Durban homelessness is very unique I wouldn't call it poverty because if your born in KZN then you will always have somewhere to go. It's mostly amaPhara who are drug addicts and have burned their bridges with family due to their addiction. I also have a cousin who is a drug addiction and chose to live on the street even though he could stay at many relatives home and we have tried to get him help but he refuses. There are also a lot of foreigners that were trafficked to SA or that were mislead to thinking they could get a better life here.

As a long time resident of Durban, it is sad to see the deterioration of our once beautiful city. The Durban city bowl or CBD has been left to decay and rot and it no longer even a faint representation of what it used to be just 10-20 years ago.

You missed out on a lot more cultural attractions in Durban…PheZulu Kraal for one. Our art centres and early settlers villages, sugar mill history, game drives etc. We have great farmers markets and craft markets as well as “car boot sales” too. You could have visited an Indian market in Chatsworth(an Indian township) as well. Please do visit us again.

When I lived in Durban I was told the homeless prefer Durban because the weather is excellent year round.Durbman beaches also have shark nets!

You were in the Morningside area, you shoulda definitely hit up Florida Rd! you were just wandering up the main roads that's why there wasn't much to see. also to confirm that the city of Durban does have the largest population of Indians outside of India compared to any other city in the world.

Well currently our beaches are full of shit you can't really swim any where with out catching ecoli lol I used to dive for marine speciem for my tank but haven't in awhile , the other day a mate of mine went for a dive and he said there is very very little marine life on the reefs at the moment very sad.

You mentioned the homeless in this clip. I agree with the comment below about those on the street due to drugs BUT it is well known that many of the homeless from Johannesburg migrate to Durban for the winter as our winter is mild. Once winter is over, they go back to Johannesburg.

Plz visit North of Durban you'll enjoy yourself, Florida Road was it especially at night but Mhlanga has it all n you can check out Ballito too. Durban is more hectic in Dece-Jan(1-5)

@@andie3209 really sad, can this useless ANC get anything right. They have messed up everything . Durban was such a beautiful city. As a youngster, still in school I used go in a truck to pick up the Sunday Times and Tribune to deliver all over the South Coast. While waiting for the paper,which comes out at midnight, we used to walk around Smith and West Street to pass the time. From what I hear one can never do that now. I am 22 years in Cape Town now and Cape Town is still great. We have our fair share of problems.

To be honest that bunny chow is like a 5 outta 10. The best bunny chow I've ever had consistently is Hollywood Bets in Springfield Park. Nothing beats a lamb bunny and a tall glass of coke. Just be careful walking around certain streets in the business district as muggers are ever ready to pounce. Same for the alleys and beach front area. I'm born and raised in Durban, its a great city, but like even New York..it has its dark side..

If you can, go to the Umgeni Bird Park - you'll see some wonderful birds and animals there. Also, check out uShaka Marine World. Also, ask someone where you can get Shisha Nyama around

Apart from Cape Town SA cities are generally not really great for walking, they are huge rambling places and a car and some inside knowledge from locals will go a long way. Durban city in itself is in decline and the money has moved up the coast 20 mins drive to Umhlanga which is alot more tourist friendly.

But you visited central Durban not the affluent North side of Durban like you did while in Joburg. In Joburg you were in Sandton& Rosebank which is the affluent areas in the North, had you gone to central Joburg you would have seen the homeless & the decay of the city, similarly for Durban you should have visited Umhlanga,Ballito, Zimbali which is in the North of Durban.

U got to Durban off peak. Those beaches get packed like Copacabana. It is party all the way. And yes, Durban is called the best city to raise family and live in, in SA for a reason. As for poverty, u were lucky to get to Joburg (ie if u walked Joburg the real one - i will check your videos) as the MAJOR CLEANUP is happening, otherwise poverty is all over. Your luck I must say.

Perhaps not for South Africans but for any traveler who seeks adventure it is the right time. It is like with us here in Namibia. I avoid going to Swakop and Walvis Bay during December holidays as I would just meet the same people from Windhoek, but it is an experience for tourists.
