I am sure you could! If it were me, I would work up a small sample using the granny square stitch and try it. That way you can make sure it works before you try it on his shirt.

There is a different way to do vertical, and I'm Trying to find that video. It's called "steek" or "steeking" but it's very difficult to sort out the knitting results because knitters use a crochet hook to steek. They purposely knit a large piece, then "steek" it down the front (for cardigans, for example) and then cut right down the middle to separate the pieces. Crochet isn't a cut and dry, so it's not done often. I also think it's knit a bit differently in order to prep for steeking. I found Brianna K's video: e0aENBmoNUg (pop that in after the "v=" in your address bar since YT won't allow video links), but she locks the how to behind her course. She's a knitter who is applying knitting techniques to crochet, and she's Brilliant about it; however, not everyone can part with $50 just for steeking lessons (though you'd get far more than that, I'm not kidding about the cool things she's figured out). Maybe with knowing it's called "steek" you can help me search for a video or instructions. :) Here are the things I've found so far: A video where a gal cut her blanket, but the video doesn't show the cutting process (Maartje Yarn & Other Treasures). 😢 I do have one web site, but again, links. If you search the term "how-to-steek-in-crochet-work" look for a result for lilleystitches. There's a question posed on Gransnet about steeking crochet, and knitters are saying they're scared enough to steek knit and can't imagine trying to do it in crochet. Ugh! lindadeancrochet is a site that has a vertical demonstration, but it's limited. Most people just use a sewing machine and zig zag stitch or they wantonly cut and turn the fraying into fringe. The DIY Journalist on YT has a crochet anatomy video that explains what you're looking at when considering cutting (where the top of stitches actually are). Ravebuddies on Tik Tok (I was desperate!) shows cutting a long piece of rib stitch. "Cutting crochet vertically" got some results, but with diminishing returns on content worth - mostly Tik Tok with "follow for part 2" but I don't use Tik Tok (maybe you do). I hope something in there turns out useful.

Oh boy, I’m sorry but I don’t. Going down the rows would result in cutting multiple times in one stitch and I’m afraid that would just unravel in too many places to be able to catch the all the loops. If I ever try it, I’ll definitely record it 😆

I haven't tried it, but I think if you really looked closely and worked slow it could be done.

No! Don't cut any crochet vertically. The stitches running vertical carry the yarn from one row to the next row. If you cut that yarn it will unravel your project.
