This is my first attempt at making a takedown bow riser. In the process of trying to make this one I destroyed my old one. I had a blast making this bow riser and I got a slightly surprising result! I hope you enjoy!

Bro, I'd like to see that riser cut past center or just enough to give the arrow a true center shot. Also, if you question your limb bolts. Completely drill thru the riser and use bolt and nuts

One thing I've found is if you are shooting for say, two hours or more, a heavier bow makes your shoulder feel like crud the next day. Always a good idea to have at least one lighter bow. Never thought about making a riser before. Selfbows, yes, a riser? Never occurred to me! That was very cool to watch! and it came out looking so nice!

I watched on my phone, and I was walking into the kitchen when you said the line about us "taking too long watching" that segment, and I laughed so hard I ran into the dishwasher door, fell into the island, and then bounced into the fridge, and yet none of that could stop the laughter. I don't know why I found it that funny, but I figured you should know how I ended up literally rolling on the kitchen floor laughing and holding my shin.

Could you pray for me and my family, Kramer? My father died in May last year, very unexpectedly, at 57... I know this seems random to ask of a guy that makes bows on RU-vid, but you seem like such a genuinely nice person that I felt I could ask this of you. I don’t want to worry my wife, or my three small children, or my mother for that matter... but I miss him terribly, and I don’t have anyone to talk to about it. Thanks for your content anyhow, if I had the extra money I’d order a tab or a wallet from you. God bless, and thanks again for your videos!

Hobbies are funny. I was trying to get into archery and bowyery, I bought the Traditional Bowyer's Bible, and signed up for a local flintknapping class and learned how to make arrowheads. Then I was out hunting for knappable rocks to make arrowheads with when I picked up something that I thought was a piece of wood, until I touched it. It looked exactly like wood, but was stone. It was petrified wood. I kept finding more and more of it, and here I am 3 years later with, no joke, around 3,000-3,500 lb of petrified wood. And also chert, jasper, random fossils, amber, other stuff. Yes, it drives my wife crazy. No, I'm not going to stop. I never did end up making a functioning bow.

Very cool video! Your riser looks awesome. A couple of other things about riser geometry determine bow weight as well as length. The limb pocket angle determines how much preload is on the limb, yours look similar or even more deflexed than the 17" riser which makes the draw cycle start softer and works the limb less. Also the throat of your grip looks further forward of the limb pocket pivot point, which accentuates the deflex in the riser. I think it works for these shorter limbs though, it should negate any stacking for you as the limb starts to work later in the draw cycle. Good shooting at the end! Try and remember to bring the arrow to your eye rather than moving your head forward, you can still lean after if you want to cant the bow, but I'd suggest learning to shoot upright first! Check out Tom Clum if you haven't already, man's a legend and awesome teacher. All the best.

Not to shabby!! The reason it dropped #20 is because you didn't account for the Limb Pad angle!! You used the same angle as the shorter riser!! I'm guessing you made a 25" riser? Those limb pads need to be alot shallower to get the effect you were looking for!! On your next one try 10-12degrees on that length of Riser!!

great video,as always I learned something new . You should be good using epoxy on the threaded screw barrel. West Marine says their testing shows that epoxied machine screw threads are the strongest way to attach screws to a composite. Just a thought, have you tried using french curves instead of trying to freehand a curve? Transfer punches are a great way to locate the center of a hole on a surface . Have you tried brad point drill bits? they are great for making very clean holes in wood . Also, the point helps in getting the drill bit on the center of the hole. Just my 2 cents worth.

Nice job, also grab a 60lbs resistance band and use that to train those back muscles. Even though it's 60lbs it doesn't really feel like that much and strain grows the further its stretched just like a bow. I started with a 35lbs draw weight and now that seems easy after intentionally training with a band myself.

Plywood's only strength is on the top and bottom,.....there is no end strength? See if you made the plywood your self with epoxy it would have been a solid piece of wood. Wow,.. 25#@29 that stink's but the riser will probably hold together for that bow. I was going to lengthen mine its 80# @29 well a few over 80 but it's a Bob Morrison custom bow. It's supposed to be so many pounds @26,....but at 29 its about 83# It hits hard its smooth it only shoots wood arrows because it blows the tips out of aluminum arrows. I'd be afraid to hunt Grizzly with it I have always had bad luck shooting it,......I was getting ready to drop the buck and I was tossed 30 feet in the air by a bull,.......then an even bigger buck at 20 yards,...I shot all 6 arrows they hit limbs and landed under him and he just stood there and sniffed them then picked them up and bit them in two. Then kept smelling them,... probably because they were cedar?

Nice experiment about pushing the boundaries for the right reasons. I have 3 sets of ILF limbs with 2 strings I just got from you over the last month. My form was pretty good until the last couple of weeks of weather got crappy. Right now I'm converting an old 19" Custom wood riser into ILF. I have a set of limbs that r about 5 pounds less to buildup until the weather warms & I can switch back & forth until I settle on 1 riser. By the way, your Shatterproof glove is a big improvement to those of us that refuse to use a tab. With the button strap u can get the desired fit even if your fingers feel like they r a small in diameter for the glove. Something about that great design that just works 👍.

Kramer, any thoughts about building riser extensions to accomplish the same goal? You could possibly make 1", 2", and 3" extensions. You would need double hardware to fasten the extension to the riser and then the limb to the extension, other than that do you see any reason this would be unreasonably unsafe?

Since you were using plywood, I fully expected you to use a wood stabilizing resin, (like BVV.) You need to do that for unstable woods like soft woods and plywoods, especially when tapping threads for metal bolts in said woods. These resins require mild heat treating to make them cure. Like your videos a lot. I would never do what you do though. I am too rigid and uneasy... Keep up the good work.

@@kramerammonsarchery The reason I asked is that to me, all the stress on the bolt insert is being placed ACROSS the plys in the plywood. That is the weakest part of any plywood. If the laminates had been run perpendicular to the insert, the insert would of passed through at least one laminate before it hit the plywood. So if the plywood failed THROUGH the plys, (very unlikely), the outer laminate would have supported the treads. This may not matter on a 24 lb bow, but moving up in draw weight, it could cause a problem. But then I may be all wet and being too conservative. I enjoy the channel very much. Keep up the good work.

I recently made a longbow and broke it because I did not tilter the limbs well and converted it into a takedown bow. 9-10 kilos. Thinking to make it more powerfull.
