would definitely fit for this queen. Since the name "Willow" is an unique female name of English origin and means “slender” or “graceful”. The name is also derived from the willow tree which has a slender shape and graceful branches. Plus: I believe a terrarium would be best suited and make an entertaining video, maybe towards the future you can move that colon into the ant house

The more series I watch. The more interested I am. I had a thought last night after watching a few of your episodes. What if earth is just a terrarium for some advanced extraterrestrial civilization and they watch us in the same way we watch this 😂

Hello AntsCanada! I found a queen exactly like this a few weeks ago. It was wandering around my balcony and I thought it must have been a queen. I caught it and followed the normal procedure, but unfortunately she died before she could give birth to any eggs. I think this was because I didn’t feed her, instead thought she was a claustral species.I would love if you would be able to help me get more information on her. Thank you! PS- I live in Mumbai, India

For names I can recommend Lissome and Svelte, fancy, but matches up with the species as both words mean thin, slender, and graceful. For the container maybe you could just attack cut twigs towards the glass wall to view them, though some twigs will probably not be viewable for long with this idea.

I would name her ‘Dark Thin empress’ because it follows up with her body, head, and gaster. And the Dark follows up with the color

I like the name Twiggy. It had ties to the model, so it makes sense since it is so slim and it is also a play on where the nests are normally found.

Maybe name the Queen, Dryad since Dryad is the Greek Goddess of wood and she looks like a beautiful young woman which could relate to the slender bodies of the slender ants.

Her name should be svelte, meaning slim,slender and elegant like her! And it should be in a double stacked ac outworlds then branches and twigs in them and then rocky/mossy terrain on the ground

I suggest it might be a bullet ant because those ants can sting and are slender. Amazing videos by the way you are the one who inspired me to get a ant colony.

At 7:17 you said “divergently evolve” but it’s actually convergent evolution. They were two separate species that evolved the same trait independently, which is converging on the same point from different locations
@Zora_TheSideCharacter

Maybe eventually make a terrarium of twigs for them, but I think a cool way to start would be similar to the old Fire Nation set up, where there were tons of tubes going all over to a few different outworlds. Or at least that's how I remember it, it has been quite a while.

I suggest for the Queen, "Selinderella" Since she still has to do her work (hunting/foraging) while she is founding her colony. And for the colony "Selendrix" since they thrive in a matrix of slender branches in trees. Also, the flat brooding chamber AC sells should be an excellent starter place until you can get an aquarium setting built for them.

I want to name her Ditzi, bc she seems so curious that she's a lil clumsy. But very cute! I also wanted to ask some things regarding the illegal importing of foreign ants. While I agree 100% with everything you’ve said about WHY bringing in foreign ant species unregulated could be disastrous, I would like to know your opinion on these: is there a way (in your opinion) that foreign ants could be safely kept within a different territory? How do you feel about other species, inverts especially, that are imported? I.e. Isopods, mantids, tarantulas, roaches? Do you feel that keeping these species is different, and safer? I know it would be a lot easier for an ant colony to potentially become invasive than say a species of tarantula, but I would like your thoughts, especially now when the LACEY act may be permanently affecting how us Americans keep exotics!

For most creatures I would say I'd love to be able to own in any country or region responsibly. However, with ants, the main reason they are hard to keep in other countries other than their own is that they are escape artists. You could have as many precautions as you can in place to make sure they don't, but even antscanada has had full colonies escape from their enclosures. If there was a way to *guarantee* that they can't escape, then I'd be fine seeing them outside of their own countries. Ants are just so small, have massive colonies, and can easily overpower native species that it's just a huge risk if a colony escapes. Same with any small species of bug really that isn't kept alone. In the US, if I remember right, the honeybee that everyone knows about is actually invasive and out competes native bee populations, but most bee keepers use the invasive species to produce honey or help their own farms/gardens. You just have to be careful when you have insects that could do damage to your area if not housed properly.

I had an idea for the nest if you get a colony started, could you make them an area make out of small diameter cpvc pipe, with parts cut in half and up against the glass so you can still see in. Cpvc is used for drinking water so it should be ant safe and easy to work with
