I will never fail to be amazed at the persistece of Johnstone's chat typing balls in a rainbow font. They are so bessoted with that one word, such persistence has not been seen since the trojan war. Every waking hour of the Johnstone chatter's mind is plagued by thoughts of rainbow balls. Every day they ponder why they love the rainbow balls so much. And yet every time they come back. Every day they return with godly resolve, lurking inbetween every message with any sort of meaning to simply say.. Balls.

This year I’ve been taking on the daunting challenge of completing as many Pokédex’s in the Pokémon series as I can to see just how different the experience was back in the day, and to highlight how convenient the new games are in comparison.
Out of the history of the Pokémon games, generation IV is without a doubt the most nostalgic for me, as Pokémon pearl took up an overwhelming majority of my childhood.
Out of the history of the Pokémon games, generation 4 is without a doubt the most nostalgic for me as Pokémon pearl took up an overwhelming majority of my childhood and although I have completed the decks in these games, something about them always makes we what to come back.
The amount of charm and skill John brings to his videos from an editing and storytelling side is just phenomenal. He’s really grown as a creator and personality over the last few years. I rewatch his catalog often as background noise for other tasks and the evolution of his content and his integration of his livestream and his ability to bounce off his chat can’t be understated. Thank you Mr Stone !
I love the ds Sinnoh games; Because after you beat the game, it turns around, looks at you dead in the eyes and says "good luck catching everything else buddy".
47:30 - I specifically remember this event being held in-person in the UK, notably at the Pokemon stall at Riverside Festival in Nottingham. From memory I can recall that whilst my parents were away at work, I had plenty of time to sneak out of the house (was in sixth form college at the time) , catch a bus a go there to get the event. But I didn't risk it and chose to stay home instead. Although some time later I think I recall having a trade from a friend who went there, thus I was able to claim the other 3 regis. Pokemon Platinum was definitely a game of it's era. Edit 48:16 - Yes, the lvl1 was funny, I don't know why, but I didn't question it haha.
3:19 jumpscared me since my text ringtone is the meme of a bunch of Pikmin yelling Pikmin and I’ve been waiting on a response back to something all day lol.
Watching this lowkey deeply frustrates me. For a franchise whose catchphrase is “gotta catch em all” they really do not want you to catch em all. It’s not just a grind is a damn living torture trial
Back in the day they were lifestyle games; they wanted you to check in daily, play and trade with other people, slowly work towards that goal. Doing it alone was never the intent.
Oh no, older gens were very much you have to be there, if you wanted to catch them all. Good luck if you got bored, or happened to be born at the wrong time.
Modern Pokémon really makes a lot of stuff easier And easier trades and less trade evolutions definitely helps a lot here in completing a living Dex in SV
Your storytelling, editing, pacing and everything is top tier! After making my own long form video I can really appreciate this content even more. Plus us John's are just the coolest people 😎
16:01 I remember that the catch rates of Groudon and Kyogre were higher than 3 in Pokémon Emerald as well. Kyogre in particular was quite easier to catch than Rayquaza thanks to the Net Ball.
16:00 Fun fact: Groudon and Kyogre have catch rates of 5 from gens 3 to 6. They were later lowered to 3 in ORAS. Edit: Actually looking at the Hoenn trio's rates I only just realised that Rayquaza's catch rate was raised from 3 to 45 in ORAS and it stayed that way until scarlet and violet where it went back to 3.
48:00 That's what I was thinking. I know what you're *supposed* to do, is transfer the 3 Regis from the Hoenn games, but it's funny that in-game, you need Regigigas to get the three Regis, but you need the three Regis to get Regigigas
I love how you probably had so many streams where random people would join a "completing the Platinum Pokédex" stream just to find you playing a Pokémon game that's NOT Platinum 😄 (incredible accomplishment and thanks for all the Gen IV nostalgia too)
This takes me back... Doing the underground trick with a friend to catch Spiritomb, COMPLETELY LEGALLY playing through the Mythical events for Darkrai, Shaymin and Arceus, transfering a Manaphy Egg from my Rangers Shadows of Almia copy, receiving a special Wifi Mew, getting the cutie Spiky ear Pichu and experiencing Celebi warping through time to face Giovanni... Cherished memories
29:00 its funny thats how he went about getting that celebi since that gamestop one in particular wasnt supposed to be released and the official distribution has the OT WIN2011
Man, this challenge was insane to say the least! I'm attempting to complete the pokédex in all the physical copies I own of the games, aside of buying the side games which sometimes are required, and after three years I'm not even half through! What you did is monumental! Also, I realize that I missed out so much useful things that are now lost forever (like the many pokèmon events, the My Pokémon Ranch on Wii which is now unavailable, the Pokémon Radar and the Pokètransport on DS, especially now that the 3DS online is dead for good). I have really to thank you for these videos, I'm finding out so much!
I’ve been working on 100%ing (5 trainer star living dex) Platinum casually for a while so I was so excited to see this video! (I got the extra games I needed in Japanese to keep the cost low…ish)
I'm in the process of doing this same challenge myself :)! After watching your other dex videos I was inspired to try it in one of my fav games. I'm glad you made this video so that I can see what's in store for me once I beat the main story lol T^T. Thanks for all your hard work John. I'm always excited when I see a Johnstone vid in my feed!
Funny how even still in the Teal Mask DLC Feebass is STILL a hard pokemon to find naturally. I spent 2 hours trying to isolate encounter it, and once I finally did catch it, I found a Milotic raid den right outside the cave.
This is exactly the video I needed to play for my hour-long drive home. Genuinely you have no idea how excited I was to see this when I opened RU-vid lol (Don't freak out, I have RU-vid Premium, I listen to videos with the screen off while I drive)
This is crazy , as a kid , I had basically all these games plus the gen 3 games , so minus the event pokemon i had all of them. I even did the braille puzzles as a kid in gen 3 to get rerigigas in diamond. Wild to see to see where we have ended up when this should be easier today
I cannot express how much John has evolved in his content and how much he is challenging himself. Thank you again bro for another great video. Can't wait for the next upload
That Voltorb Flip fail had me screaming "NO YOU'RE NOT CHOOSING THAT SPOT" and then you chose a spot that you should've known was gonna not do anything good
I did this too, probably one of my proudest achievements in gaming. The celebi I was lucky and got at GameStop years ago, the tweaking glitches got innovated right when I needed to get Arceus, and I ordered a mystery gift cart for deoxys
As a fellow Gen 4 Pokedex completer, I can say that the best part about it is... Playing through Pokemon Ranger. That game is so neat (and so infuriating)!
I must have been the luckiest man alive to get munchlax on the THIRD tree of the entire game. I still have that save file and that Snorlax to this day.
Always a good day when a new Johnstone video drops. For content suggestions now that home is giving away rewards for completing game pokedex's I think you are the best creator when it comes to making videos for that. Need a quest for shiny meloetta video
Possibly the most incredible part of this is how fast he got the video out! It’s only been a couple weeks since he finished this challenge on Twitch and he somehow managed to write a script, edit dozens of hours of footage, and upload it!? Anyone who’s edited a video knows just how ridiculous that is!
Always love your videos, between the content, the editing style, and your positivity through it all :D Keep up the great work and thanks for another great one!
