This is Tuomas metaphorical suicide so he didn't have to do it for real. From his depression. After the backlash from firing his childhood friend. The "open letter" to Tarja. Everyone turned on him. Fans, friends, media, even the Prime Minister of Finland commented on it. Even to this day. He tells soundman to turn vocals off in his earpiece. At the end you see Marco and Emmpu checking on Tuomas. If you notice. From the talking part "have three minutes to live" it's exactly three minutes(running time) till the pendulum(throat) slash. The last part "mother an father" are actually what Tuomas parents said to him at the time. About the whole situation. Which helped him get through it.

To understand the story you need to know the backstory. Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts. 1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano. "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. 2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. 3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part. 4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. 5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.

I think part 3 is mainly about Edgar Allen Poe. I don't know if Tuomas ever sailed the Pacific but Poe did.

Actually a great reaction from you. Tuomas is a mastermind of a composer with poetic skills, far beyond us mortals. Here he discribes the emotions after they fired Tarja - the emotions he felt by himself, but also the emotions and blame that were brought to him by the fans and a lot of other people, including the prime minister of Finland! Marco are doing it excellent in his screaming part, delivering their message and feelings. Floor on the other hand are the storyteller and in charge of transferring the overall emotions and thoughts from Tuomas's family and friends, to the audience - and she is doing that like only Floor have the ability to do - mind blowing. (Tuomas had the technicians kill Floor's voice in his ear plugs at the end, to keep his concentration) This is emotions delivered in music and lyrics. These 6 bandmembers are probably the only ones who can create and perform a masterpiece like this.

@cinderellsworth
@cinderellsworth 3 года назад
As with most Nightwish songs, Poet and the Pendulum is written from the point of view of Tuomas. Floor just has the uncanny ability to put his feelings/emotions into her brain, and they come out in her voice distilled to sweet perfection! And I know that Floor has no trouble with translating his feelings through her female voice because she cares so much about him. She was talking about Poet and the Pendulum in her weekly live-chats on her channel here while back and she is very protective of Tuomas. I'm glad he has friends like her that surround him....not to mention his beautiful wife, Johanna Kurkela 😉💖....

This song is a Masterpiece and the most personal song for Tuomas about his pain in letting Tarja go from the band. The part "I cannot cry, cause the shoulder cries more" One interpretation has been that Tuomas couldn't go to Tarja and cry on her shoulder, because Tarja was also in pain and was crying more. So he had to be stronger. I have listened to this song many times and every single time get tears in my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts of this most incredible song 🙏

Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears. Here is the open letter Tuomas / the band wrote towards Tarja: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Tarja_Turunen And here is her response: nightwish.fandom.com/wiki/Open_Letter_from_Tarja_Turunen From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed" They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it. One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet. Greetz from a German-Dutch concert photographer

Nothing wrong with tearing up. I cry so hard during this song. I know men are made fun of for crying but, most women find it sweet. Especially given the topic of suicide. Tuomas has the have them turn his in-ear monitors off. If you watch very closely you will see him tear up. They have resolved their issue with each other. There are a few videos of them with both Floor and Tarja.

Hey guys. This song is how I feel, mentally and emotionally, when the demons in my head try and get me to take my own life. But you know why I fight? Because of music. Because of songs like Jee Veerey, by an Indian Folk Metal band named Bloodywood -- which, if you already haven't, please react to it. They are some of the greatest people in the world. And over a year ago, their song Jee Veerey *literally* saved my life. Even now, it's hard to listen to this song, when you walk alone, and deal with erratic bouts of depression. But I keep fighting, because I dont know any other way to keep living. #MusicSavesLives #MusicIsMyWeapon #OneFriendCanSaveALife

A fantastic reaction to an incredible song. On a lot of the Nightwish songs there are subtitles so it's worth checking before you start the reaction, the subtitles are unobtrusive enough and don't interfere with the enjoyment of the performance. The reference to empathica in the first part is to Stephen Kings Dark Tower series.

Check out Master Passion Greed and yet Bye Bye Beautiful. These songs are continuing that story. If Poet is about feelings of Thomas in general, then Master Passion Greed are Tuomas's words to Marcelo, husband of Tarja, who in fact stealed her from the band, and Bye Bye Beautiful - are his farewell words to her.

I feel like Floor revived this song, the album version with Anette feels almost robotic, I mean she has a beautiful voice, but didn't really do it for this one, while Floor gave it every emotion Tuomas must have felt when he wrote it, also Marko, she brings the pain out, he is pure anger, both are perfect, also love how he and Emppu take turns to check on Tuomas, I used to cry every single time I heard it, goosebumps everywhere, especially in The Pacific and Mother & Father, those two parts still get me so emotional. The part where it says "I'm afraid, so afraid..." Gives me so much anxiety, even today :( then Tuomas' gesture of cutting his own throat, gives me an awful feeling of desperation. At the very end, Floor sounds like a mourning siren for the loss of a loved one, in this case, our poet

Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iEzZRMthhXU.html It is absolutely not shameful to cry during or after a Nightwish song, especially this one. From the comments you made it sound like you did not do any research on the background of this song. Normally that is not a problem but in this case you miss a lot of the content of this song. Basically the song is about the firing of their very first vocalist Tarja Turunen that has been a part of the band from the start. Tuomas and Tarja have been close friends from childhood onward and he was also the person who asked her to join. So firing her from the band was a hard thing for him to do. Because he knew he was also loosing a dear friend. But ever since she met, her now husband and manager, convinced her that she was the star of the band and would be better of solo, the atmosphere in the band deteriorated. Although it was decided that she would record one more album with the band before going solo things got so bad by the end of their last tour with her they decided to make a clean break after their last concert of the tour (The end of era was the last show released as dvd). I think you can kind of see the tension in the band if you take a closer look at it. They fired her directly after the show was done by handing her a letter. To be clear to the fans on why they thought this was necessary they published the letter on line at the same time (not the best way to handle this). Although they had expected some critique they were totally surprised by the enormous backlash they received from the press and fans. The biggest brunt of the backlash was directed at Tuomas directly who was thrown in to a depression because of this. He also did no longer see a future for the band he had worked so hard for. He considered suicide but knew this would hurt his close family and friends so he decided to commit suicide artistically by this song. At one point he even moved back in to the house of his parents (mother and father) who put him back together again and this gave him the strength to make a new start.

This song is about when they released Tarja. And it is the suicide of Thoumas. His parents convinced him to do it in a song instead of real life. Read the story about this song.

Here ya go. Try this deciphering of the lyrics... THE CLIFF NOTES VERSION OF POET & THE PENDULUM My Analysis of the Lyrics [Legal Disclaimer: This is, in no way, purporting to be a biography of the band; has, in no way, ever been stated explicitly in public by the band; has, in no way, been verified or authorized by the band. It is merely my personal, rational analysis based on stitiching together publicly available information to try to better understand the mind and heart of the composer when he wrote this---a very fascinating quest in this case!] As an overview, I assume you immediately recognize the allusion to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit & The Pendulum" wherein the victim is strapped unto a stone altar and must lay watching the ever-so-slowly descending pendulum blade, forcing him to contemplate for hours the agonizing death to come when the blade eventually starts cutting him in half. With Poe in mind as the overall metaphor, notice that the song begins with the whispered, "The end" and ends with the whispered, "The beginning." Tuomas told us in lyrics of a previous song written years before this that he felt like he "needed to die in order to feel alive." The metaphorical suicide in this song carried out that plan. The suicide (both literal and career suicide) is introduced at the beginning as "the end." After that is over, the rebirth of his spirit, his romance, his creativity, and his career is given us at the end as "the beginning." A pretty clever poetic device in my humble opinion! "Movement I: White Lands of Empathica" This part is like an "Executive Summary" or the "Frontmatter" of the book he is about to present us. The ghostly, ethereal intro is provided by, I'm told, a choir boy from the Metro Voices of London contract choir company. It gives us a succinct summary of the whole song: "The songwriter's dead. The blade fell upon him; Taking him to the white lands; Of Empathica; Of Innocence." The White Lands of Empathica is a mythical land in the Dark Tower fantasy movie, and I conclude he is using it as somewhat analogous to an afterlife destination in "End World." "Movement II: Home" This part lays out his living hell in the normal "home" world before his abrupt transition to End World when the descending pendulum blade strikes him. "The dreamer and the wine; Poet without a rhyme. A widowed writer torn apart by chains of hell." Tuomas is clearly both the poet and the dreamer. He is a fan of wine. Whenever you see Empuu slugging a Corona on stage, Tuomas is sipping from a bottle of wine behind his keyboards. He is without a rhyme because poetry comes from the heart, and his heart is currently dead. He views himself as being "widowed" in that his angel has had her "angel wings burnt to dust" by dismissal from the band. The chains of hell tearing him apart were the opposing requirements of his heart and head: the desire to keep her in the band and continue wallowing in his pain versus the harsh business decision required to end the problem and give both careers a new start, both Tarja's and Nightwish's. "One last perfect verse; Is still the same old song. Oh Christ how I hate what I have become!" Tuomas is telling us here that the chain of hell pulling him to maintain the status quo has driven him to keep trying to write "that one perfect verse" that will get through to her and "fix" the situation, making the problem go away even though his head tells him this is hopeless and futile. He has told us this same thing in lyrics from previous songs written years ago also such as in "Nemo" ("This line the last endeavor to find the missing life line!") and "Dead Boy's Poem" ("Walk within my poetry. This dying music: my loveletter to nobody.") The continued futile attempts seem, to him, as "still the same old song" in that he keeps trying to say the same thing expecting a different result. He hates that circumstances have driven him to become this person. "Take me home. Get away, run away, fly away! Lead me astray to dreamer's hideaway! I cannot cry 'cause the shoulder cries more; I cannot die, I, a whore for the cold world!" Tuomas often refers to himself as the dreamer, the introvert, the escapist. This chorus is revealing his inner escapist telling him to run from the problem that he might hideaway from it rather than face it. He has no shoulder left to cry on. He is finding no more joy in pursuing his passion of writing and performing music for "the cold world" who cares nothing for his sorrows and pain. They only want him for his music. This makes him tantamount to a whore, selling his mind and body to that cold world without joy in return. "Forgive me: I have but two faces. One for the world; One for God; Save me!" He asks for forgiveness for this. His whore face he presents to the cold world. He tells us about this face again on the next album in "Song of Myself" ("All that great heart lying still; In silent suffering; Smiling like a clown until the show has come to an end. What's left for encore; Is the same old Dead Boy's song; Sung in silence") When the "show has come to an end" he has his other face only for God. Note that he is not religious in real life, and that is well known, but the metaphor which the rest of the world understands is appropriate and meaningful nonetheless. "My home was there and then; Those meadows of heaven. Adventure-filled days; One with every smiling face." He is imagining here his anticipation of the death to come at the hand of the pendulum blade. One second he is home in the normal world. The next second he is in the meadows of heaven; apparently Empathica. "Please, no more words; Thoughts from a severed head. No more praise! Tell me once my heart goes right!" He wants no more words of advice or encouragement from others. His thoughts are as those from a severed head: useless to effect response of the body. His head has been severed from his heart by the "chains of hell" in verse one... or has it been severed by Poe's blade? Or is it both? Or are they both really the same thing? Tuomas is a master of double meaning, and he uses that poetic device often throughout much of Nightwish's lyrics. He wants no more praise for his musical talent from the cold world. He just wants, for once, to be reassured that his heart has made the right decision. Continued below as Reply #1--->

---> Reply #1, Continued from main comment: "Movement III: The Pacific" This part is the pensive, dreamlike longing for the life of innocence the way it used to be. As a side note it is also a verse which caused some obvious tension between him and the replacement singer Annette. It is supposed to be sung in the ultra-high octave range similar to the intro to evoke the dreamlike quality. Annette did a beautiful job on this on the studio album "Dark Passion Play" (so he knew she was capable of that range), but seemed to refuse to sing it correctly when live. In some live vid captures you can see him snap his head up from the keyboards and give her the evil stink eye that just seems to scream out, "We talked about this back stage, and you promised to do it right!" But who knows. We can only speculate on that. Floor, of course, sings it to perfection! "Sparkle my scenery; With turquoise waterfalls; With beauty underneath; The Ever Free. Tuck me in beneath the blue; Beneath the pain, beneath the rain. Goodnight kiss for a child in time; Swaying blade my lullaby." An overriding theme of the band is that of being "Oceansouls." The imagery of peaceful blue water, sirens calling seamen to their watery deaths, the blue mist atmosphere during the orchestral intermezzo of Ghost Love Score, etc., pervades nearly everything. He sees peace and beauty beneath the water...in this case waterfalls...as a place for his inner escapist to hide from the pain. The kiss of death from the approaching blade has become this child's lullaby. Tuomas often makes reference to the innocent heart of the little boy inside throughout many of Nightwish's songs. "On the shore we sat and hoped; Under the same pale moon; Whose guiding light chose you; Chose you all." This verse drops back out of the dreamlike ultra-high octave to give us more real world thoughts. If one acquires some familiarity with the formation of the band, this simple sentence is pretty unmistakably a reference to that time. The concept for Nightwish was allegedly posed to his founding bandmates (including that first, dismissed singer) over a night time campfire in the Finnish wilderness during a group camping trip. It was probably on a lakeshore, since Finland is a land of 10,000 lakes, and water imagery plays such a large role in many lyrics. There has also been important references to swimming "in places no one has seen before" under the midnight full moon, such as in the touching poem at the end of "Song of Myself." He is telling, probably not us but the other band members ...including the absent singer should she ever hear this verse..., that they sat on that lakeshore and hoped for success as Nightwish, all together under the same pale moon. The guiding light of the moon chose them ALL (a pointed jab at the dismissed singer, I believe) to be in this experimental project together. The spoken word verse, "I'm afraid. I'm so afraid; Of being raped again, and again, and again! I know I will die alone. But loved," alarms some listeners with its darkness, particularly because it seems to be spoken in a female voice, although it may be spoken by the choir boy again...don't know for sure. But either way, this represents Tuomas's last thoughts as he lays with only three minutes remaining before the pendulum blade first begins to strike his torso, "raping" him again and again and again as it swings. He knows he is going to die alone in this pit of sadness beneath the pendulum, but he also knows his family loves him. "You live long enough to hear the sound of guns, long enough to find yourself screaming every night, long enough to see your friends betray you." Not sure about the "guns" reference. It likely refers to the cruel shots fired by the news tabloids---a very big thing in Finland when it comes to covering metal bands. He found himself screaming (crying?) every night, both from the pain he lived before the "death" and the pain from the cruel things being written in the press. The reference to seeing your friends betray you is pretty certainly another jab at the singer, as he plainly describes in the infamous Open Letter the dismissal in terms of her being a very old and dear friend who chose to betray him. Keeping the art of double meanings in mind, it also likely refers to seeing many of his friends betray him afterward by siding with the cruel press. "For years I've been strapped unto this altar. Now I only have 3 minutes and counting. I just wish the tide would catch me first and give me a death I always longed for." He is telling us that, unlike Poe's character who was strapped to the stone altar for hours, he saw this pendulum blade approaching for years. If we map lyrics on to the timing of events in real life we can see this shift that suggests when he knew everything had started to go south. To what might the "3 minute" statement be referring? I believe the first strike of the pendulum blade was the moment when he handed over the envelope containing the Open Letter to Tarja or her manager or whoever was the physical recipient. It was at that point that it became too late to recall the act. Torpedo in the water! I surmise, based on this, it was about 3 minutes from the ending of the last song at the "End of An Era" concert (during which he made her sing about the impending "burning of her angel wings to dust") to the time he handed off the letter. And this was the final agonizing 3 minutes where he knew the decision had to be final. The opening verse of that last song even includes the ominous warning, "This night will hurt you like never before!" which she had to sing about herself. Continued below in Reply #2--->

---> Reply #2, Continued from Reply #1 above: "Movement IV: Dark Passion Play" This part channels the title of the album. He is plainly telling us here that the whole affair was more than just a business decision. If the band's early lyrics were a romantic passion play as a way for the escapist to express love implicitly ...as he tells us in "Dead Boy's Poem," "Sing what you can't say; forget what you can't play; hasten to drown into beautiful eyes; walk within my poetry, this dying music; my loveletter to nobody."... then this was a passion play with very dark intentions. "Second robber to the right of Christ; Cut in half - infanticide; The world will rejoice today; As the crows feast on the rotting poet!" The second robber to the right of Christ was Dismas, the penitent thief who asked for mercy, as Tuomas did in Part II, "God save me!" and is rewarded by being taken to Paradise. (Empathica?) Here, Dismas is cut in half by the pendulum blade. It is infanticide because we must remember the frequent referrals to himself as having the innocent heart of a child...the dead boy. The crows feasting on the dead poet, whose legacy is rotting as a result of the Open Letter, are most certainly the tabloids of the day feasting on the corpse of his career. And the "cold world," to which he was a whore, will rejoice at this feasting and muckraking because they were so angry at his dismissal of their beloved angel or "Christess" as Tuomas explicitly calls her in "Master Passion Greed." "Everyone must bury their own; No place to bury the heart of stone; Now he's in hell, serves him well; Slain by the bell, tolling for his farewell!" The rest of the band will have to bury his legacy, but they will find no place that can bury his heart of stone that was so cold as to write the Open Letter. The cold world will condemn him to hell, and conclude that it serves him well for what he did. The "bell" that had been tolling for his farewell is, I believe, a subtle reference to David Gilmour's line about "The Division Bell" which appeared earlier in that concert when they performed the cover of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes." Out of all the great covers Tuomas could have selected, why THAT one? Gilmour's lyrics clearly had some deep, special meaning to him. If one relistens to all of Gilmour's lines in the context of what was going to happen at the end of the show, one can see a metaphorical playout of Nightwish's history, penned eerily by Gilmour before they were even born. "The morning dawned upon his altar; Remains of the dark passion play. Performed by his friends without shame; Spitting on his grave as they came!" This refers to his perception of the morning after the Open Letter became public knowledge, and the tabloid shitstorm started. "His friends" refers to the remaining band members who would need to carry on performing without him, perhaps absolving themselves of shame while spitting, figuratively, on his memory. The spoken-word verse recited like a eulogy: "Today, in the year of our Lord 2005, Tuomas was called from the cares of the world. He stopped crying at the end of each beautiful day. The music he wrote had too long been without silence. He was found naked and dead, with a smile in his face, a pen, and 1000 pages of erased text." 2005 was the year of Tarja's dismissal. Tuomas names himself personally erasing all doubt that this is about him and not an imaginary character in a tome. "The music....too long been without silence" seems misworded at first, but it draws the listener to ponder the sentence a bit longer. The music, i.e., those "last perfect verses [that are] still the same old song," had been performed for the "cold world" continuously for so many years. They deserved to enjoy some silence! The "1000 pages of erased text" refers to the large amount of creative genius that still lay inside him, waiting to see the light of day as songs for Tarja but were now dead and gone, never to be released. "Movement V: Mother & Father" While the death-by-pendulum and the spoken eulogy are the violent and morose climax of the story, this part is the tender denouement; Tuomas at home receiving comfort and reassurance from his parents. "Be still, my son; You're home. Oh when did you become so cold? The blade will keep on descending. All you need is to feel my love." The blade will keep on descending would seem to refer to a caution given by his mother that the repeated pendulum cuts levelled by the tabloids would continue to cut deeper... "again and again and again." He needs only to feel his mother's comforting love during this time. "Search for beauty, find your shore. Try to save them all, bleed no more. You have such oceans within; In the end I will always love you!" This verse seems to tell us about his mother's encouragement to gather himself together and go on. His metaphorical death is over, and it is now time to search for beauty and find his shore. It would seem that "try to save them all" means he needs to continue on with the band because the careers of three other members plus all the behind the scenes crew were on the line. Sounds like she admonished him to stop "bleeding" and that trying to save their careers was the right thing to do. She encouraged him by reminding him of the oceans of creative genius that still lay sleeping within him. "The beginning." We can all now be thankful for his mother's wise words of advice! Nightwish did, indeed, experience a new beginning and has risen to new heights, giving such a beautiful gift of music and poetry to the world. We all owe Tuomas a debt of gratitude we could never possibly repay! ***END OF LYRIC ANALYSIS***
