Ryan Villopoto shares some of the struggles he went through regarding bike setup on the factory Kawasaki.
RV is one of the modern icons of Motocross. We are very similar in age and I followed his career from a relatively unknown amateur all the way through his incredible pro career. I have always wanted to have RV on the show, but I am glad it took us this long as we have actually got to hang a bit over the last 6 months. He's a legend of a bloke and a really fun guy to hang around... I hope that comes across in this show! We talk about Ryan joining BluCru, why redheads have the most championships, if he retired to early, how his speed would stack up today, and even though it is kinda old news now, we talk about the Ando / Jett situation and what it means for the sport.

It was the 2012 bike! When the bike was available or homoglated, Villipoto was able to ride the 12' bike later in the 2011 season. I think it was like night and day difference for him.

Havent ridden a dirtbike in ages. I'm a mountain biker and by the way they talk i feel like it translates. For years I rode a bike that I couldn't get comfortable on and would get pitched over the bars and couldn't understand why. Jumped a modern bike and it all went away. That's when I learned about geometry and little things that make huge differences on the trail.

That makes perfect sense, I'm in the circle dirt track racing world and it all applies, there's only the 1 set of laws of physics and we use the same ones throughout all motorsports, so unsurprisingly, things translate from one to the other! Specifically what RV said at the end, throw 4 clicks and go feel it, that's the only way to really feel it, go hard one direction until you start to notice it, then dial it back. It's the same thing for Sprint Car racing.

I’m a atv rider for the ama pro class basically the same thing as the dirtbike motor cross but all quads and I notice differences all the time I like a worn out bike vs a new one. New ones to me are super stiff and uncomfortable. So I usually do better later in the season when the bikes broke down

a lot of the mtb suspension tech comes from MX

Ryan's advice at the end is perfect for lots of things in life, not just moto testing. Hell I play music on the weekends and it's the same concept for dialing in effects like Reverb, bring it in until you notice it, then back it off a tad. Almost the same exact thing as moving clickers on your shock lol.

the break in period on the new austrian bikes are insane. my two huskies were so stiff and so sketchy untill around ten hours. night and day difference

I remember that year .. 2011 with poto and weimer results were night and day difference after getting the 2012 model A lot of people have never heard of this but you can do half clicks on the front (not as many bikes now with single side damping). When fine tuning the clickers you can do one click on one fork leg and leave the other. Obviously you have to have a really good feel for suspension to notice the difference but it can be the setting someone needed. I learned that from a buddy who used to race pro and test ride for honda in the 90s and early 2000s

That’s an old trick my dads buddy Matt Howell, AMA Chris Howells dad, taught my dad a lot of suspension stuff where my dad was the engine guy

I used to ride with guys that absolutely refused to touch their suspension. Some were riding complete garbage setups but preferred to tough it out because they had no idea what they were doing and didn't want to learn. Probably why a lot of people jumped on four strokes; they had always heard that two strokes were prone to blowing up if you messed with the jetting so they were always so rich oil was running out of the tail pipe, but refused to touch it.

The last brand new bike I bought was my 2017 ktm 250 sx and absolutely loved it from day one but once I hit about 20hrs I started to hate the air forks, just could never get them dialed in after puttin some hours on them

Even in the profession drag racing sport, one of their most common phrases is "Nothing like fresh pipe" (a new tuge chassis) After a certain number of passes, a car just doesn't perform the same. Sometimes that's good, most times it's bad.

Please more of this seems how top riders, not Jet say they keep working on bike. Idk what they're working on as everyone riding a 250 or 450? What is the magical solution to get them to #1?

100% you can feel the difference in new vs used bikes, i had a yz250 with 70hrs on it and a brand new one and the the 70hr chassis felt soo shit and sloppy

At least he let Ryan talk here (for the most part). He usually asks the guests a question then interrupts them with some story of his own trying to relate. I keep trying, but just can’t get with The Gypsy.

@@vincerogers1417 That's wild from my perspective. Jase is easy to listen to plus he's dead on most of the time. As a fan of Title 24 and Pulp, among suffering through RC trying to spit a sentence out or listening to Steve on Pulp at ALL, listening to Jase is a treat! 😂

A bike will never get better when the communication from RV or any rider is that it feels like shit. This is not a positive language to an engineer, mechanic or team that is working their ass off for you. And they don't know what shit feels like.
