I actually like this idea. Wear a mockup in normal use for a bit then make the final from those edits. My favorite phrase comes from Adam Savage: Follow the process, not the plan. Even though you planned to do it one way in the morning and it changes, you're following the process.

I love that you include the things that didn't work out well. It's so reassuring to see that in action from more experienced sewists because there are times when I just set the project aside because of one little thing and I never pick it up again because the negative self-talk kicks into high gear. Your corset is beautiful and the right embellishments will find you soon, I'm sure of it :) ♥

I don't mention it much, but I went to fashion school as an adult. Encroaching mental illness makes it so that I never make anything now, but I _love_ watching Morgan. It's like being back in a fashion school class with your favorite teacher. She sprinkles a constant stream of sewing genius advice in everything she does. She's a natural teacher. You can't watch her without becoming better. I had a few great teachers in fashion school, but sadly, many teachers couldn't hold a candle to Morgan. You're quite lucky to have her on here.

The idea of corsets being like makeup, but for your outfits (or for your body) is brilliant.

On laying corset pattern pieces on the fabric, we were taught in sewing school that yes most times it’s better to go just straight grain, but there are instances where in corsets you can play with the grain a little to make the corset fit better, especially if you need very curvy pieces or some funky cuts. The only caviat is that you need to deffinitely know what you’re doing to do ot succesfully.

Thanks for not being perfect and for changing your mind. I thought it was just me being unskilled. You are highly skilled yet run into the same brick walls. It’s not the walls, it’s how you deal with them. ❤️

Here‘s to starting over! I‘m an architecture student and for the past five weeks my design has been rejected by my professors again and again. On this -the sixth- try I feel like it’s finally really good and makes sense and is just altogether better than it’s ever been. It’s been emotionally exhausting but seeing where I am now it’s definetely been worth it.

I fell off the Morgan wagon for idk how long but now I'm back, the almost historically accurate Morgan Donner has been replaces by her punk-light sister and let me tell you, it's wild but I love it!

For fabrics like that silk with the sides different colors, I like the idea of using the other side as contrast details like binding and trims.

I think the corset definitely looks better without lace. It hid the cording which is really pretty

After almost 40 years I have yet to talk to anyone who can "stitch in the ditch" from the right side and have lovely results on the reverse. I have many years of sewing experience and the inside of my work when I use this technique looks exactly like yours, and I agree: "less cute". Invariably I rip it out and hand stitch the free edge on the inside.

The green one was pretty in a only-for-certain-outfits kind of way, which definitely is limiting. Weird slightly sad to see the work undone, but honestly makes perfect sense both to reclaim materials and as the template for the new one, which looks lovely as well, though I'm half convinced the assembly of the panels involved some level of magic.

Love how Morgan mentioned picking apart a favorite stained shirt and using it for a pattern!!!!!! A favorite shirt recently got a unrepairable hole. Several past favorite shirts were tossed but now I can possibly make a new one that is the same cut and have a new favorite shirt. Thanks Morgan for the idea!!!!!!!

it's actually pretty comforting, as someone who's still very much an amateur at sewing, to see someone MUCH more experienced who also still struggles to make topstitching bindings like that look good on the inside. at least nobody else will ever see it! :p

I really thought that this corset had gotten accidentally damaged and thus you had to finally abandon the mock-up to make a new corset, so seeing you tearing it apart in the first few seconds of the video was a shock! A shock I quickly recovered from upon realizing you were taking it apart to make a new pattern

Having just tried on a pair of trousers that were 75% done only to realise the fabric I used was not a good choice for the pattern, I particularly appreciated the lace debacle part of this video. A bit belated, but at 3:30, the phrase "future dark corset" has me wishing that it was foreshadowing for some upcoming project where we get full-on Goth/Punk Morgan, like with the shenani-bondage-pants. Also, that's an amazingly nice seam ripper and I'd love to know where to get one of similar fanciness (or even just, you know, nicer than the regular tiny plastic handled stuff).

In the best possible way, your fashion sense reminds me of a stylish history teacher, or an anthropology professor. Which is totally what I would wear if I had the courage to stand up to my stinky family. "You look so uncomfortable!" Me, dressed in corduroys and a sweater vest over a button-up, chilling on the couch: Nah.

You know you're going to find the pattern you misplaced as soon as you either finish making the second pattern or, when you finish the new corset. I'm currently modifying a pair of commercially made pants and can't find my pattern that fits me perfectly. Grrrrrrr!

Glad you tried the lace to see if it was going to work or not. Plus left the footage of seam ripping while giving your explanation. This really shows not all plans work out as thought out originally. Your corset is beautiful while being undecorated at the top edge, and it lets the silk satin speaks for itself. A very beautiful project.

I love to sew, and I love corsets, but in my mind corset sewing was just way too advanced and not for me to be messing around with lol. i love the corset without the lace, that finish stitching is a work of art!!!! the shimmery fabric just glows, and the top being smooth will look so good under modern clothes...it is beautiful, i hope you don't add any lace to it...the glow of that fabric is the star of the piece. just lovely.

Ooh also, for binding that is super even and strong, the way quilters do it is to sew the binding double layer, and then the folded edge is folded over. You just cut it wider to begin with.

The tip for what to do with the thread at the intersection was SO brilliant! I was stuck with that issue on my first set of stays and just clipped it. I think I'll do the threading it through the boning channel move forever in the future.

Interesting to see you try out the cording! I liked to stop the cording at the edge of the seam allowance to lessen the bulk in the seams. But your technique of folding over the fabric solves that problem!

I agree about the lace. It swamped it a bit. Flossing was the bit I found most difficult by hand. I hand sewed the whole corset and my fingers were shredded by then. And going through 6 layers of fabric...Honestly my hands have never been the same,but I can wrench a jar lid off..no problem!

Tip for getting rid of seam ripping glitter a.k.a all those wee threads messing thing up: Use one of those rolling sticky fluff remover things. Obviously use your judgment in regards to fray-prone fabric edges etc, but a little judiciously applied sticky rolling saves massive amounts of time!

I've taken to using plastic embroidery fabric to trace from, if I don't want to destroy an original. It's stiff, and see-through, so it's quite easy to tack an original to it and trace. Just as a reminder, if you're redrafting a curved seam, a flexicurve ruler is a lifesaver. A cording foot is a very good tool to get the spacing professional. As you say, the coutil base remains flat, so can be cut from the pattern, the top fabric takes the trace. Likewise, a rolled hem foot applying binding avoids the stitch-in. Also, for beginners, use a set of compasses to parallel line, when tracing the grommet fold-backs. The pin side simply follows the line, and the pencil drafts the new parallel. Grommeting several hundred years ago used a buttonhole stitch, which helps the awl hole hold, and in leatherwork we sometimes use the rear washer on both sides of the hole, so the rear of the eyelet part bears on the washer rather than the fabric.

When cutting down synthetic boning I also like heating the ends with a lighter or a candle. The plastic bubbles up just a tiny little bit, And it like makes its own cap which is nice and round and smooth.

I’ve been planning to do this with a shirt for several years. Now that I have more space, it might actually happen. The shirts aren’t stain, torn, or anything like that, but they have worn to the point that the fabric is actually see-through.
