I Didn't Paint This Dresser!

Every now and then, this hardcore furniture PAINTER puts the paint aside and restores a piece. This stunning mahogany dresser was pretty perfect as it was and just needed a slight fix to the top and drawer fronts. Not so much of a flip as a restoration.

Thank you!!! My girlfriend has been trying to convince me to ditch my 1930s veneer mahogany buffet and China cabinet that are in pristine condition. She told me at the very least you should paint it with chalk paint. I am so glad you saw the value in this piece! It helps me commit to the pieces that I've inherited. I will continue to mix them in with a few contemporary pieces and artwork, but I am not getting rid of them. I will continue to mix them in with a few contemporary pieces and artwork, but I am not getting rid of them to buy a cheap substitute, or painting them something trending.

That mix of antique furniture with modern art and decor is SUPER on trend right now! If you want to paint, paint. But if you don’t, there’s no pressure ❤️ whatever makes you feel happy in your space is the right choice.

Oiy!!! Chalk paint? On your 1930s piece? That would be a recognizable regret the moment the first coat of that was brushed on. Even she would see it. The recovery time might last longer than your relationship. 😯 Continue to integrate your inherited treasures with things that you love to make your home fabulous! The style is eclectic and as long as you don't overcrowd things, it will be unique and wonderful!!! 😀 Hubby and I inherited pieces from the 1800s to mid-century modern. Plus, the pieces that he built himself, when we got married in the 90s (beautiful wood, simple). I do the art. It works.

Red Mahogany is fantastic! Bought a piano that had been refinished with it back in the 90s and have loved it ever since. It's not really as red as it appears here when wet, a very neutral colour that would suit any kind of decor.

I feel like I say this on most of your videos but THANK YOU for being respectful of the work that originally went into these furniture pieces. People don't realize that many of the UNPAINTED originals can't be recreated now because of craftsmanship and because the material (woods) simply aren't available anymore. If I had had to watch you paint burlwood I may have wept. I love that you not only respect the piece and its history but also educate others to do so as well. Funny not funny story... My father had a large collection of burlwood stored in our woodshed for a number of years with the intent to do the wood finishes in our home custom... His evil horrific gf one day weirdly decided to be "helpful" and cut the firewood that he "never seemed to get around to chopping" and chopped the entire pile into chunks. 😳☹️
@2Cambell

YES!!! This is beautiful! I do like wood, often, it's a travesty to cover up beautiful pieces with paint. I also love the burl... Yep, keep saving the paint for the pieces that could only improve with covering them up.

I have a similar dresser that I've had for maybe 50 years and it was considered old when I bought it at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop in Boston for probably $20. I tried to get a lower price ($20 was a lot then at a thrift store) but I knew it was a quality piece when I saw the joint construction. It's also missing the original mirror so it has 2 small holes, but that never bothered me. It's 50" wide with three drawers on the top then two full width drawers (no burl). The top three have brass knobs; the bottom 2 have pulls. The brass is very subtle as it's very tarnished. Even the insides of the drawers are beautifully finished. At some point I stripped some of the varnish off the face of the drawers giving them a slightly lighter and flatter look. I have dragged this bureau around on many moves, but it has certainly held up. Wouldn't dream of painting it.

There's no way we can miss your point. It's like trying to put makeup on a naturally beautiful face.....it would end up looking like a clown. One objection, though. I can't help but feel that it could have done with different hardware. 💝

It IS a masterpiece! Just for reference, I had a very similar set - armoire, 3-drawer chest, and vanity - and the pulls were solid brass teardrop. It was my own bedroom set bought straight from a shipping container from England. I didn’t refinish furniture then. I could never get the burl wood conditioned well enough. It was like a sponge!
