Re: art supply shopping while traveling ... I do the same thing! I often make very special purchases or discover favorites I otherwise might not have ... my first Senneliers were purchased in France (began my love affair with their French Vermillion which has been in a palette for me ever since) ... as well as an Isabey mop (purchased at Magasin Sennelier by the Seine!). I've bought LAMY pens in Germany. I've bought Fabriano paper in Italy. Recently in Mexico I found a dusty art shop in Oaxaca and got a block of rough watercolor paper they had. It was cellulose but actually painted quite well. I think they are incredible souvenirs and keep the trip alive every time you use them afterwards.

Very professionally made documentary and well narrated. You shouldn't have been shy about your art with that artist, it's vibrant and full of life.

Thanks so much for sharing your trip! Your sister is a fantastic videographer/travel companion! (Loved it when she was directing you 😅.) Such a beautiful area, it makes me want to visit Nice and the surrounding area (and art stores). Good for you for eating what you like/want on vacation; I tend to do the same when I know what I’ll prefer. I always try to have a nice breakfast on vacation and I love checking out bakeries and spots for a “fancy” dessert when we’re away. (I also like checking out a local grocery store to see how different it is 😊.) Nice art retreat 😊

An ideal art retreat would be somewhere easy to get to, with beautiful views, but not a ton of crowds. I don’t mind people being around but I don’t want to be shoulder to shoulder with strangers the entire trip 😅

Lucky you! We spent 4 days in Nice last July! Watching this video reminded me how beautiful this place is! After Nice we visited Genova and Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre would be a great art retreat!

Oh dear... what a beautiful video. I feel so inspired, and loningly to be there. And a bit sad of completly not beeing a spontanious person. For me everything has to be planed. I'm happy for you, that you had such a wonderful trip. Such a beautiful place. I don't know how you are able to sit there and see a place. I mean "seeing" it an be able to make something like a frame to decide what to capture. I see 360 degree and don't know what to do with it. How to start and how to skip details. You have done it in a great way. The video is full of stunning views and pictures. If it's ok, I will take one out of it and take if for reference. Sooo inspiring. The music with the guitars and the beautiful landscape was perfekt. I loved this one very, very much. Made me feel lots of things. Thank you.

Thank you sooo much Alex! It is truly a video I hold dear to my heart and I am so glad that it has inspired you - as that was my aim. Please feel free to use it as a source of inspiration / reference :D It is why I included so much! If you do recreate something, I'd love it if you could share it and tag me on instagram or discord as I'd love to see it - but no pressure. Knowing that it has been helpful is joy enough. Like most things, figuring out what to "see" what to use, and what to leave, comes with practising it a few times - but in honesty, I just usually go for whatever captures my attention most or whatever feels most significant for me in that place at that time. If I went to the same place twice, I am sure everything I would choose would be different - but that is okay. The hardest bit for me was initially picking something, the moment I accepted it didn't truly matter, is the moment I started enjoying it more :P x x

Nice art retreat. Your paintings were wonderful. I recently went to Paris and went to the Sennelier Shop near Musee Dorsay. Minnd you I'm a 52 year old rural American who has only been there and London two years ago. ,. So it was a fantastic art retreat for me. I painted, urban sketched, and went to a life drawing session. I hope you have many more adventures. I enjoy watching them.

It looks beautiful and I can see why you would want to take an art holiday there. 🙂 Seeing these art stores reminds me of my favorite one in my home town. It was a family owned business that had been there for 50 years, but the owners decided to retire so they closed the shop. Perhaps someday I will see lovely stores like these again.

You like to tour the way I like to tour. I like to walk about and see what shows up. So many wonderful discoveries you might not find otherwise. And yes, always on the lookout for art stores. Hoping to find one or two in an upcoming trip to Vancouver and Alaska.😊 Your Castle Hill climb reminded me of the 435 (about) steps hubby and I climbed in a tower in Sienna, Italy. Pant, pant... You've made me want to go to Nice. Nice art retreat!

Amazing! Nice art retreat! So enjoyable; what an incredible opportunity to spend 3 days there on a whim, relax, eat, shop, laugh, and paint! I too, love this kind of travel. Have a destination in mind, a home base in a central location, a few landmarks to see during the trip but spend most of the time just enjoying what's around me! I am interested in what your bag is to bring all those supplies. I end up bringing a variety of travel palettes, sketcbooks, travel brushes, pencils, and eraser. Now I'll probably include some Neocolor II and pitt pens after seeing your travel kit. I now HAVE to find the art stores wherever i am now! FUN. More travel videos with you and your sister. I understand your need to paint that hill even if she didn't haaa. I'd like to do this in Spain and/or Italy!

We’re doing a European tour in the summer by motorbike, so my sketching kit will need to be very minimal! I’ll have to check if any of the places we’re going have art shops. In terms of a mini art retreat, Valencia has some very interesting architecture, both older and modern, plenty of green space, next to the coast and has a fab market! Nice looks lovely, thanks to you and your sister for sharing!

I love to travel but love to plan. Your band sketch is joyful. What a great memory. I have yet to take an art trip. I'm at the beginning of my journey and find you and your work so inspirational. Nice art retreat. I love Nice but I am still intimidated by the idea of creating an art retreat for myself. I am currently in Mexico for one week. I brought watercolors and some neocolors and a brand new sketchbook with the plan of for the first time documenting my trip with sketches...lots of photos that "would make a great sketch" but no sketches yet. I admire when you sketched in the park. I think first I need to get over my fear of "ruining" my sketchbook with a less than perfect painting. As you said, the act of painting during my trip will itself be a special memory regardless of the quality of the painting I produce. omg last year when my parents went to monaco they went to that perfumerie and did the thing where they got to create their own perfumes and brought them back for me and god i would love to do it myself!!! i'm so jealous you went there and saw the factory 🙀 nice art retreat -- and nice and monaco are now at the top of my list of places to go to paint oh my god the colors!!!!! the ocean and the plants and the buildings!!!! i would die

YESSSSSS!! NICKEL AZO YELLOW!!! The quin golds I love are PY150 and PO48 so I have Nickel Azo Yellow in every brand that makes it with PY150! And I also have stocked up on Quin Burnt Orange (Daniel Smith) and Quin Rust (M Graham) So can mix my own Quin Gold in the percentages of each pigment that I like. Quin Gold is literally the color of light, everyone always asks me how I can get it to look like there's actual light radiating off the page and all I tell them is "It's not me, it's just the paint"🤣🤣 Edit: Oops1 I forgot to add the "Nice Art Trip" at the end!

Woah, such a spontaneous trip! Having to pack in such a short time would probably stress me out lots 😅 You bought a lot of pencils along! And your sister is a good stalker :P I see lots of supplies that i’ve never seen before… It’s so interesting that they sold the half pans naked like that! What a Nice art retreat and I love the jibes with your sis! It’s clear how close you two are! 😂 That very last sentence 😂😂😂. Putting that in was the absolute right choice, I had such a great laugh!

you found some lovely scenery to paint! i am all for leisurely travelling, taking in the sites and colours but Nice has also some cool, inspiring art museums. i'll be going to Bilbao in a few months and though i'm going to just enjoy the trip and not rush around looking for touristy sites i wouldn't miss the Guggenheim. i think one can combine the two. in Nice my personal favourite is the Chagall museum. he's use of colour is so breathtaking.

A nice art retreat! I couldn't cope without a long in advance plan! It is of course a lot more planning from Australia - so good to be able to hop across the channel to Europe! I think it would have been too hot for me there. I am going to an art retreat on Iona in a couple of weeks - I hope to be as inspired as you were :)

I'd love to do the same! And your video travelogue is so good. I love the sketches, and I agree outdoor painting is wonderful. I've just come off a one week tour in Italy. Not a long time to sketch but what I did, I love and, like you say, they bring back the memories. I'm in northern England, so Nice is a trek, but Amsterdam is just a 1/2 hour flying time for me. You've given me the idea! You might look at Pisa, Italy (direct flights from London, and a quick train ride to Florence, cheaper to stay) for another quick sketching holiday. It's very easy to get around and there's so much to see in both places, very picturesque. And delicious food!! I'll keep watching to see where you go next! And subscribing. You’ll laugh when I say my favourite place for doing that: your own beautiful London! Best Western is a chain of motels and hotels all over the world so like McDonald’s is a franchise except the individual motel or hotel has their own name. When you go there you just Byatt under the franchise name. It’s one you can become a member of that, then you get deals for When you go away. We even have them here in Australia. Absolutely beautiful footage. Thank you so much for sharing.

Now that’s the way to do things. Ooooooooh sunshine……😮 When I lived in Kuwait I used to do spontaneous flights to places for a couple of days and then night flight back and from the airport back to work ( teacher). Love the bloopers. It’s a shame you couldn’t get that chair/bag. Nice art retreat.

I love the idea of a grab and go bag, I’ve been trying to curate two this past year. A small back pack ready to go for either studio work or urban sketching. Just essential kits so I’m ready at any point to go make art x

Nice art retreat .Really enjoying your channel and this last minute trip looks superb. Love the art supplies. Very curious how you use the crayons. Maybe they’re not crayons, photographer here and new to these mediums. Just started water colours and sketching.

Thanks for watching and your kind words Colin! They are crayons that can be dissolved with water or left as is with their crayon like texture. They are called Neocolor 2. (There are Neocolor 1 that have the same colours but don't dissolve with water). I usually use them on top of my art work for extra pops of colour - I show close ups of what I mean in this video (at 12:16 - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6UtoenTj9LE.htmlsi=XpEaknT7XSA2gFC8&t=737 ). I just think they can be a fun way of adding texture / colour / interest but they can be used in lots of ways. There are a few more pieces with them in that sketchbook tour. I hope this helps! I think Charvin are more known for their oil colours. I had a hard time finding watercolour information or reviews of them so I gave up.

There wasn't much online for me either, or in the shop to be honest! I am yet to use them as it has been super busy at work, but I will share my impression when I do. Most obvious is that there is no pigment information or wrapping or information in general lol, and they are quite expensive. Were it not for the sentiment of them being from France while I was in France, I don't think I would have bought them lol I've shifted from buying souvenirs while away, and now buy art supplies lol x x

@@SketchesnScrubs sensible idea. Souvenirs just tend to gather dust unless they're practical. And it’s often cheaper to buy French products like Sennelier more cheaply in France than in Australia. Although it may not be such a big price difference between the UK and Europe. I'd have certainly come home with Sennelier products from Nice if it had been me. And some Charvin oils to try. I got the feeling from the bit of information I found about Charvin, they didn’t put too much effort into their watercolours as they really concentrate on showcasing their oils. I also have a feeling it may have been Charvin water colours that were rebranded and sold under a fashion label name with an eyewatering price. I’ll have to go and have a sticky.

Hi. I was already planning a trip to the south of France at the end of June. I am dying to know what you think of the Chavin watercolors because I am toying with the idea of buying a set as a useful souvenir and only bring a very small back up set of watercolors with me.
