We all love to send it big, and heck, I’ve nearly made a career for myself doing so, but we also need to be realistic about when it makes sense to take a big risk. If you find an obstacle that you don’t understand exactly how to ride, it’s a sign that you’re on the verge of getting hurt.
I had to swallow my pride and take a chill pill on this drop. I thought I’d really regret that, but as I sit here recovering from a recent concussion and separated shoulder, I’m pretty OK with walking this one. This day in Utah, I was tired after 3 days of riding and coaching. I hadn’t hit many Utah style drops like that on the new bike and fork. And I was in a bit of a rush to both beat the rain and catch a flight home that afternoon.
While editing this, I stumbled across a shot of local pro, and Redbull Rampage podium finisher, Logan Binggeli. Logan is riding the trail- and sure enough, he kept his wheels on the ground down the drop that I skipped. See that video here: • Extreme Freeride - Fly... Had I known that is the right way to ride that, well, I’d probably have done it! But I’m glad to have avoided the repercussions of not being truly prepared. And now that I know how to ride that line- I’ll be back!

Ditto Jeff, stay healthy. I remember meeting you the first time at Dirt camp in Tahoe more than 20 years ago...you were riding your hardtail green steel Bontrager with a 1" threaded Rockshox and you were airing out gaps, hitting drops, and riding trials style over boulders and picnic tables...then at Cal Poly I think the consensus was if there was a gap and you had a wheel you could clear it. At this point you don't have anything to prove but to ride for your own enjoyment and to stay healthy to be present for your wife and daughter. Glad you are able to do coaching camps hope to catch one with you some day.

Great example!! I'm still learning and now I'm showing some of my friends who have seen how much fun I'm having and want to try MTB. I stick to 3 Rules: 1. Have fun. - We are riding bikes after all 2. Be safe. - No shame in walking trails and features. No shame in walking away, bypassing, or leaving something for another day. 3. Learn from your mistakes. - You're gonna mess up, fall, maybe even crash. It's ok. Learn from what you didn't do properly and you can conquer another day. Thanks for all the awesome content and your enthusiasm in your riding Jeff!

Dude, I feel you. Good choice. I recently turned 30, and from a few injuries over the last few years, I know that already I don't heal nearly as quickly as I used to when I was like 20. A bit more caution translates to longevity in the sport! I'd rather be riding in my 60s and 70s than semding huges gaps and drops now.

Thank you Jeff for making this vid. At almost 50 now, and with lots of injuries over a lifetime so far well spent, I’ve (finally) gotten to that point where I won’t send it if I’m not feeling it for whatever reason. But I see so many people crash because they don’t do this. I don’t think RU-vid helps people with knowing when to send it and when not to because, especially with edited vids, all we see is the attempt where the feature is cleared, and often the vids are pasted together in such a way that it looks like all riders just hit all the features as they’re riding, without ever walking them first. I get that it makes for a more interesting vid, but I think it can also create a warped perspective for some viewers who don’t realize that the vids are cut and paste jobs that don’t show the failed attempts and walk throughs, and then go try to emulate the vid they watched, often with a much lesser skill set than the RU-vidr. And then the inevitable crash happens. So seeing someone who is as awesome as you are on a bike walk some features first on an unknown trail and even decide not to do a feature is very healthy for the viewing audience. 🤙

No shame in passing on something. I'm 40yrs old and send it whenever I feel comfortable. If I'm not feeling it I pass...live to ride another day mentality. Just heard a story about a 20 + year rider who over sent a jump ,hit a tree and ended up in ICU with cracked skull, 5 broken vertebrae, and punctured lungs. My guess is dude will never ride again. Thanks for this vid. It's pretty cool to see you both humble enough and confident enough to post a vid of you opting out of a feature and taking the safer route. I started mountain biking at 38. 42 now. I was a competitive snowboarder in my younger years and did a lot of dirt bike riding and a little racing when I was young. Broke my back in HS, dislocated both shoulders, tore my MCL, broke ribs etc etc you know the drill. But even at this age, with a wife and kids, it's hard to find that balance between pushing limits in order to improve, and going home safe to the fam. When you're used to being the one who always "sends it" it's hard to let that go. I'm not a shredder on the MTB (yet) but I still have that conversation with myself on the regular. Cool to see a badass rider like yourself have it too. Cheers.

To keep your goggles clear at all times, I really suggest using an anti fog spray. I use one made by Bosch in Germany on my clear face mask and it is totally clear or any fog. Without it, the thing is just dripping with condensation inside. But you may need to look for a different brand in the US.

As a 56yo guy that's only recently got into mtb'ing, I am excited and shit scared at the same time at the prospect at doing trails like this one day. Although I've been riding placid casual trails for a few years, I'm just starting to try jumps and drops (as per my latest video) and I hate the feeling of not having the guts to send it on things that I reckon I should be able to do. Crazy good riding as always! That has to be the quietest dirt I've ever heard. Question - Those slow speed, almost standing still drops....how do you do that?!?! I am a novice rider trying to figure out drops, and I see better riders hitting drops at super slow speeds, and I just can't figure that out. I try it off of small things, such as curbs on sidewalks and such, but I can't seem to get it unless I have some speed.

honestly might be due to his wheelie/manual experience. If you watch his videos that's one of the things he does really well. Being able to control that front wheel until the back tire drops means he is able to control more how he lands by the time he hits the bottom.

FIrst off...love the chinbar cam. Best view. (Yes...saying it again! Would love to see you get the Kali Invader and wear it all the time so we got such great views vs a gimbal. I digress...). Second, you have nothing to prove to anyone, and no one questions your skills. In fact, what makes watching you ride so much fun is how you take a normal every day trail, and find ways to make it more fun to ride than it would be otherwise. That's my favorite thing about your videos. What woke me up was riding "Boneyard" in Bentonville. I worked up to that and finally got the courage to send it. I was confident, but still nervous about the consequences. After I finished the line, I felt complete relief that I checked it off my list, and didn't feel a burning desire to do it again. In the meantime, the younger kids couldn't push their bikes up the hill fast enough to go ride it again. That's when it sunk in that I'm 51, and I don't have to go hit the biggest feature that they've built anymore. I'll leave that up to the whippersnappers, and stick to the medium size stuff and look for fun things to spice up my trail rides!

I typed this before the end and before seeing the drone footage. I'm 99% sure you meant proper DH BIKE 200mm suspension

Jeff, if you want a good laugh, and haven't seen it yet, go to Ben Deakin's channel and check out his "just roll it" vid. He's riding Kong with Olly Wilkins, Matt Jones, and Brendog. No spoilers, but I've watched it like, 10 times and it has to be one of the funniest vids I've ever seen 🤣

Hawk-Gull 😂 The V2 is so quiet. You sound so soft on landings. Good suspension?

Hahaha yea I dunno what that birdie is! The V2 is quieter for me than the AF. I liked that suspension setup for Utah riding too.

Hahaha Dave is a good dude! He saw us filming in BC and introduced himself- we've been hoping to do a collab ever since! He's more of a trials guy, I'm more of a hucker.
