Hi all ,my flying tip: 1st buy a new plane.(Kodiak 100 or 900) 2 nd, read the manufacturers specifications: maintenance and weight & measures.

I experienced a base to final stall during my third solo flight as light sport. Landed in trees and came down nose first to my death, but I hit a tree dead center and split it down the middle all the way to the ground. Trees caught the wings and I stopped 1 foot from the ground. 7/5/18 in louisburg nc. Never stopped my desire to finish my sport. 6/2020 in Winston Salem NC piedmont flight training. If we wreck a car, we don't cut up our drivers license and walk the rest of our lives. Only cut my knee and I am looking forward to buying a new plane soon. If you spend your life running from what scares you, you will be running forever .

Writing it out will let you sleep that you’re not going over and over and over again. Your notes will hold your memory. It’s in a safe place to hold.

The problem I have with sharing an experience is, instead of people learning from your experience, they throw out these could have, should have responses judging the pilot. No, I did not have a crash, but I did catch myself making stupid mistakes that certainly had a learning/teaching moment.

I have a couple of friends that have crashed, Yes, Talk about asap! My last boss could crash better than anyone else that I know! It happens! And I will fly with him anytime!

I noticed that I got SEVERALLY depressed after I fought off an intruder that broke into my home. We fought, and I got the worst end of it. Whenever we get physically damaged, that happens. I hope your doing better… 🙏

IMHO a lifetime of flying is an exercise in learning what doesn't work and taking steps to prevent it from happening again. That's the only way pilots survive. I've gotten into the habit of even mentally debriefing each of my flights to identify my weak point and try to shore those up. Fortunately for me, my off-airport incident was purely mechanical. I have mad respect for pilots (well, anyone really) who owns their mistakes, especially those that end with bent metal. Even in my case I learned areas I could improve on despite the mechanical failure. Much like the brakes, I can check the failure points a lot better during preflight. Dan - your incident is no reflection on you or your skills as a pilot. Your experience and sharing it actually may save someone else's life someday and THAT is where the value is in this conversation. Oddly enough - I wrote my story out only because it was easier than continuing to tell it each time it came up. Hit me up if you want the link.

Great topic here, and I appreciate you bringing up the gyro mishap. I watched the Blancolirio episode and later met Juan in person and actually talked about your situation with him. I'm a fixed wing and gyro rated private pilot who would love to share stories with you one day. I trained in gyroplanes/gliders in the 70's and then dabbled a bit in the 90's, but never continued until the new generation gyros emerged with improved stability. Now I feel much safer in my modern gyro than in any of the fixed-wings I've flown. I've had minor in-flight failures in aircraft and have made many mistakes, but no accidents so far. I think about it often. I'm so glad you presented this! Next time you are in Idaho, come fly rotors with me!

Great episode! Great information that all of us can use. I think it is great to evaluate each flight and consider everything involved. This can enhance your experience and make it enjoyable as well as find things we can improve on. I strive to be the best and safest pilot I can be. I think I can improve myself by taking a deep look into my experiences and learning from them. Good stuff. I never crashed, but during PPL training I experienced a partial power loss that prompted the declaration of an emergency, I got pretty spooked by that. I ended up finishing my PPL, but I didn't fly for long, but I don't think I really fully recovered. The first "mistake" I made after PPL, I convinced myself I really wasn't a good/safe pilot. I somehow I mistook the wind direction and was landing downwind, and after 2 go-arounds, on the 3rd attempt I decided to just land it since I had a really long runway and starting to lose daylight. It's been about 12 years, I haven't flown since. Yes other life events have gotten in the way (kids, time, money), but deep down I know the main reason I called it quits. When you're confidence goes, it's really hard to get back. Here I am, "writing it out" I'd like to fly again someday, but I doubt I will try it until my kids are at least out of the house.

I’m sorry to hear that. Good on you talking it out and being honest with yourself. I highly recommend finding a friend who flies and going with them from time to time. It will help. As for confusing winds and landing downwind, I’ve been there. It does mess you up. For me, drawing pictures of the runway and wind before entering a traffic pattern really helps, so I do it every time now.

I’d encourage you to get up with an instructor as well. I have my PPL and still have elements of my flying that I need to polish and work on. For the stuff that I can rent and do solo, I work on it. For the stuff that I’d like help with, I work with an instructor. Most of them are pretty open and willing to help.

Question: How would you check the brakes "prior to landing"? Around 6 minutes, he talks about checking brakes before landing, and if they're not working go missed and land on a long runway. How is that possible? How can you check the brakes in midflight?

My wife survived a crash with her father. She flew after that and years later her very first flight with me was a night flight around DFW for a Christmas light flight around the metroplex. It's all about faith in pilot and process and less about the wildcard of the machine.

I fly paramotors. I don’t know may people who I fly with who haven’t had some kind of crash. It’s embarrassing but we are humans doing things that most humans can’t do. Mistakes happen. Give yourself a break Dan! Hope sharing your story helps

In some cases you don't, I don't fly in the type of aircraft I had my accident in. I was considering moving on anyway due to the high cost involved but was listening to the "sucken cost fallacy"

A crash shouldn't necessarily be looked at as negative. Maybe it was the planes fault (mechanical) and then you skillfully avoided getting you or others killed. Maybe by finding the nicest place to crash and getting her crashed more softly than otherwise might have happened if you were lousy pilot. Before any prospective employer (or anyone else) dings you they should find out all the facts.

This guy just wanted to blame his accident on a mechanical failure, instead of pilot error. For one the landing gear does not retract into a pressurized wheel well. It’s also called a brake cylinder not a wheel cylinder. If he had air in his brake lines that’s from a hydraulic leak or just not properly bled brakes. He probably came in too fast, and landed halfway down the runway, because he was behind the aircraft. He defaulted to a CFI because he now had an accident on his record.

I appreciate the comment, but you’re pretty much wrong on every single point you make. Joe, took what I thought was mechanical failure, and made it clear that it was a pilot error, his error. He didn’t default to anything after that. And as a matter fact, became a DPE.

@@TakingOff That’s not a good DPE if he thinks his brakes didn’t work because the pressurization system leaked air into his brake system. Path of least resistance, total bs. Ya he said it was his fault because he didn’t know that and he should have. It’s simply not possible.

A good episode, but, in light of the content, it would have been even better without the rock music at the end. It came in too soon and jarred the atmosphere of reflection created by the video content and style.

Gyro have changed so much .Not really. Let's see a engine mounted to a frame . check, number two a free rotating rotor blade overhead mounted at the proper angle of attack . check, and a rudder and maybe a vertical fin. check. Oh you can cancel the engine if you want to tow it by submarine like the Germans did . Actually they are almost foolproof until a Fool is at the controls.

Brakes are used to stop an airplane they're never be used on the runway That's what the runners for that's what nose gear steering is for again brakes are for stopping the airplane on the ramp.
