I wouldn’t consider this to be a Black Trail but that is what it was rated so technically I did a Black Trail :)

I don't do actual mountain biking but love the look of these Polygon mountain bikes. I have an old Claud Butler from 20 years ago that is nowhere near as up to the mark, but I have to say those bars look ridiculous to me and somewhat dangerous given their width in such confined spaces. Further to that, I used to do BMX as a kid and I think the stems on all MTBs I have seen look positively puny and under engineered. I take it I am missing something?

Im no mountain bike expert so I can’t really say why they’re this wide. From what I’ve read it’s is because it makes it easier to control and gives you more stability. I went from narrow bars to wide bars and I actually prefer the wider bars now. I will say I do get freaked out when I am going fast and have to squeeze between 2 trees lol.

I also come from the world of bmx. 80's. I'm used to raised seats for wheelies and although I get some of the idea of a narrow bar for freestyle purposes (bar spins and clearance and less mass to spin etc... as far as I'm concerned I like a bar that is about slightly wider than shoulders for the mtb. I like the control..but some of the trails I ride can be narrow between trees..but if you're on wide jump trails and don't need the ability to squeeze between trees. It's basically natural preference. Like if you're doing a bench press of push up. You may want the hands about the same width apart.

Some stems definitely look puny compared to the 80's bike stuff. Maybe it is for weight savings or cost in material?

@@mrupholsteryman I have been watching a few vids on the Polygons which I really like but some of them actually have the front of the stem plate as two separate pieces - so it's two narrow strips jamming the bars on. The suspension must be expected to take a hell of a lot of the force as I have seen lads snap their bars and stems when I was a kid. The likes of those 780mm or even 800mm wide, seem like they would be less responsive and more fatiguing.
