I cut $15,000 out of this rough opal. One of my best wins!

Don't you just love it when it works out and you have the best day ever. This rough piece has made my day today. It really didn't look like much to begin with but I had an inkling that it may cut a beautiful black opal inside.
Wow was I right. As I ground further inside this piece it just got brighter and brighter and blacker as well. Not to mention the pattern became stronger and more distinct.
Watch and enjoy this piece turn from a bluish rock to a rocking $15,000 green blue high domed gem.

My aunt has an opal mine in MW Nevada (USA)... she doesn't cut or polish the stones she digs, but sells them to people like Justin. She mines for the fun of it, as a retired registered nurse, she gets a great pension, but when she finds some nice bits, she sells them (I get the small ones free - to set in small earrings and such)... she's got almost two hundred acres out there and half of it produces color. She gets some fiery reds on occasion but like you said, nothing like Justin's.

What makes a great RU-vid presenter? Well it starts off with a passion for what you do. The fact that someone like myself can comeback and watch videos over and over yet still feel like it is the first time. It is very easy to be in the edge of your seat as well as waiting for the wonderous mystery to reveal itself. Like an opal detective finding the secret location of its treasure. Thanks Randy I actually have a video coming soon about why we don't facet opals :-)
@marymaynor3345
@marymaynor3345 4 года назад
It's really quite simple. Only stone's. Like diamond's and other clear or translucent gems like the diamond needs to be faceted to show color. The opal already shows color and doesn't need to be faceted to show it's beauty. When a diamond isn't faceted it only looks clear but when it's been faceted it shows light from all angles. The opal shows colors naturally. The only opal that gets any worth from facets is the etheopen opal because of it's translucent color or should I say lack of color in my opinion.
@kwong7058

It was just over 5 and a half carats of 18 karat gold in 'graduation' ring style. It was really to big for my small ego, and I was constantly in fear that I would hit the high dome on something and break it. I finally sold it at a bargain price, but 3 times the cost I paid ... some compensation for loss of 'style', but not losing the worry :)

I was reading the comments while watching , and got a faster heart beat in the expectation of the drop. I skipped few times for 15 sec, because I was so tense and unpatient. Near the end I thought I missed the fall on the concrete. So I searched in the comments for the timestamp of it... and missed the incident! Had to rewatch. Phew! That was a near catastrophe! Good luck in future, and thanks for sharing your work.

So exciting! to watch this promising stone turn into such a shiny jumping beauty! And yess... this heartbeat- and breathstopping moment of no return... waiting for the ding ding sound and listening very carefully to locate the impact zone before diving under the table... I know...
