In this episode, I say goodbye to my friend Charly Sinewan and I cross the border from El Salvador into Guatemala. Things turn quite serious quite quickly, as I try to cross the lava fields of the Pacaya volcano...

I love all the suggestions on how I should have done it, but just so I don’t have to reply the same things all the time 🤪 Yes, of course I lowered the tire pressure 🙃 No, I didn’t have another choice of tires, it were these ones or none. Ordering tires ahead is logistically impossible due to extremely slow shipping/importing times and me not knowing when I will be where 🙈 Sometimes I get lucky with tires I manage to find on the road, and sometimes I get very unlucky. I will complain oh yes, but will have to deal with it nevertheless 😂 Oh, and it was too steep and loose to ‘walk’ the bike up.. Turns out, lava fields are not easy to ride on after all, who would have thought. 🤯

We're all just so glad you're safe Noraly. I'm 67 and have never been in a bike but I live watching your adventures. I have 4 daughters around your age and Im always anxious for your well-being. A thought that came across my mind is that you had a few happy days with Charly and then you had to say good bye. That in itself can be a bit sad and daunting and probably affected your strong spirit when you had that struggle up the hill. God bless you Noraly and keep you safe. Love from Cape Town, South Africa.

This is one of the hardest tracks I have ever done, it has the difficulty of the sand, plus the rocks one, plus the slope. Few people ride a travel motorbike here, much less with luggage, and almost nobody alone. Congratulations Noraly, I know what I am saying. keep going!

Oh, I have had many moments where I am saying to the screen what Noraly needs to do... but then I tell myself she has actually ridden a motorcycle more than half way around our world. We must admit to ourselves: this woman knows a thing or two about getting places on a motorcycle. Noraly, I have over 300,000 Km of motorcycle riding and racing experience, and I have seen you do things that I have not done. Success is an effective response to criticism!
@JackieB12003
@JackieB12003 2 года назад
I completely agree, Agent JayZ. I have decades of offroad riding experience and sometimes find myself thinking "Noraly, maybe try this...." in a helpful manner. But then I think about her experience, how well she rode in the Kalahari (Noraly is a legit offroad racer), the fact that a camera can never convey the steepness of an incline accurately, and conclude that Noraly has probably tried everything I know to do and a lot more. In the case of this ride on the volcano, the tires just aren't able to get any grip on that surface. It's fine dust on top of jagged rocks. I'm sending her all good vibes and looking forward to Noraly working her way out of this predicament and she surely will.

The Go Pro does tend to flatten out the terrain in frame. It's easy for us fans to forget how physically hard some of this riding is, mostly because you're skilled. It's those tires for sure! The perfect setup for Alaska in the terrain that you love would be Pirelli MT-21 (size 90/90-21) on the front and a Dunlop D606 (size 120/90-18) on the rear. They're street legal yet made for off road. If the tires keep performing less than desired, or if availability is a problem , is there a way the itchy boots army can mail them ahead of you to a shop in a bigger city? If you (probably) already know this, sorry. i just hate to see those tires hold you back. With your perseverance it's the ONLY thing holding you back lol. Also; Those drone shots are world class.

@hill north Eh? Pirelli MT-21 is a pretty aggressive DOT front tire. MT-21 and D606 is really common out in the western USA. I run them on a KTM 500. They may be too aggressive for her. Moto-Z makes some nice adventure tires.

In 88" I tried to take my 78' Goldwing across Labrador, east to west. I didn't get too far out of town when the road became something more like a sand and gravel pit than a road. I gallantly soldiered on, riding through soft sand, steep hills and onto large cobble stone looking rocks. It slowed me down to 10 miles an hour, mainly because the oil in the forks were heating up and getting thin, losing the shock absorption of the forks. All that caused the forks to bottom out hard. It sounded terrible. about 40 miles out, I pulled over to take a break and do some thinking. Even though it was my birthday, I came to the realization that if I had a break down on the far side of the province, I would have a tough time finding a way just to get parts, let alone someone to fix it. So, I turned back, and I was glad I did. A bike that weighed over 650 pounds, plus tires meant for long distance, just wasn't the right combination to use for that adventure. Sure I was disappointed, but it allowed me to go on with the rest of my tour and have something to talk about. (And as you can see, I like to talk, which is partly why they call me Gabby) Do what you can do out there, and stay safe.
