I crash my kitfox airplane ! My aircraft engine dies on takeoff and I was left with an engine out situation and had to preform an emergency landing. Flying off airport, preforming bush flying STOL takeoff and landings.
there were no casualties and I survived. My aircraft runs out of gas fuel during take off. I wasn't high enough to land my airplane on the highway or road. I am not a student pilot.

Great Job in keeping cool, flying the airplane, and walking away unharmed. What I find even more impressive is that you honestly and openly diagnosed the problem, fixed the problem so it won't happen again, and then explained the cause publicly so that the rest of us can learn from it. @@cadolf3 ... Vapor lock... If you suspect the possibility you run the engine several minutes at 50% while on the ground. Avgas might have helped. Most of these guys use non ethanol car gas Also nearly all aircraft that I'm familiar with have a sediment drain/water separator on the fuel bowl. You could drain enough to insure there is no vapor in the lines.. Also insulating the lines to prevent heat soak. 50 yr CP AP here. Never been around a kitfoxes or rotax.

The way it shut down didn’t act like fuel starvation. It was too sudden, usually fuel starvation surges and while quickly doing so it’s still more gradual than the sudden drop. I personally think this is more an ignition issue. Thoughts?

As someone who has also lost an engine on takeoff. Good job in not freaking out! I was fortunate that I had a little more runway in front of me when mine died. I was able to brake hard and get it stopped about 20ft from the end of the runway! Glad the damage wasn’t that bad on the flip. Be sure to double check the vertical tail because it can take a bit of a hit on the flip. Might not be visible at first but something internal might get bent. The last thing you want is to lose that in flight!

I used to have vapor lock issues before installing the return line with my 912ULS. In that time, it always manifested itself as being unable to start again, and would then result in the carb bowls flooding. This may be due to differences in the way the fuel lines on a Zenith run compared to a Fox. When I did the upgrade, I also took a good long, hard look at the fuel system and found evidence that the vented fuel caps were not allowing enough air into the system, and installed "pitot tube" style caps. Question: Were you running 92 or MoGas at the time? The "common wisdom" is that 100LL is less prone to vapor lock on a Rotax, but getting data points is pretty hard.

This kind of videos are very valuable. It takes guts to show what and when somethings goes wrong! *kudos* to you! For you this was a *LUCKY* *DAY* ! Everyone watching this video can LEARN from it. Experience is the sum of all the mistakes done... I won't say you stepped too hard on the brakes - who would NOT brake to stop the plane from going into the water? That is just *hindsight* - not a true fault. You made the correct action to brake. The only bad judgement you made was RUSHING it. Had you done everything like the plane had been on ground for days, this would not have happened. This happened BECAUSE you are SKILLED with your plane - and young. *Checklists* make sure skilled pilots slow down... If you rush things you miss things and they will bite back - with some bad luck. Running the engine for a while before takeoff is NOT only to warm the engine, it also makes sure the engine will continue to run, it gives you time to detect any signals, instrument readouts, noise, vibrations that are unusual or not normal. Checklists are not only for beginners to learn to get a license, they are there to remind skilled pilots that gravity is unforgiving, that the checklist is a tool to make it as safe as possible. For you this was a *LUCKY* *DAY* !!! You learned a lot, so did I watching it. Thank you so very much for posting this video! Safe flying!

Given the circumstances, you did a great job of getting back on tierra firma! Boy, I would eliminate any chance of that ever happening again! I have a supercub (O-320B2B) and I've never seen that happen or heard of it. Cubs have 2 header tanks (one on the backside of the firewall and one behind the baggage compartment for the left and right wing tanks) but I'm not clear on how or why the vapor lock would occur. In the cub the carburetor is underneath the engine block. I know vapor lock happened on old cars/trucks many years ago. Good luck on your flying and safe travels!
@pierrewind11
@pierrewind11 5 лет назад
Carbureted engines never get this issue. This is on injection engines only. On these engines the fuel lines are directly going to the cylinders. As such the fuel lines get hot and fuel vaporises as soon as the fuel pressure gets low (shutdown). This is a very frequent issue on hot starts on hot weather. It usually is solved by some good priming and or engine cooldown. However it normally doesn’t create an issue when the engine is running.
@billroberts9182
@billroberts9182 5 лет назад
Thx for the info, however why did cars from the 40's and 50's periodically get vapor lock? They were not injected back in those days- I think it was because the fuel lines ran too close to the exhaust manifold and then vapor locked when extra hot? Sound reasonable?
@pierrewind11
@pierrewind11 5 лет назад
I think that is a correct assumption. I am not fully aware of this specific case, but in all cases temperature is a perfect ingredient to vaporise fuel (as is low pressure). (Gas is already very volatile by itself)

I've had similar issues with 912 mainly due to the fact that our mogas contains ethanol which has a lower vaporization temp. However as this problem is not uncommon, my taildragger had a return line and additional electric fuel pump that allowed for safe operations. Adding those might be a cure for your problem, only downside beeing annother gauge to watch. BTW Both the plane and captain are reusable, so this was a perfect landing ;)

@@JonasMarcinko A general tip: Have the music always more quiet than the rest and not louder or the same volume like you do

@@JonasMarcinko or just do away with the music. MTV died in the 80s.

Jonas, it was nice to meet you at HSF. My buddy and I were in the 172 picking your and your uncles brains about crossing the Rockies. Did this happen before or after HSF? Either way, pleasure to meet you, and glad it worked out.

Chris Pitts it happened before. I tried to upload it the morning we were flying out but didn’t have time. Nice meeting you guys!

Trent Palmer sent me here. Glad to see only the plane is bruised. Watched most of your videos since. You have some sick shots on your channel. Specifically whippin' air shitties while a band plays and a smoked tiger plane cuts screen. Shits dope. Belly and back flops are for the bold.

Kudos for putting this out there - sh*t just happens sometimes. Had a flip myself due to severe carby icing after T/O (a very old Continental engine with short stub exhausts and very little heat collection for icing) and having to put down in a plowed field. Same as you, other than a busted prop, no damage - except to my ego when the local News turned up just as we were pulling the plane back over onto its wheels to remove the wings and trailer it back to the hanger 😩

Actually you did really good, it was the worst time for an engine to quit, so under those circumstances you did excellent, quick reaction saved you and you got away with minimal damage. Looks like all the adrenaline pumping through you after the crash made you crash your drone. I am glad you and both of the aircraft are fine. Stay safe my friend.

Yes, if this or that then maybe ... doesn't matter. You had few choices and milliseconds to analyze and decide. Well done. Heard Nick went down and checked to see if Trent was saying anything when I saw your page. Also liked the way you started the vid. No clickbait here. Subscribing.
