After Mark's challenge of a half marathon per day over on GTN, he thought it was only fair to challenge Hank to something similar on the bike - 100km a day for a week, 700km of riding in total. Riding your bike 100km every day is a challenge for most of us, especially around a full-time job! Hank was going to need help, so we teamed up with our friends Nuzest to help fuel him with their plant-based nutrition, and Whoop to monitor the effect this challenge had on his body.

A bit over 500k last year, as part of a challenge with some colleagues to see who could bike the longest in a week. Somehow I made second place despite being overweight and usually only doing 20k a day. It was very hard, but worth it. We are going to do the same challenge again this year.

From a recovery perspective, 100km and a half marathon might be about the same, but from a time commitment I'm sure they're not even close! Mark was surely sub 2:00 on most of them, so Hank is doing twice (or perhaps more) the hours in a week. Brutal.

That seems to be much harder than the regular bike holiday week on Mallorca where we used to do more than 600 km in 5 days each year in March but in brilliant weather conditions in group rides and not around work. That makes a big difference because I don't feel sore and not too tired afterwards. I admire the guides who do this every week over there for months and always riding in the wind. It is really tough when they are guiding the advanced groups which do an average of 27 km/h and more every day. Some of these guides are 60 years old and older. Very impressive.

I spent a month in Italy recently and biked just over 2000km in a little over a month which is less than that. The climbs there are BRUTAL, like many miles of double digit climbs like even 16, 18% or more. It's so beautiful I couldn't resist. With every ride I felt a little worse and not recovered I knew I was doing myself in. With the Italian diet I was eating top notch and on vacation I was trying to sleep as much as possible. 2 weeks after the fact and back home I am still not myself. This is definitely overtraining, but I Wasn't trying to train to get faster, I was just riding with "IT SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN" on my mind wanting to experience the scenery, food and countryside there as much as possible before going home. Ouch.

Last year I took a one week vacation ... so ... 2 weekends and 9 days to be on the bike. My goal was 1000km in 9 days, but in the end managed to ride only 915.6km. Sat - 170.1km (5h 52m); Sun - 73km (2h 41m); Mon - 83.8km (2h 42m); Tue - 104.1km (3h 37m); Wed - 104.1km (3h 39m); Thur - 100.2km (3h 31m); Fri - 103km (3h 52m); Sat - 95.9km (3h 14m); Sun - 81.4km (2h 57m) My daily fuel for this was... Cheddar cheese, bacon, red paprika, tomato, and either avocado or scrambled eggs. On the ride had some flapjacks with me, energy gel, in one bottle water and in the other carbon drink. After the ride I had some protein drink and to eat either a caesar salad or some pure chicken breast. Additional to the rides I had an hour of cross fit training on 4 of the 9 days, so you can imagine how happy my legs were. It took 5 days for the legs to recover to a point where they felt like a part of my body again. 1000km in 9 days, still a goal.

This reminds me of the Taiwan island roundtrip challenge. It's a 7-12 day bike packing trip, 900-1200km and 6000-9000m accumulated ascending, depending on route choices. Here it's popular not just among routine riders, but regular people too. Some even do it once a year. It can be quite a brutal challenge to those who don't ride bikes regularly, but still they always get it done.

As I have gotten older and have other time commitments I have found that the quality (intensity) of workouts is far more important than quantity (miles). I have simplified my regimen to Hill Repeats every other day and now I am in a constant state of endorphin release, sleeping better than ever (solid 8 hours per night), no injuries, no guilt about missing a workout, no exercise obsession, losing body fat, building muscle, improved muscle tone, much improved endurance, keep out of dangerous car traffic and dangerous group rides, and better mental focus and concentration. This probably would have been better when I was young as well and could have saved me hours and hours of time I could have been doing other things.

I took a week off work last year to ride across Texas (~1000mi or 1600km). I loaded up my gravel rig with full camping gear, water, and food to feed myself along the way. Luckily I only had to camp the first night, but was still stuck with all my gear until I could find a place to ship it home on day 5. I wasn't able to secure I ride home the last day from the the TX/LA border so tried to knock out 150 around Houston to at least make the mileage. I had switched from my gravel rig to my road bike for this day and forgot my flat kit, so... when I flatted I just called in a ride and called it done. Ended up just over 900mi/1460km in 9 days. Also when I am pushing extra in a week, had a 313KM week only 1/2 of your "fun" I am also mixing in a lot of walking, yoga, and staying on hydration with occassional dropping into the ice legs. Thanks for being the human guinea pig again.

Hank, you need to come over to the wonderful world of Randonneuring (or Audax as you Brits call it). Our crown jewel is Paris Brest Paris (1230K in under 90 hours) and its next running is 2023! Prequalification starts next year! Or.... do London Edinburgh London, should you want to stay in the UK.

At 70 years old i was absolutely blown away watching this. But now i just finished "Cycle the Erie Canal" in New York state (Niagara river to Hudson River) and we were doing between 80 & 100 kilometers most every day for 7 days. Yes, its flat, but double "yes" it rained almost constantly 😳 and we were usually on draggy wet cinder trails w rutty slimy mud puddles every 300 feet. 1st 3 days were all headwinds and we didnt hav a house or a decent bed !! Finish the day? now setup yur tent in the rain. 5:00 a.m? pack up yur tent and get pedaling again. After 3rd day u feel pretty good in the morning. 🙂. But i had 310 older riders for company/motivation so i guess thats cheating 🤗🤗 ! Ken on the Hudson River

Back in 1978 I worked in a bike shop in Glendale California and became a Category #1 racer thanks to Mr. Bob Enright who watched me closely during my Cat 4, 3 and 2nd stages. I moved up ranks quickly because before I was a top three 400 cc motorcycle road-racer and knew well how to stay steady in a fast moving pelaton. I was also one of the fastest defenders in So. Cal. At that time I wanted to be in the Tour de France so badly that I had no issues waking up at 4:AM and doing 40K before going to work, and doing another 40K after work, 7 days a week. I loved being a Cat 1 racer, and did most all my stage racing in Mexico. I raced for the City Carson where my coach helped to put the 84 Olympic Velodrome in the city of Carson.

I really enjoyed this one since a few months ago I did a bike packing tour where I did 1100km in 7 days, but there I had the hole day to ride. Respect cramming in thous hours in a normal work day.

My personal additional item 1. Eat something before you get to the climb. Perhaps 5km & 1km before 2. I am fixated by numbers. I watch my heart rate and if it is too high I reduce my effort. I will lose speed initially but find i can regain speed as my body recovers.

1060 km in five days (720 km of which in two days). Did that in a Milan SL recumbent with 15 kilos of luggage crossing Germany from South to North (Munich to Hamburg). Legs were meh, generally very tired. Did another 140 km the next day.

It's tough, I used to work as a bike messenger in Calgary, Canada, I used to ride 50km a day, stop and go, plus 28 km home-downtown-home, plus 80km with friends on the road bike on Saturday. It's very hard on the body and mind to ride everyday continuously.

You will probably get in trouble with time unless you have someone taking care of cooking for you and you have to eat hilarious amounts of stuff to get in the nutrients. It will also be hard on your digestive system.

I did this for 4 days on a heavy packed touring bike. The hardest part for me is a sore ass by far. Pacing is critical if you do it. Sure if you only ride like 20kmh average it takes 5 hours but it also saves your legs.

I did the speed walking version of this. 30k steps per day, around 14 miles a day in about 3.5-4hrs. 210k steps a week, i did it for 2 weeks then my ankle bit the dust! I'm working my way back up again 10k a day. This ordeal with my ankle is why I'm looking into gravel bikes!

There is a guy on Strava who lives in Bangalore India and he has been riding a 100 km on a fixed gear bike every day for the past six months or maybe more. He rides at a very easy pace, but it really is something to just ride this kind of distance for months on end.

Kudos to Hank for this. While the physical effort may be similar to Mark's daily HMs, the time constraints are completely different. I think that alone makes this a much harder challenge.

It looked an enormous effort. More than most (almost any) of us could manage. Imagine, if you had doubled it and done 7 days x 200k @ 40kph avg you'd be a TDF standard rider. What a terrifying thought.

150km per day for 2 months, high geared singlespeed and panniers. No day below 150km since that was my goal, some days longer than that because it was "fun" to bike. At one time I got an inflammation in a knee so I had to bike with one leg.

My tip for the laziest way to complete 100km is to use a busy and flat course on Zwift. Cruise at about 175 to 185w and you will pick up lots of slipstream and complete the 100km in under 3 hours.
