I Destroyed My New HET Wrecker On This Insane Recovery! 

I do a lot of water recovery here on Galveston Island, just wanted to give you a little bit of advice. Use your boom to break suction not the cables. This will almost always cause severe damage to your equipment the way you pulled on it. I use to apply my recovery skills in Iraq to. I've pulled 80k armored mraps out of mud with a 2 ton C5500 twin line Vulcan. The boom is better for breaking suction all the time. Just food for thought. Love everything you guys do. A trick when rolling something over, especially when it’s lopsided like that old crane: attach the pulling line anchor to the bottom of the vehicle that’s laying on the ground opposite the tow rig, and run it up and over. This wraps the vehicle with the recovery line and rolls it over, keeping the leverage of the tow rig consistent and helps lift the vehicle, using the wreck as it’s own lever. A drawing would help illustrate how it works, but can’t do that here. That’s how I was taught years ago when I pulled my first recovery back on its wheels. Rock on Brothers!!💪💪

That was intense reality. I'm a former trucker and this was a hell of a job. Great work. The average person does not even begin to realize how monumental and dangerous the work is so I hope you get millions of subs. I am so glad no one got hurt on this pull out.

I've been a coded welder(lorries, bridges, tanks etc etc) for over 15 years & I've never seen a Truck bed shear off like that! But that's down to the bolts & that's better than welds braking= it did it's job! Ultra cool!

I participated in many knarly recoveries in Afghanistan with the HEMMT wrecker, an M914 tractor, and a lowboy. My guys had also used the M88 tracked wrecker in Iraq, which I only witnessed in training...what a beast. That HETS wrecker conversion looks mean! I know you're making content, but your safety seems to seriously be lacking at time. Love watching you guys and all the good you're doing, just don't get hurt.

Pretty hard recovery, glad it worked out. Maybe some equipment to make down the road, have a set of 1/4" or 1/2" metal slider pans, just for stuff that could easily slide across dirt, rock, or even as this situation, salt flats. Same design as a set of skis does in the snow, strapped or chained to the wheel or an axle. Would of worked great at 28:15. Way easier to get it back to the road, than putting all that stress on the equipment, while it was digging into the salt bed. Keep up the good work everyone.

I like how this channel is so out of my usual interests, yet I still enjoy watching it. Shows that big, cool machines transcend all arbitrary differences.

A trick I learned is place a burlap sack over joints, if they brake the burlap absorbs part of shock and keeps parts from flying. We used kinetic ropes to pull out combines stuck to axle depths. Just some past experience.

That might be the sickest give away of all time! A custom KW …WITH trailer! Hands down the coolest channel on RU-vid.

So they have wrecker classes in case you wanna learn how to recover stuff. Also when doing a recovery like this, using outriggers is key to keeping your equipment safe

Awesome video as usual. Caught myself saying “whoop” when y’all were driving out and it was getting soft under the tires. Here’s an idea for your next heavy recovery across the lake bed. Grab you a couple of old car hoods and put them under whatever you’re dragging and use them like skids.

I love how you do not whine about stuff you just take care of what needs to be taken care of, love your content.

I love that you make mistakes and admit it. You figure out 'how not to use it' for next time. New equipment, some growing pains, and sometimes under estimating the challenge. But you roll with it and you surmount it anyways. That's what I watch your videos for. It's criminal your not at 5mil subs let a lone 2!

I drove a heavy wrecker for many years. I never did much of a water recovery, although in the small wrecker, I recovered a couple of vehicles from a shallow Lake called Prosser just outside of Truckee. It was a very popular place to try mud bog type action. I also had to recover a big rig in Los Angeles area that had broken through the barrier on a three-level overpass and was dangling cab down held only by the landing gear on the trailer. I had to boom out and lower the cable to the cab of the truck then I climbed down the cable and hooked onto the frame just ahead of the fifth wheel plate. I managed to climb back up the cable with great difficulty, then I threw a rope down to the driver who made a loop and put it around his chest, then I pulled him back up not with my own strength which sadly was not enough, but by tying another winch line to the end of the rope. Kind of a scary recovery but it worked and I managed to pull it back up onto the roadway safely and send him on his way with the load intact, although I never opened the trailer to see the state of the cargo inside, but at least it wasn't the type of accident where everything would have been tipped over on its side or worse blocking the rear doors only to fall out on whoever opened them next!

I so love your Ad reads, they are some of the best on youtube. As for breaking your equipment. What I saw was totally awesome, not that the crane broke but how it broke. It broke in a controlled fashion which is what you need to be safe. We rely on things breaking at controlled points so you do not have excessive forces been placed on complonents. It is like a circuit breaker in your house to cut power. The bolts on the frame gave way first before something else more important.

Makes all our recoveries look simple for my night job running a wheel lift and flat bed for my father in law in ventura, California. The tires on the HET are like the same size on the 200 ton traveling I run at ventura harbor boat yard during my day job. Your videos are awesome man! That ring flying is a perfect example of why "twice the length of (chain, cable, rope)" is the "minimum " safe distance as training goes in recovery schools.

Hello HeavyDSparks, I like your channel on the recovery of heavy equipment. It's something I'd like to do but I can't due to being disabled. Now, I probably could help a little like driving just don't have my CDL.. It would be my second dream come true if I had it because my father drove a semi for over 35 yrs and my youngest brother drives. I've always wanted to drive but I just never tried to get my CDL. I didn't think I was smart enough to get it. Working for you, helping with recoveries and driving be another dream come true. thanks for bringing some attention to the HET. the most important piece of modern military equipment most people have never heard of. The Army runs on the HET, fantastic vehicle.

Man I would love to work for this guy, he seems so laid back, and down to earth. Every day would be a new adventure never knowing what your going to get yourself into. Sadly I've no knowledge of heavy equipment, and am an old timer. Please keep making the videos, I find them highly entertaining.

Wow, I have been a company driver for 21 years and have dreamed of owning my very own truck. I have hauled dry van, refer, pneumatic dry bulk tanker, flatbed, drop deck flatbed, and extendable flatbed trailers. I hope that truck and trailer goes to someone who will fully appreciate it. Airbags might be handy for breaking suction and repositioning wrecks. Maybe a nice sled to drag things onto that will slide easier.

Should do a secondary support vehicle loaded with spare parts, supplies, chain, rope, etc. and pair it with the HET. Throw a winch and outriggers so can double as static point too. Nice recovery

The sheer desire I have to do what you do is unmatched.

Just a thought but if you could drag things that are digging in onto a big piece of thick metal sheet and then drag the machine on a metal sheet would help stop it digging in and would spread out the weight across a much lager footprint. That would then make it much much easier to drag on mud and soft ground. Much love and love the content guys!

For things that are sunken, bring an excavator, and dig around it - The suction can make things crazy stuck !! Frankly, if it was a game, excavators are kinda OP machines. 😄

Fist bump for those of us that remember not to long ago when he hadn't ever tried a kinetic rope and had a "meh" reaction to it. Now he's got his own "meh" rope.

I haven’t read all of the comments so if this has been recommended I’m sorry. I recommend since you do GREAT fabrication make a large trailer just for recovering items from the Great Salt Lake Flats using huge air tires like they use for moving large items on deep snow. I believe that they are like 6 ft X 8ft. If you can make a trailer that can use street tires for the road and then swap the large Aires tires on soft sand/ lake beds it would solve your towing issues and save wear and tear on your equipment. Hope this is worth your time.
