You can really see Linus' morale dive off a cliff when he realizes he's being asked to kludge in a stack of hard drives in the least elegant or aesthetic way possible, and that the person asking him to do it truly isn't bothered.
Loved that part, Linus should see my previous server it was just a motherboard + power suply + hardisks and ssd's on a shelf who needs a case, ran it for 12 years like that :)
I collect vinyl and already know how ungodly expensive that hobby gets.... but this guy also collects Magic: The Gathering cards?!?!?! I mean... I know we all got some form of expendable income, but dmn. This dude must the brokest MF'er on the block... Hey, whatever facilitates that pop of happiness in your life.
if youre just playing casually, it's cheaper and more fun to just print the cards out lol. but some cards you still just have to have...because reasons
@@lukeswan9042 shit man. That sucks. I played for awhile (Scourge - Alara) but I definitely didn't have that kind of money into it. Just recently bought some cards though because I taught my daughter how to play and I spiffed up a couple of my old decks for us.
@@randomz2290 some people don't really care about looking at it all the time as long as it works. people shouldn't put it on carpet for cooling purposes but tbh bro it will be fine people always really over react about having it on the floor or close too as long as there is something under it like a board or anything just to keep it off the carpet you will be fine man definitely.
Because they are grown adults that probably spend most of their time with family / working. When you have responsibilities you tend to care less about a gaming setup as long as it works.
The intel extreme tech upgrade series is one of THE best tech formats on youtube/LTT. I just love it. It shows real and genuine nice people and how they all spend the money on quite different ways. I enjoy seeing their homes and interests. Linus has a great team and the dynamic is so damn funny. Please do many more of these and hire new people to never let it end!
As for the screw driver, I used to work in aerospace and we used to use chromed snap on tools. One day, a flek of chrome broke off and got into some very sensitive equipment. After that, they changed ALL the tooling to mate black. Long story short, if the black finish scratches off, you do not want that anywhere near your electronics.
I love it when linus goes over to someones house, you can see their fear the whole time as linux runs around and starts going through their stuff. Like a bull in a china shop constantly hearing “Careful.. Watch out for.. Dont…” 😂
I lost it when David said "He is jankier than me! How do I learn this power" the way he did. Laughed so much of that. This is my new favorite Intel Extreme Tech Upgrade as of now. :D
What I have found interesting is that people who tend to be like mostly care about things I would deem more important, things like kindness and empathy.
As a homelabber, the harddrive placement in the NAS was painful to see, especially when he had a perfectly fine Define R5/R6, which is a really good server case.
@@PoulWrist also have the meshify c, i removed it because im ssd only and can put 3 fans in the front if i remove the hdd cage. But if you use it as a nas, whole different story
I could never let Linus in my house. It would be panic attack inducing. I own so little and he'd mock it all. Then promptly break something I couldn't replace.
@@5at5una My anxiety is pretty high without something like a video being made. I could have so many uses to better my life with a good pc for work and fun. But I do think I could do it. Especially the mocking as someone who is poor as well.
With how much he pays out on people for even the smallest amount of dirt, I would literally turn my whole house upside down before filming day and clean EVERYTHING. My shit would be cleaner than that Intel microprocessor fab he toured.
I think one of the things I love the most about these intel extreme upgrades is Linus learning and getting angry at his employees for everything about their lives.
lol this isnt his last "end game". i thought my endgame was a 120 dollar base kit, turns out i needed to buy 3 more 500+ boards to find my endgame... and im still not satisfied lol
Biggest lie in the hobby, lmao. Endgame is getting to build keyboards for others and being able to charge enough to make it worth your time. I built some unattainable keyboards (like, literally 5 figures) for free before, there's a few around I'd still build for free, but since people who buy those buy them to flex so they send them to the big streamers I stopped.
as someone who is kinda obsessed with having a clean setup and a tidy room, EVERYTHING about this makes me want to pull out my fingernails with a tweezer
I cannot believe someone can make such a big mess in a single room of that size. It hurts just to look at it, having to be in that place for a few days would turn me insane...
Just a note on the screw driver. Put some "extended" bits with it or a smaller precision screw driver in the set with it. Its very common for some screws to be deep in a hole and having those small bits into hex end wont go in far enough down the hole to extract screw. I see this allot on Laptops, controllers that kinda thing. Sunk in screws suck.
Especially relevant for keyboards. Saw another youtuber who scratched up the anodization on a new board because the bit was too wide for the screw well.
Best part is watching Linus riffle through all this employee's personal stuff totally without boundaries and with no restraint. And then changing how they literally do everything in their setup and the computer activities.
@ 4:26 I have a Jelly Key as well, mine is my tab key. Super neat to see another keeb nerd on the LTT team I've also got a GameBoy keycap as my escape key, with north facing LED's it lights up the screen, so cool.
I think Linus meant like ash residue and discoloration from that. I have my own and the very tip is definitely well blackened by now and scrubbing doesn't make it come off either.
I love how even Linus doesnt want to fit all those hard drives in in a such a jank way. Im with you Linus, I'll do a lot to make things easier but thats a bit too far XD
I also felt a little offended when Linus said his place was filled with "all kinds of weird stuff" and it's literally just a wall of Unstable basic lands. Like wtf those are some of the best best basics in magic.
With how much Nick tinkers with keyboard parts, I wonder what kind of work he could do with arcade stick buttons. There are some that use keyboard switches.
Tbh, for the most part you won't notice the characteristics of the switch. I built my stick with Crown 301/302s? that use keyboard switches. But since the pushbutton itself rubs so much against the housing, you don't get much benefit from lubing or using different switches.
At this point I think that the whole point of labs was to fill it with more employees so that we never run out of Intel tech upgrades I will buy as many screwdrivers as it takes to pay their salaries plz just give me more Intel extreme tech upgrades
I'm looking at these upgrades and thinking... wow, I really should do videos of what I have in my house, as THAT is a) janky and b) fucking kick ass. What these guys are doing is just so mainstream and unoptimized.
One of the best Intel Extreme Tech upgrades ever! I simply love the randomness of it all! And I completely relate to the *coff* *coff* *furball* cat's hair all over the intakes! But... using the server for crypto mining? Is that still a thing after the crash? Or does he just continue to do it for the "nostalgia"?
I have a friend who stopped mining Bitcoin with its brand new ASIC in 2018 when it went from 25k (CAD) to 8k because it was "not profitable anymore". He was kind of mad at himself when it went back to 80k recently. Maybe he continues mining knowing the value may increase in the long run.
@@Seskoi For anyone reading this, if it isn't profitable to mine, but you think the value of whatever is going to go up. It's better to just straight up buy the coin. Not hating on anyone who likes crypto. But it doesn't make sense to mine a coin if your cost of electricity is higher.
@@ivibivivgig6425 I’m still mining ETH with 36 GPUs at home and I’m profitable. $52 per day profit on avg, 2.3 Gigahash total hashrate. until the ETH devs fk us over and switch to PoS (yes proof of stake has the same acronym as piece of sh*t, that’s what it will be at that point) so I don’t think your blanket statement about buying the coin makes sense, those who mined thru the last bear market came out on top because they yield so much more of the coin in downtimes, and that coin multiplies in value like crazy on the next bull run, which will come sometime in late 2024 MAYBE 2023 if we are lucky. I would advise anyone interested in mining to consider getting into it during the bear, hardware is cheaper, everything is just easier because there’s less noise and less distractions. It’s fun! And it’s also how I help support my family. Miners aren’t evil, don’t listen to the bitter RU-vidrs who want to turn tech enthusiasts against one another, we are all the same!
The Meshify 2 Compact comes with a drive cage that can hold 2 hard drives. Since Plouf is a hoarder it's gotta be somewhere in the house. It just might take you a week to find it.
It's crazy that Linus is hell of awesome boss. Normally you wouldn't want your boss knowing how jank you are and yet he just rolls with it and not think twice on why they hired them.
Well Plouffe is a legend, he actually didn’t pay for any of those Magic cards in money, he just gave the store a photo of himself as payment. Chuck Norris tried the same thing one time and was walked out of the store. I know, I was there on both occasions
Ahh yes another keyboard enthusiast with more chassis and switches than one should ever need with copious amounts of desk mats and a stupid number of novelties. I feel a sense of kinship/bad financial decisions.
the community truly shines whenever we realize how financially screwed we are and seek comfort from one another but keep on going anyway because... HEY NEW PRETTY DESKPAD/SWITCHES/KEYCAPS!
@@TR-qf2gt that and the fact when people call us out, we would only say stuff like "Yes I know it was a bad financial decision but I will definitely do it again" xD.
At 24:38 the issue with this argument that I hear all the time (I've been into customs for like 3 years now) is that it's not an equal comparison. The keyboard KIT cost u 200$, add in around 40$ for switches and lube (not to mention the time it takes to lube them), 20$ for a kit of stabs, a random 10$ usb-c cable, keycaps are gonna run you anywhere from 50-100$ and now suddenly your argument of "But it's only 200!! Logitech, Razer, whatever have boards that cost that much!!" well no, because now the keyboard is 300-360$. People who are into customs need to stop with the absolute BAIT of "It's only x" when x is only talking about the cost of the case, pcb, and plate.
While that can be the case for some keyboards, not this one. Zoom65 is a complete package that comes with prelubed switches, stabs, and keycaps. Some keyboards can absolutely be wild in pricing but there is absolutely budget friendly and beginner friendly options out there.
You realize that not every keyboard in the customs hobby has to be some gasket-mount, super flex-cut, CNC aluminum with brass weight artpieces with GMK keycaps + artisans and frankenstein switches right? There's a whole sub-culture in customs that don't mind stuff like tray mount and find boards like the GK61 or Womier K61 that are sub-$100 for pre-assembled kits as budget messiahs, are fine with more budget-centric dye-sub keycaps that are around $30, and pretty much are able to make something great out of basic gateron yellows and the stock stabs with just some extra lube for an extra $10 vial of K205g0 that will last them multiple keyboards. You can buy an SK68 with gateron optical switches, do the bare minimum of lubing the switches and stock stabs (+$10 if you get durocks, ooh so bad) and put in even paper towel into the case as a foam substitute and still have a really great gateway drug into customs for literally sub-$60, where you'll more than likely otherwise find cheapo Reddragon keyboards with Outemu switches or "mechanical feel" keyboards in that price range. Even some of the top creators in the keyboard space admit to the pointlessness of paying excess amounts on those kinds of things, they and the majority of the community know that anything more than the basics is just luxury. In spite of that though, the more we do fund and adapt these upper tier keyboards by dedicated designers with more "luxury" features like mounting styles or profiles, south-facing switches etc, the higher quality we will have at the lower range for similar quality in the future because *somebody* will want to adapt that popularity at a lower cost to open up to a larger audience and rake in more profit than the "end-game" keyboard designers. Just a couple years ago a really good top-tier aluminum TKL with top-mount was several hundreds of dollars, and now you can get a Keychron Q3 which has fair gasket mounting and a really good capability to sound good being a $200 option even during this hell of a recession. You just have to look, and more often than not, not for very long to find something that's great for the price.
Plus he already admitted to one board being roughly $500 and it was missing over half the keys, and having $80 single keys for like spacebar. Like Jesus christ.
Nick is awesome, MTG and custom keyboards? Hell yes! I love the full art John Avon land prints. I cringed so hard when Linus was tossing the Odin up in the air, I know it’s for memes but he has like no respect for the employees property lol, throwing the glass switch containers around, flipping the artisan case upside down causing them all to tumble around, I would never let Linus in my apartment haha

8:12 worlds greatest compressed air tool. I have one too, i've saved dozens of dollars if not hundreds on compressed air cans since buying that thing over 10 years ago.
Me watching Linus poke fun at keyboards: "B-b-but the feel and the looks and the things. My lube and my springs and my Group Buys. You just don't get it man!" *Proceeds to storm into room with multiple $500+ keyboards just to stay in MonkeyType for 7 hours In all seriousness the custom mechanical keyboard hobby is super cool. Some of the most wholesome fun and people I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Really glad to see someone who bought the Kinetic Labs' magnifying glasses 🤣🤣
23:26 Hey, don't diss those that have USB mics. I'm using a Samson Q2U on USB and it works so well. Also not everyone uses OBS either to stream. XSplit is perfectly fine.
I actually love all the hobbies but my god, I'm with Linus when it comes to sticker placement. Stickers aren't my thing but the slightly off-centre lonely stickers are driving me nuts 😂
Best thing about the keyboard hobby is that I spotted his current in use keyboard is the Zoom65 Olivia dark edition. I have the same one beautiful acoustics
