Grab your fav coffee/tea and let's chat about mentors. I'm sharing 3 points here: why i changed my design mentor at Design Lab, how the switch process was like, and how my first session with my new mentor went! (Fun tip: I'll also share some pretty good advice that my new mentor told me!)
Tbh I don't think I've met anyone in DL who's like superrrr happy with their mentor. There's always something that they wish for. But I think it's important to weigh in the pros and cons. And not to forget to see it in a logical way too. Do you feel like you're being guided properly? Clarify what sort of mentorship you want. Does your current relationship reflect your needs? Is it something you and your mentor can talk out and solve together? If not, then idk maybe you might want to consider switching too. I'd suggest talking to Design Lab about it though cause that's what I did beforehand.

I just want to thank you for recommending us what your mentor recommended to you! It gives me a head start for reading the books and stuff so that I will be ready when my design lab classes start. Thanks so much again! Please keep doing it, you are helping us so much! I am happy that you are feeling well again! The porridge must have been really helpful lol 😉

I decided mainly cause of the price tbh. I'd recommend networking with your DL cohort a lot by creating your own cohort slack channel (so you guys can catchup and rant all you want!) I made one for mine and we've been meeting every week for the last 8 months o_o They're like my classmates in a sense. Helps with feeling less lonely doing a remote bootcamp. :)

More power to you! :) I also just applied to change my DesignLab mentor (similar story, male mentor with lots of students - guessing not the same one though), though still awaiting a formal switch. I'm glad you've found one you like, and thank you for sharing her tips! I'll have to hunt down that book.

@@EstieChoi SoCal?? Try Canadian winters! Haha yes I’ve been suffering from mascne too 🥺 I’ve recently started using The Ordinary’s glycolic toner and a thicker moisturizer has helped tremendously! Also I sleep with a humidifier by my bedside during the winter to prevent bleeding nose coz it’s soooooo dry here lol Thank you for the sweet welcome! Im so excited!! Stay safe Estie! 💕

Found this video because I'm also debating switching mentors. I feel like I'm not getting 100% during our sessions. It's not your old mentor because mine is new to DL (I was his first student) lol. I end the sessions feeling like I didn't learn much and have been relying more on group crits recently to cover especially after starting phase 2. I have an in-person friend in UAX and listen in our her sessions sometimes - night and day difference I feel bad bringing it up but don't want to be rude and just go to DL on the side and get the switch. But at the same time, it's my money and investment and I want my money's worth 😟

Hey Estie! Just left a comment on another video you uploaded yesterday. :) I don't know why I have skipped this video, as always your tips are very helpful!!! I have currently asked for a mentor switch after 2 sessions of my UXA as well, pretty happy with the new mentor now but I made a mistake- I didn't ask my current mentor before I requested a switch ... (for some reason I purely didn't think of that LOL) It was super awkward when my mentor asked me why we got unmatched suddenly... Anyways, it's all sorted now! If there's another chance I'll defo do what you recommended!!!!! Have a good one :)

I'm having the problem of really not feeling like I'm getting my money's worth with my mentor in UXA.. Our calls only last around 25 minutes and I feel like I'm just trying to pull out information from him. I asked him for advice on one of my project's and he just said "refer to the project brief." I'm really not feeling mentored by him so I'm thinking of asking for a new mentor as well.

Hi Estie, thanks for sharing your DL journey with us! I'm currently considering taking the course but I feel like it's a big step and I have a few doubts concerning the workload and if UX is really right for me! I've been reading books, articles, and watching videos etc. and so far i'm really interested in it, but with no background in design or research (apart from at uni) I feel a bit worried. I've been teaching since I graduated with a business degree 5 years ago and i'm really keen to make a career change! Are there any resources you suggest to give me a better insight into UX? Thanks

Heyy estiee! Ive been watching your vids for a like a month and your vids helped me decide enrolling into foundations. Do you get the top 3 mentor choice only for uxa?? Plus, I’ve seen that you pull all nighters so how many hours do you think you spend on uxa more than foundations?? Is it pretty much the same? ( approx 10 hours a week) Thanks!

Hiii aw tysm! ❤️ foundations was supppperrrrrr chill for me. I wasn’t stressed at all so yeah 10 hrs/wk is doable! UXA was stressful cause my first mentor was hardcore. part timers are 20 hrs/week and full time is 40hrs by default. But my mentor challenged me to go over due to reiterations and preparing/practicing my presentations. Your experience is completely dependent on your mentor tbh & yes you only get the option to choose when you apply for UXA! 😅

Working on my design BA thesis and so far my mentors have been a torture. Leaving me even more confused and sad after every feedback. They kept on insisting their ideas on me, but at the end I have to remind myself that I will be the one who will defend this thesis. They won't be there. I feel like one mentor would have been fine but 8 is too much 🥲
