I'm 70 years young and this music was the norm in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. Every friggin day on the radio....and we didn't even know how lucky we were!
I dispute that we didn't know what we were watching. I certainly did. The fact that she still effects me the same way today is a testament to her enormous gift. While I love most of the old classics, very few effect me the same as they did when I first heard them. Janis is the exception.
I call those performers Flat Footed Singers that can blow you away. No dancers, no auto tune, no light shows, no over production. Just a song, musicians and a massive soul filled voice. Awesome.
SO glad he saw this, I thought oh boy is he gonna be in for a surprise. His reaction was spot on. Wonderful to see younger people appreciate it so much.THAT was the kind of reaction we appreciate. We DO understand, and he gave the performance due awe and appreciation. Brilliant job! (and janis skips away in her kitten heels!) .
Have to see Adele - Rolling in th Deep. I think he will like it a lot, ( might not run out of the room, but I think he might do a spin!) Neds to get his popcorn!
You did NOT overreact! She is one of one. She’s raw, authentic, soulful, and all around greatness. I’m just glad to see someone appreciate her like you do. I do too. Her last album it was said she was learning really when to tone her vocal back and when to blast it, she was really learning more about her powerful voice. Once in a lifetime talent. Just imagine how many more great sings and performances she had in her? Gone way too soon.
She was destined to be too good is WHY she's gone. The controllers of ALL agendas had to intervene. They don't want us too distracted. She is one of the originals of the 27club.
The Woman saying "Wow!" at the end of the performance is Cass Elliot of the group the Mamas and the Papas ("California Dreaming", etc), who was one of the people who set up the Monterey Pop Music Festival. This was Janis Joplin's introduction to world fame; previously, she was just a singer for the band "Big Brother and the Holding Company" who were backing her in this performance. Just a poor girl from Lubbock, TX, bullied and overlooked in school, but Janis loved the Blues. She was 24 that day in June 1967. She died from her own self-destructive behavior just 3 years later, in October 1970. “On stage, I make love to 25,000 different people, then I go home alone.” -Janis Joplin
it’s my favorite part of the video every time, that wow at the end. She was literally in awe like omg. And Cass could sing wonderfully herself so. She knew a legend.
Actually, she was from Port Arthur, Texas, and went to college at UT Austin. I was a student there at the time. She used to perform at Threadgill's, a legendary beer joint in a converted gas station, on Wednesday, which was folk night. I saw her there a couple of times playing her autoharp and singing. She was something different, even then.
Janis knocked us out in the 60's. Another candle in the wind. She used her voice the way Stevie Ray played guitar. They're natural born Aliens. These performances are raw. When I listen to "Work Me Lord", never a dry eye. It's just gut wrenching. Please react to that one. It's so great to see people like you who didn't live through this era, appreciate this poor creature who tore open her soul for us. RIP, dear Janis. ☮️to all.
just so you know, this was Janis's DEBUT to the world! The woman in the audience wowing out to her is Mamma Cass from The Momma's and the Poppa's! The Monterey Festival also introduced Jimi Hendrix as well :D
You are not overreacting! There'snever been anyone like her before or since. I cried for days when she died. The rough part was Jimi Hendrix had just died about 2 weeks before. I was still mourning him when she died. The worst and best times of my life. She died never knowing the impact she made on the world. RIP Janis. I still love you so much.
Her self esteem was so low because she didn’t fit in with the mean and prejudiced set in high school down in Port Arthur, Texas. They treated her like an outcast and in college voted her “ ugliest man on campus”. She never got over it. She was better than all of them. And the world loved her!! Her biggest influences were Aretha, Bessie Smith, Nina Simone, Tina Turner , Otis Redding and more.
That's so heartbreaking, people can be so stupid and cruel. Janice Joplin was a beautiful soul and so freaking talented. Just watching this performance you can't help but fall a little in love with her.
Janis loved Big Mama Mae Thornton like Elvis did who sang Hound Dog and Janis is singing Mama Thornton’s Ball and Chain. They loved them and did justice to this woman who was an iconic blues singer.
This video is of a second performance at the festival. This unknown singer blew everybody away and they were asked to come back the next day again. Mama Cass's face says it all. You are not alone in your reaction to this song.
They were going to be filmed on Saturday ( when I was there) but the band refused to “ go commercial “ or some such complaint. Janis wasn’t in on the decision and freaked out. She knew Clive Davis was there and a second performance on Sunday was indeed granted.
She left way too early....... makes the heart cry many, many tears. The pain never seems to fade when you think about Janis Joplin. She lived a painful life and I often wonder if things would have gotten better for her if she had lived longer. She left us her heart thru her songs..... and that's forever! Janis Joplin, EVERYBODY LOVES YOU! RIP.
Im 20, and when I was a kid my Dad always played her music and I had no idea she wasn’t with us anymore and I was so sad when I figured out I couldn’t see her live. She’s amazing, wish she was still here!
Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you for such a thoughtful reaction, & I hope you continue to discover her music, you won't be disappointed ❤ 💚 💙 I highly recommend, Summertime & Cry Baby!!!
I was at this show! Yep, I’m an old fart! Janis’ band was called Big Brother and the Holding Company. Everything was blues based back then- that’s why we loved it so much!!!!! Check her out singing Raise your Hand with Tom Jones- the chemistry is off the charts!
As many times as I've seen this, I still get a kick out of Janis rockin' those little kitten heels! And honey, please react to her singing "Summertime" live. It'll touch your soul. 💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙
Just before the end of her life, she went on as a guest with Dick Cavett on his TV talk show and talked about being run out of town as a teenager in Texas, and that she planned to return for her 10 year anniversary. "I'm going home," she told Cavett. Unfortunately for Janis, she did go back and the residents snubbed her ONCE AGAIN. It must have been a bitter pill to swallow for Janis after feeling she had conquered those childhood haunts.
I love her appearances on the Dick Cavett show. He always treated her very respectfully, for instance he knew she was bookish and asked her about what she was reading , and also serious discussions about music.
Nothing like the toxic lifetime branding of ppl who grow up in towns. And her 1969 song about having to get out of Texas, she exposed them, so I guess they didn't like it.
@@TheDivayenta - I'm sure they gave a quick listen out of curiosity, but only long enough to ridicule what thy didn't listen to, take in, or even attempt to understand. Reminds me of Don McLean's song Vincent. I wonder if the is anything in her town honoring JJ. ?? Many have got to know by now that they screwed up. Hopefully the were at least some who understood and appreciated her. :(
I have watched you react to Janis at least 30 times now...i love your reaction so much....i watch you watch her every morning niw, you honestly start my day with a smile...❤
The “wow” from Mama Cass (Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas) says it all. Cass was well known for her soulful singing but Janis blew her away. NEVER underestimate a little white girl from Texas. Janis was and is THE legend. Unfortunately, the world is just too cold and cruel for some gentle souls and we lose them way too soon.
This was the performance that got her noticed and an immediate record deal. No one had heard anyone or anything like Janis before this. Before this performance, she and her band, at this time, were basically unknown. After this performance, the rest is history lol Her band here was Big Brother and the Holding Company. All hail Queen Pearl 👏
That is not over-reacting at all!!! The audience did not know what they were going to get with Janis, because before this music festival she was a relatively unknown singer. This was the performance that catapulted Janis into the big leagues. Big Mama Cass (Elliott) was the woman in the audience who was wowed by this performance. They were all still sitting down because they were probably higher than a kite at the time.
Brother you had the perfect reaction to the unique life force that is Janis. She sang with every fiber of her being and I never get tired of her magic.
You didn't overreact at all! This is why Janis is my all time favorite singer! First Queen of Rock but dubbed Queen of the Blues. Her voice is unbelievable, her passion is unparalleled. I adore her. You'll enjoy Summertime. I've seen a lot of reactions to this one and you win best reactions. 😍
One of the best reaction videos I've seen...THANK YOU!!! I've always loved Pearl and I'm almost 70. One of my high school coaches went to school with Janis, She was from Port Arthur, Texas next to Beaumont, where George Jones was from. Record exec Clive Davis was there at that festival and he too was blown away and signed her shortly after. She passed away way too young at 27. Same age as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.
Thank you for the beautiful words at the end . I am 65 and this was my time , the best of all times to be young . And everything was like Janis , EVERYTHING .
She died at the age of 27 They call it the 27 club It's a shame such talent had to leave us but I'm glad we were blessed to have her on film and recorded albums
So glad we requested this because Janis needs to be heard and her legacy continue onto the younger generations! She'll always be my favourite female singer ever, and if someone doesn't like her singing, well then you're not my kind of people. Full stop. Same goes for Led Zeppelin! Janis was pretty much unknown here, at the Monterey Pop Festival. After this her career took off, big time. So sad, we didn't get to know what her 30 s/40s and beyond years would've been like. Must do Summertime, live( black and white video). Summertime is an old song from a musical. It was made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. Many many have covered it. We sing it in choir even. Love your reactions. They're true and honest. No BS
That lady with the sunglasses you froze on for a minute, at the 9:36 mark, is Mama Cass. She sang with the band "The Mamas and Papas (California Dreaming is my favorite by them) and Mama Cass sang solo (Dream a Little Dream Of Me.) There is a whole treasure chest there!!!
Monterey Pop means the Monterey Pop Festival from 1967. "Ball and Chain" is a blues song written and recorded by American blues artist Big Mama Thornton. Although her recording did not appear on the record charts, the song has become one of Thornton's best-known, largely due to performances and recordings by Janis Joplin.
The awestruck lady in the crowd is Mama Cass Ellliot , from the Mamas and the Papas , it was Monterrey, a town south of San Francisco, Monterrey pop festival.
I am extremely lucky, I grew up with the music of the 60’s, and got to see Janis, Jimi, Clapton, BB, you name them, I saw them. I went to concerts every weekend for years, great memories. I am so happy to see this music being appreciated by you and a whole new generation. Great music will never fade away.
they didn't cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars back then. I saw plenty of the 60s/70s singers and groups even for free. Oh my...I hope the best of music happens again for everyone.
Her guitarists name was Sam Andrew. He was a member of the band named Big Brother and the Holding Company. They were already performing when the group's manager brought the diminutive singer named Janice Joplin to perform with them. They knew right then they had something special.
I'm so thrilled you've fallen for Janis! She (and Mavis Staples) are my two favorite female singers. You should hear Work Me Lord Stockholm 1969. She put everything into that performance.
Janis was the best. I was in my teens and I loved her. We were graced with her amazing talent and sad she was gone too soon. Some have tried, and one came close, but no female has ever sounded like her. She was definitely one of a kind
Your reaction is how my soul feels when I listen to her, for 40 years, every time. Right? Like you just have to stand up and shout...so glad you love it.
It is the Monterray Pop Festival. Most people in the audience had never heard of Janis. This was her introduction to the music world. She never looked back :) One of the organizers was Mama Cass Ellio of the Mamas and Papas. Sh is seen reacting to what she just witnessed with the words 'WOW'
This was before she made it big, her name wasn't even on the advertising. The lady with the sunglasses 🕶 was Mama Cass from the Mama's and the Pappas. She was one of the organizers of the festival.
The woman in the audience you were were amazed at is Mama Cass of the 60's folk group The Mamas and The Papas who also performed at the show, The Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. 2 years before Woodstock in August 1969. The Mamas and The Papas: John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Mama Cass and Denny Doherty.
It was great to see you so moved by this. As you said and as I've felt, it's high on the list of the greatest performances I have ever seen. Thanks for the reaction!
Welcome to Janis Joplin. She will tear your guts and your heart out, every singe time, over and over again. She was relentless, unstoppable, undeniable. Her talent was not of this world. It may seem like it was all improvised, but it wasn't. Her performance was carefully rehearsed, with every lick refined and developed over about a year at this point -- including the scat.. She knew what she was doing, and she worked very hard to get it. And wow, she sooo delivers.
She had an incredible voice and her performances came from her soul and you feel every note. Mamma Cass is in the audience and is watching in amazement.
NO You did not overreact!! Janis was my favorite female vocalist my whole life! I was a teen when I started listening to her and then soon after she died... it was devastating!!!! A sweet talented young woman was taken out of this world.. I guess God needed her to sing up in heaven for all the angels
Don’t apologize my friend -you just witnessed one of the greatest performances of my time. Literally mind-blowing. And this is the shortened video of her entire performance, which has been posted on RU-vid.
when I was 5, the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show and like the rest of the world at that time, we were taken by their catchy tunes, harmonies and world of love songs . That same year I found my older cousin's record player up in her bedroom with a 45rpm record already on it and I turned it on. It was the Yardbirds' New York City Blues and I WAS MESMERIZED! What I was hearing was the BLUES! It touched my soul . As Rock and Roll emerged in the 60's, I came to realize that everything I EVER loved about music was steeped in the blues. The entire British Invasion was all about it and Motown was as well. The 60's sound was the grandchild of the Blues.
