As a wrestling fan this is such an amazing interview to see. Kenny bringing "nerd culture" and video game culture into the arena of pro wrestling is amazing. It's amazing to have such a celebrity talking up fighting games and the FGC.

Kenny's feud with Woods is what got me to start playing fighting games. Super excited to hear how he got into it.

I am a massive fan of Kenny's in ring work. His run in NJPW and now with AEW made me go to my first ever wrestling show. It is so cool to see him immerse himself in the FGC as well, hope he continues to do so in SF6.

I was introduced to Kenny "by God" Omega through Excellent Adventures. Such a great time that was!

I remember learning that Kenny liked Street Fighter and it made me feel the whole scene was being elevated.

I love how the FGC manage to take Entertainment Wrestling gimmicks to their own culture, and with Kenny Omega and Xavier Woods we see the othery way around... In a way, FGC and Wrestling (as entertainment and spectacle) kinda feeds off of each other, and that's a beautiful thing!

Great interview. Was a wrestling fan as a kid. Fell off of it and probably fell into the crowd that looked down on it for a while but eventually seeing it on TV again and seeing that it’s lasted this long with the fandom, it was a cool thing to see. One thing I’ve grown to really love is seeing people do or watch things they love. Like people genuinely enjoying their game. That’s why I tend to not talk shit about things I don’t understand. Becomes somebody understands it and somebody enjoys it for whatever reason even if I don’t. And that is enough to make me enjoy it and get invested in the storyline. That’s why I will watch every game at Evo or any major event because it’s always hype to see people get hype about their game

There's a huge amount of overlap between the spirit of professional wrestling a.k.a. sports entertainment and the fighting game community tournament scene. It is very personality and character driven on the one hand while also of course technical and ability critical on the other. At least, as far as spectatorship goes. You get invested in the contenders that are competent and engaging.

I wish we could get a follow up to this interview now that it’s been a full year.

Love Kenny omega, never seen a damn match of his but the fact he is a famous WWE wrestler and yet is “just a guy who likes fighting games” goes to the heart of fighting games imo. Anyone can enjoy them, anyone can understand them, and anyone can meet anybody by sharing an interest in this universal pastime.

14:07 I used to be friends with Smug, and I know for sure, because I helped him do it, that his combo videos are FAKE. We'd sit there for hours in casual matches letting him practice super hard combos, pretending like it was in a real match. If he couldn't get the combo one round he'd have me kill him or do some damage so there would be a won round by me or at least not multiple perfects on the scoreboard. So it looked more real to viewers. Go watch his combo video, he is playing against a lot of the same people and in some cases against his own accounts. Look at the names. Not that smug wasn't amazing, but his combo video is fake. Any time he killed someone with a rose it was definitely fake too. We calculate the damage he'd have to do to end up at 1 hp after a certain combo so he could kill with a rose.

Omega seems like the kind of guy who gets ulzers from gaming. Just my take after watching this. He seems stressed and out of place.
