Hate Crimes towards LGBTQ+ people are on the rise and Manchester Pride knows this is a key concern for queer communities. In a bid to tackle the ongoing issues of hate crimes and hate incidents against Greater Manchester's LGBTQ+ communities, Manchester Pride have produced this short film as part of the 'I Choose Kindness' campaign.
At Manchester Pride Festival 2023, we celebrated a key milestone in queer liberation - the 10 year anniversary of marriage equality. But we also asked the question, how far have we really come?
In the last three years, in Greater Manchester, hate crimes due to sexual orientation have increased by 69%, while hate crimes against transgender people surged by 115%. This stark reality underscores the need for urgent action to ensure inclusivity, equality, and unwavering respect for all individuals, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The video forms part of Manchester Pride’s wider ‘I Choose Kindness’ campaign, dedicated to promoting an inclusive and safe environment for the LGBTQ+ community. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hate crime, providing resources for its victims and allies, and promoting a culture of kindness and respect throughout the celebration of LGBTQ+ expression and culture.
