This is a restored version of the famous "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" ad from 1971. Called the "Hilltop" ad at the time, it is recognized as one of the most beloved and well-known commercials in history. The commercial was highly popular and was part of our 1971 "It's the Real Thing" campaign. It has been consistently celebrated as one of the most memorable and iconic spots in advertising history. "I'd Like To Teach the World to Sing, In Perfect Harmony," was later recorded by the New Seekers and released as a single. This link goes to the official history of the making of the ad: www.coca-colaco...

I was around 10 years old when this ad first came out on TV. No matter where you were when this came on everyone would stop to watch it and then smile. I think it's one of the best commercials ever made. I love that Mad Men ended with this.

I don't like it. Co-opting the counter-culture to sell more product. It's cheap and lazy, fitting from such a scummy company as Coca-Cola.

I just finished the Mad Men series and I loved the ending. Realism capitulated in the life of an unhappy man who perhaps can turn it all around. Reminds me of my father whom I love very much and at this moment proud of his sacrifice and hard work. He never did get to enjoy his life but I won't make that same mistake. God Bless you papa.

Regarding Diana...and not to get too New-Age about this (I am so NOT a New-Age type person.) I think the whole Diana thing was that he was both reaching back to capture the past (Diana was a cheap Rachel/Sylvia knock-off) and trying to SAVE another version of himself without doing the tougher work of facing and fixing himself.

100,000 people wrote to coke thanking them for the ad. Think about that. the pop version of the song not only became a hit single, the sheet music was the bestseller of the decade, sung by every chorus in every school in America .. Coke donated all the song profits to UNICEF. This song and ad seems saccharine now but at the time was seen as a healing antidote to the pain left by the 60s. A hopefilled coda to a new age if you will.

An ad similar today could go a long way to healing this country as long as it's kept non partisan and sung by middle America the people who feed the coasts

My mom worked for Pepsi in 1971, where this Coke commercial really blew everybody out of the water. They had study groups on it, and my mom brought home some of the materials including a vinyl record that had a million outtakes from Coke on it as they worked on recording various versions of that song. I had a record collection of three: Elvis, the Beatles and Coke. Played 'em to death. I'd love to buy the world a Coke, this brings back so many fond memories!

It ain't no joke, I'd like to buy the world a toke and teach the world to sing in perfect harmony and teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars. Hey, I know it's just a post, but it's spice for the recipe. This is a love attack, it went out, but it's back. So don't delay. Act now. Supplies are running out. And if you're still alive, 6-8 years to arrive. And if you follow there may be a tomorrow. But if the offer's shunned... You might as well be walkin' on the sun.

The song, written for Coca-Cola by Roger Cook, Roger Greenway, William Backer [representing Coke's ad agency, McCann-Erickson] and Billy Davis, was introduced at the time this commercial first appeared, 'Leonie'- in the summer of 1971...forty years ago. It would cost a fortune to refilm it as a "retromercial" today.

During Passover (Jewish Holiday) you will find a lot of the plastic bottles switch over to cane sugar. They will have different colored caps so you can easily identify them (Yellow Caps) Glass cokes can be bought in the US, although they will still be mage with HFCS. I often grab a few at my local supermarket (McCafferies) before the weekend. Lastly, you can always go for the Mexican cokes. They are in a glass bottle AND use cane sugar, although they are a bit harder to get (in my area at least)
