Hey there! Since this video is getting a lot more attention than anticipated, I’ve gotten a lot of constructive feedback that I’d like to address and compile below:
1) Credit the original/support small businesses.
Yes! This is incredibly important. If you have the means, please support Hope Macaulay by purchasing her pieces. Her sweaters are truly iconic and are made with incredibly high quality material and craftsmanship and are probably worth every penny!
I did not do my due diligence when filming/making the video to provide proper credit so please check out her shop/instagram:
hopemacaulay.com
/ hope.macaulay
2) Problems with roving
This is a subject I had no idea was so controversial, which clearly shows I did not do enough research before making this video. Thank you to those who brought awareness to these topics!
As mentioned at the end of this video, roving is unspun material that lacks structure and has the tendency to pill/shed/fall apart if used to create a chunky sweater or a blanket. It’s far too expensive of a material for people to end up with a hand knit piece that will only last a season.
This is something I should’ve included at the beginning of the video as a disclaimer rather than tossed on at the end.
Some folks in the comments provided some better alternatives which I’ve linked here:
Chunky Chenille Yarn:
becozi.net/collections/chunky...
www.michaels.com/bernat-blank...
Chunky Velvet Yarn:
becozi.net/products/plush-and...
www.joann.com/bernat-velvet-p...
If these aren’t chunky enough for you, or if they’re not as accessible, you can also double up on the strands with a thinner thread to achieve a similar thickness and added coziness!
3) Proper care
If you choose to use roving (wool or synthetic) despite these disclaimers, you must hand wash/hang dry your cardi/sweater. Do not throw it in the washer/dryer if you do not want to end up with a pile of indiscernible fluff.
4) I am hand knitting in this video - not crocheting
I am a dum dum and did not know the difference. Knit stitches are “V” shaped and often used with two needles, while crochet stitches are more similar to knots and often used with a hook!
5) Support my friend Sarah Pan, who also made a DIY video for this sweater:
• i hand knit that $400 ...
Thank you for watching/supporting/giving feedback! Most of the comments are incredibly nice and I appreciate the constructive criticism. Thank you for helping me make this channel better :)

when she said she was going to use roving my heart broke lol. for anyone who wants to recreate this, use a super bulky yarn and if that isn't thick enough for your tastes, double up the strands. roving will not take long to fall apart even under normal use, it (obviously) sheds a TON, and washing it will practically ruin it.

Can you please please please suggest an alternative yarn? Thank youuu!
@laurenrose7230
@laurenrose7230 3 года назад
@@Superficial-Intellectual Of course! Personally, I would probably use Bernat Blanket Big yarn because it is still soft and large but has much more structure. The downsides would be that it won't look exactly the same due to its chenille style, it can still get expensive depending on how much you are using, and craft stores are often out of stock because it is a high demand yarn. Another option would be using two strands of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn which would be soft, stable, and cheaper but maybe not as chunky and oversized. Hope this helps

SORRY for nitpicking😅 But NEVER hang dry it, lay it flat on a towel after carefully squeezing water out of it. Same goes for anything knitted in wool... It deforms horribly if you hang it...

Chenille, blanket, velvet, and double stranded super chunky yarns are a much more durable alternative, and usually more cuddly! These yarns in the US are called Jumbo, and usually require 20-25mm needles to use if you want the same thickness as the one in the vid.

I've been knitting and crocheting for a while, and it makes me so happy to see other people trying out this hobby and being more ambitious than I was when I started out! This makes me sound old. I'm in my mid20s. I think her first project ended up great! I think my first project was to crochet a scarf, and I messed up the stitch! I was supposed to be doing a half double crochet and did something along the lines of a half double triple crochet hybrid. Don't ask me how I did it. I still can't figure it out.

Really impressed with how well this came out! I was wow'ed when you made the DIY Kermit a while ago, but this sweater looks like it'd be at an Urban Outfitters or something because it looks so legit. DIY'ing can save a lot of money and it looks like you're onto something with how efficiently you can make these sweaters. I imagine this is going to be added to your set of "hobby cubbies" but it looks great, especially for the Fall and Winter coming up 👏👏 "we'll figure out this shit show together" *same* lol great video Mira!

An alternative to just huge merino wool roving is super bulky thick and thin. You can’t get it at any of our craft stores currently but it’s all over Etsy. It’s a tad pricey because it’s hand spun and hand dyed but omg is it gorgeous. I wish I could link photos here. I’m a newborn photographer and I use roving and thick and thin to make little layer blankets to go under babies. Honestly mine have held up very well. I don’t every put them in water though I just steam them to sanitize. The colorful one you used should actually hold up pretty well I have a mini blankie done in that and it’s lasted a few years already. The regular roving from Michaels is better (more stable) than the roving from Hobby Lobby. Though I’ve managed to maintain both for a long time. Except one pink one that a baby peed on and I tried to spot wash it and it changed colors. The Gingko Leaf on Etsy does variegated thick and thin and it’s so nice. I have her pastel and bold rainbow and they are top notch quality and BEAUTIFUL. 1AZ Colorworks is where I get most of my solids and they have excellent quality too. They also do some thick and thin with random wool curls still attached and that has to be my favorite. They also have great sales.

I learned so much about yarn today! Literally had no idea. Haha! Also, can you wash/dry a sweater like this?!
@dandibambi

Hand wash only unfortunately :)) Who knew there was so much to learn about yarn of all thing ahaha
@minyummm

You handwash, and lay flat on a towel to dry. Please avoid roving, it can turn out disgusting after just 2-3 uses :( I crochet garments so I know a bit about this.

omg I LOVE HOW THIS TURNED OUT!!! AND IT'S SO MUCH MORE AFFORDABLE THAN IN STORES! hAHAHA i absolutely haaaate lint and for some material it tends to get everywhere around the house and it's super annoying. I wonder how long your sweater will last!! FINGERS CROSSED LONG

Theres a velvet yarn called xxl velvet plus bulk or something that I think you could of used and it would of been so much better. But just dont wash this ever and stay away from bushes lol
@missesmukta3415
@missesmukta3415 3 года назад
Could you wash bulky yarn? Like the one you mentioned?
@LM-lr9kx
@LM-lr9kx 3 года назад
@@missesmukta3415 yes you can! Its basicly a cloth that sewn into a tube so it's very durable! It's also very plushie. It is also easier to work up than the yarn she used because it doesnt try to separate.
@missesmukta3415
@missesmukta3415 3 года назад
@@LM-lr9kx also I have another question, how do I know if it is yarn or roving? Because the one she bought the package said yarn but a lot of people are saying she is using roving. So how can I tell?
@LM-lr9kx
@LM-lr9kx 3 года назад
@@missesmukta3415 well in general if you can take the piece and pull on it and pull it apart its roving. What this is used for is to make yarn. It is what you see spin in those wheels and stuff to make the balls of yarn. Yarn its self will be more strong. The fiber itself will actually seem woven to the eye. And if you pull on it it should hold tight like rope. (Not that you couldnt rip some yarns but still). Roven also can be spread or flatten out like the stuff you see people felt those 3d sculptures with. Also if you look up certain brands then you can find very pretty types of yarn you like to work with and start sticking with those. I find everyone has a favorite and it's fun to try them out.

I agree that Bernal blanket yarn is the best for this project. The original yarn you used will shed quite a lot. So have a vacuum machine to vacuum the shedded yarn on the floor.
