My son was 2.5 years old when the Disney Channel started promoting the Cars trailer. Every single time they showed it, my son would beg me to see it. He didn’t understand time and I would try to tell him that it was 4 months away. He would look at me and ask, how many days is that? 🙄 So finally the day came for the opening of Cars! We went that day- and nine times more in the theaters. Then came the DVD. We wore that DVD out and had to buy another one. My son is 19 now and that’s still his favorite movie!

The actor who did the voice of Mack, John Ratzenburger, had provided a voice in just about every Pixar feature film at this point. They made light of that during the closing credits, when they showed clips of "car" versions of Pixar films at the Radiator Springs drive-in movie. After the last one, Mack said, "Hey wait a minute! All they're doing is using the same actor. What kind of a cut rate production is this?" Nice that Ratzenburger is able to laugh at himself.

This was the last ever movie for Paul Newman (Doc Hudson). He died of cancer in 2008. Paul Newman has done a lot of great movies. Two examples include THE STING and BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, both directed by George Roy Hill and starring Newman and Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce in the MCU). Fun fact: William Goldman (the novelist and screenwriter for THE PRINCESS BRIDE) won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for BUTCH CASSIDY.

He also took his family on a trip through Route 66 because he was so busy doing Toy Story and A Bug's Life and he jumped him to save Toy Story 2 from being another disaserous sequel not unlike the Disney home media sequels (which Toy Story 2 was gonna be originally until the Disney Executives wanted it to be released in theaters). John's wife Nancy told him that she would support him doing this film but on the condition that he has to take normal working hours and warned him that he might miss out on their kids (consisting of five sons) growing up, so after TS2 was wrapped up, his family traveled through Route 66, which inspired him to do Cars.

I'm a gearhead, a racefan , and I love to drive. In addition to the typical Pixar awesomeness, it made massive nods to US car culture. One of the really amazing things with this movie is the number of real people that are legendary in the car and racing community. Strip Weathers was voiced by 7 time NASCAR champion driver Richard Petty, known to his many fans as The King. His wife, Lynda voiced, well, his wife. Mario Andretti, another racing legend, did a voice cameo as himself, Junior, was voiced by Dale Earnhardt Jr., the son of another NASCAR legend and a driver himself. The Ferrari at the end was voiced by 7 time Formula One champion Michael Shumacher. Paul Newman, in addition to being a renowned actor was also an accomplished racing driver. The two Rust-eze owners were voiced by Tom and Ray Magliozzi. They were a couple of brothers known for their radio talk show Car Talk which aired on NPR between 1977 and 2012. The show discussed car repair, and their on air personas were Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers. This movie is a total geekout for motor buffs! So in other words, yeah I really love this movie!

The story of Radiator Springs is mirrored in real life by the towns along the real Route 66. There was a mini-documentary in the DVD extras about how the Pixar crew visited various towns along 66 and met with people in the towns and heard their stories about the decline of their communities after the American Insterstate bypassed them. It was really sad.

One great thing about Pixar is that they are willing to cast non-actors if the voice is right. Case in point, Lassiter hired Michael Walace for his expertise on Route 66 (the primary animators and directors were taken on a road trip by Wallis). They liked his voice so much they created the character of the Sheriff, and he provided the voice. The King was played by Richard Petty - and if anyone was the King of NASCAR racing, he was it!

The car number 43 nicknamed " The King" is a tribute to Richard Petty ( known as "the King" ) who drove a blue "SuperBird" looking exactly like this one with 43 on the side. The other car with the 3 on the side and the thick mustache goes to Dale Earnhardt ( big dark mustache) known for playing a little dirty with his "accidental " bumping in his racing.

I traveled on Route 66 in the Summer of 2021. There was a man who decided to revive the route. Help front money to restore a bunch of sites along the way. They even have a stamp book you can buy to get the famous locations along the route marker and stamped. I saw so many painted murals along the way of “Cars” on the side of buildings as part of the thank you to this homage they made in this film. Sadly, it’s still not very busy. I went through long stretches where we didn’t pass a car. It’s the coolest car ride in America honestly. It makes you feel as if you’re back in the 1950s or 1960s… I even saw an old malt shop (shut down) where they had an old Betty Boop waitress statue inside. You could walk around. It half albums on the wall and old fashioned cars parked outside. It made me wonder what that shop was like back in the 1960s… probably booming with customers, listening to Elvis, drinking malts, shiny cars… I even went to the town Seligman, Arizona. (That’s the town Radiator Springs is based on). Thanks for watching this film, it brought back so many nostalgia memories for me. :)

The part about the Hudson Hornet is very much based in real NASCAR history down to the racing decals. The real Hornet's were the NASCAR champions from 1951 to 1954, but the reason they stopped racing was different. Sadly Hudson had to merge with another company to survive, the racing program was scrapped and a few years later the Hudson brand was dissolved.

Pixar could do no wrong 1995 - 2010. Toys, fish, cars, grumpy old men, superheroes, rats, robots, it didn't matter - they knew how to prioritize a compelling story even while pushing CGI to new levels of sophistication. The creative output from Pixar was, as Steve Jobs might put it, insanely great. Trivia - Paul Newman as Doc Hudson was a great fit - not just a great actor but a professional race car driver and team owner from age 47 to age 72(!) and is in the SCCA Hall of Fame.

I also love road trips. I like "Larry the cable guy" voicing "Matter". Larry is a funny guy. The type of car that they used a the flying bugs are known here in the U.S. as Volkswagen bugs. They've had that name long before this movie ever came out. lol

Most of the cars you see are actually based off real ppl and cars. Like the Fabulous Hudson Hornet was real and was a real race car that did the things Doc did like the crash and wins. It was the beginning of NASCAR. Plus at the end the car that said "thanks King you were always an inspiration to me" and the king says, "Thanks Junior" that car is Dale Earnhart Junior. I love this movie so much so much as a spin southern man that grew up with Dale Jr and his father. This movie has always meant alot to me I'm glad you enjoyed it ❤

A lot of people seem to hate on Cars for some reason, but for me It's up there as one of my favorite Pixar movies. (and that's saying something when they've got amazing films like Up, Wall-E and the Toy Stories) It's just so charming and has so much heart to it. It looks absolutely stunning (that scene where they're all driving through town at night and all the lights are reflecting off their paint in particular is incredible), its got some great humour in it, a great cast and I love some of the cameos, like Mario Andretti, Micheal Schumacher Ferrari and Jeremy Clarkson. You can really tell the people who made it truly had a love for cars, racing, and Route 66

I love this movie, it literally raised me as a kid, the score, the soundtrack, the badass moments, the wholesome moments. Just makes you feel good. I watched this whole thing, it was awesome seeing someone else react to it for the first time. You reacted super good, paid real attention to all the little details that I didn’t even notice on the first few watches. Loved it

The REAL Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway races in NASCAR are 500 laps. Those two tracks are only about half a mile though. They also had several NASCAR drivers and legends provide voice-overs in this movie.

As someone who lives in the southwest USA and have traveled roads that look very much like the roads in this movie (bother interstate and rural Route 66 roads through small towns), this movie captures that feeling quite well. Back when the big highways were built, they really did kill off a lot of small towns, sadly. Some are still there, but very much a shadow of what they once were. Mary if you ever get a chance to travel to the US, put it on your bucket list to drive through the Southwest. There are some spectacular parts of the country!

Im from Albuquerque NM and the route 66 runs through my State, and this movie honestly really hits me because the small towns I know and took for granted when i was young... Are now very much like Radiator Springs. Towns bypassed to save time driving for the big Highways. But the small towns have people and families who have been around since BEFORE New Mexico was even a State, even longer before when the US was a proper country! So much history that i love is reflected in this movie, and how quick industrialization can be a bad thing in the name of the "greater good".

There is so much you can unpack here. First yes real racing is very difficult and to an extent Doc is right you go hard enough in a corner you find your self turning the other way though its slower... As said this was Paul Newmans last role and very fitting as he was a very accomplished racecar driver himself racing sports cars for many years. And co owner of Newman Haas indycar too.

The terrain around Radiator Springs is patterned after the red sandstone cliffs between Thoreau and Gallup, New Mexico when you travel along Interstate Highway #40.

I like Sally's explanation of what happen to Radiator Springs. Unfortunately, with the build of the interstate highway system, things like what happened to Radiator Springs really has happened to so many small towns across the U.S. I also love to just go out for a drive every so often and not have a destination but just go out and see where the road takes you. I love what Sally said "Cars didn't drive to make great time, they drove to have a great time". The "Old Route 66" road is also known at the "Mother Road" because it was the first cross country road that was ever built here in the U.S. (back before the Interstate highway system) that linked the Eastern U.S. to the Western U.S. the Road started in Chicago, Illinois and Ended in Los Angeles, California

There were many towns like Radiator Springs which turned into ghost towns when the freeways came through. The major reason for them was national security. If equipment or personnel needed to travel cross country in a national emergency they needed to make it in as quick a time as possible. In 1919 President Eisenhower (while he was a brevet lieutenant colonel was part of a miliary exercise called the Motor Transport Convoy. It took 62 days to travel 3200 miles (5100 km).

The success of this film owes itself to so many resources. From the amazing work of PIXAR, to the simple story allowing real character building, and a history of NASCAR to build from to make many Easter egg references. At the end when The King is wrecked, that scene was copied from the real one Richard Petty experienced and is my favorite nod to the source material. I bought and sent a copy of this to my Step-Dad on Father's Day shortly after released: He is a fan and brought me up to speed on the sport, and it's many points of history so I could better understand what I was looking at beyond 'roundy-round'. He very much enjoyed it.
