Lentulus: "Your recovery is a miracle."
Caligula: "But you prayed for it, Lentulus."
Lentulus: "Oh, night and day. But our prayers are not always heard."
Caligula to Lentulus: “You offered your life to the gods in the place of mine. That was extremely noble.”
Lentulus: "It's true. I did."
Caligula: "And what are you going to do about it?"
Lentulus: "Do about it? What do you mean?"
Caligula: "Well, I'm still here and so are you, but we oughtn't both to be here. Should we not give the gods the things that we promise them? You're in danger of the crime of perjury, Lentulus. Think about it. But not too long. The gods won't wait forever, of that I can assure you. I know them only too well."
Lentulus waited a long time, until he realized that "the god" Caligula wasn't going to forget, and then finally committed suicide.

Good point. If Augustus Caesar was deified after his death, why not before? Are there differing degrees of absurdity?

I mean, an overzealous post-mortem honorary title is a bit less weird than the subject of said title calling *himself* a god.

Well, when a psychopath has thugs or an army to back him or her up, any absurdity becomes frightening.

It's all about precedent. And Augustus was unprecedented. It all began to go craycray for the Julio-Claudians after he died

It probably seems more absurd to us that Caligula "became a god" than it did to the ancient Romans, as we modern westerners are so entrenched in the monotheistic tradition of Christianity in whch "God" is the creator and rule of everything. But in Caligula's day, gods, demigods and men were commonly entangled. Gods would, for exmaple, have sex with mortals and create sons of gods, such as Achilles. The term "god" simply did not mean what we think of it as meaning today. It was more a matter of "divinity".

You’re wrong. Being god is basically same as christiniaty but more creative and interesting.

@@Edward1312 Really? Because, beginning with Julius Caesar, the deification of Roman emperors essentially dominated Roman history for three hundred years.
@WildMen4444

@@Captain-CosmoYou and Mr. Edward are both correct. It was customary at the time to honor the guiding spirit of the emperor while he was alive similarly to how one would also the guiding spirit of their father and by this time both Julius Caesar and Augustus were worshipped as Gods after death. This was customary within Rome. Outside of Rome in the Greek East, Roman governors and generals had long been honored with divine honors while alive similarly to Hellenistic monarchs. Men like Marc Antony and Pompey the Great both received such honors while alive. This was customary outside of Rome by the Greeks. If Caligula stuck to these traditions there would not have been a problem. The problem was that Caligula wanted the Greek treatment of being given divine honors while alive in Rome (or so they say). That was a stretch too far for the Romans
