I Do NOT Recommend the Kodiak Canvas Truck Tent. Plus... Ham radio and lake view camping!

A group of friends and I camp at the lake and play with the ham radio! Also, my honest opinion of the Kodiak Canvas Truck Tent after using it for a year.
My thoughts on the Kodiak Canvas truck tent after one year of heavy use. This was a tough video to publish because I really do want to love this tent. While I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone, I still do use it and will continue to find ways around the issues that bother me. Make no mistake about it though... Kodiak makes outstanding ground tents. Some of the best in the industry. If there's one thing that their tents offer (truck tent included) it's their quality of materials and extreme durability. No one comes close in my opinion. I will absolutely add one of their ground tents to my arsenal someday soon.

I've owned many nylon tents for the last 40 years. I now have the Kodiak 12x9 Cabin tent, and the Truck tent for a 6'6" bed. I wouldn't give either of them up for any nylon tent again. I put a 4x8 piece of indoor/outdoor carpet on the floor of the bed, cot, thermarest pad, and sleeping bag. Expensive, yes. But you get what you pay for. The Cabin tent with poles weighs 100lbs. The truck tent is 43lbs with poles. I've had the Cabin tent for 8yrs, and the truck tent for 3yrs. The truck tent is a breeze to set up single hand. The cabin tent on the other hand, takes my wife and I about 15 to 20 minutes to setup. (2 hours? comon man, buck up). I've had the Cabin tent in a major thunderstorm before. Driving rain, and 40-50mph winds. The tent stood up to that great. Other camper's in our group with nylon tents all collapsed, and one ripped to pieces. We ended up with 12 people in our Kodiak waiting the storm out, and not one drop of rain inside the tent, and they don't sweat like nylon does. Good luck with Space Acacia. By the time you buy all the parts for it, you'll be into it for $1500 plus. The XL tent is huge folded up, and weighs 40lbs. The airfloor weighs 68lbs.

I really like my Kodiak Canvas truck tent. At 6' 2" in my Taco I just fit because the tailgate is down. I have never had any issues with it and it is of the highest quality. However, at 65 yrs old I am looking at other options. My personal cons of the Kodiak truck tent: 1. Once camp is set up, there you are. The truck is no longer usable to travel to a store, remote fishing spot or interesting area other than your camp site without taking everything down. 2. If you arrive at your camp after dark or in inclement weather, you either need to set it up even if you are cold, wet, tired etc or sleep in the cab of your truck. 3. If you are travelling across country, it needs to be set up at the end of each days travelling and then taken back down so you can get back on the road the next morning. Makes for more work than enjoyment on a long trip. My pro's of the truck tent: 1. Quality is beyond everything else out there. 2. I have never had it fail in winds, or downpours or snow. 3. It does have plenty of ventilation. 4. It is really cool looking! (not that important but,,,,,). 5. If you are going to be at camp for several days it is a great base camp. 6. Off of the ground!!!!!!!! Having said that I will never part with it but am entertaining getting a squaredrop camper. Pull into camp, crawl out of truck, crawl into camper and set up camp the next morning. Hope to do some more reset trips this spring. Hopefully I can chase 70 degrees.

I weld some extensions onto the rails of the Kodiak tent and drilled holes through them so I could mount speed nuts into the rail. I then use thumb screws to attach the rails to the bed sides. Makes setup time less than half. Sew some pockets into the sides of the tent to install magnets for better seal.

I was thinking the same if I was overlanding, I would set up my railings and keep them on the entire trip.

first of all i enjoy your videos i guess i ran into your channel because ive got a kodiak canvas truck bed tent as well had it for about 5 years now, i go camping fishing trip once to twice a year in the winter time with some friends we catch 1 to 6lb trout, I love my kodiak canvas truck bed tent i have a 6.5 ft bed so maybe mine fits better sometimes we get dumped on as much as almost 2 ft of snow, holds up well , the canvas breaths where the nylon ones dont means less condensation and quit in the wind, i do use about 3 magnets on each side, there about the size of nickles , i use a outdoor rug with a rubber back on the floor that just fits in the bed and a cot that only has two sets of legs so stradles the wheel well on one side, the only thing i dont like about it is that it does take a bit to set it up, i set it up one time in the dark in a rain snow mix storm, ya was kinda a pain, i like not having a floor in it . to heat mine i also used a buddy heater recently up gradded to a portable propex heater that i made, same exact thing as your chinese diesel heater but uses propane another pro tip is if theres some kind of trouble i can crawl threw the back window in the truck and jump in the driver seat and take off , granted i can just barely fit threw that thing anymore lol , must be my big muscular chest just wanted to give my 2 cents on my experience with mine thanks for your content, reminds me of my camp trips

Thanks! Yeah, the magnets are what I'm going to try as well. I REALLY want to love this tent. I'm still not convinced my issues aren't due to user error. Lol! 6lb trout! Wow!

I've had my kodiak for years and mostly go cold weather camping. I dont want a floor; I use a moving blanket and throw that down. I don't mind the setup as once you get a procedure down, it's not bad. Nice work.

I loved my Kodiak truck tent. One thing I like not having to deal with is a dirty ground cloth and tent bottom. Dirt tends to splash up on ground tents. It was also great at the beach to be up off the sand. I used it mainly for cold-weather camping since that's my favorite. I didn't want a tent floor - easier to use foam mats that are easily cleaned. That being said, I am a 5'4" older female and found the setup to be a bit challenging. I have since installed a 36" high ARE aluminum cap with barn doors and am able to leave it set up for camping so a real time and effort saver but also cost a small fortune and hurts the gas mileage. I've got a Kodiak truck tent for sale in Western MD if anyone is interested. I used it on a Ram 1500 w/a 6'4" bed.

If it has a floor you would have to deal with the dirt and take everything out to pack it up

So the problem with magnets on the side of the vehicle is possibly scratching the car. Getting bits of dust and dirt underneath the magnet or dragging it across the metal might scratch it. Being up off the ground is nice at times. Especially when it comes to the cold. Now you have the diesel heater, that helps a ton. Have you tried to put a tarp down on the floor?

The magnets will help for sure. They won't be in the bare metal. My plan is to place them in the canvas. The nice thing about the attached floor is simply because it eliminates any gaps or drafts between the canopy and floor.

Magnets on my Kodiak Canvas truck tent work great to close up any excess material. I have then sewn into leather pouches to keep from scratching the truck even though they are on the tent material.

I have a Gazelle 4-man, and I love it! The door did cause some concerns for me, but weighing the pros and cons, I went for it. I just keep reminding myself to take a step upon entry so far, so good (knocking on wood). Excellent in heavy wind and very spacious. Floors can be removed (attached to velcro) high on the walls to create a bowl to avoid water. I use a Cot, and it's perfect for these old joints. Lots of space for me. The door would be the only issue for you. Otherwise, I think it checks off your list of wants. I've camped in it 4 times already and very happy with it. Set up was less than 3 min. With one hand, by myself. (Sprang wrist). Too easy.

Check out the Lost Creek Multipurpose tent. It's based off of a insulated ice fishing hub tent. Screen windows and doors and zip out floor. Has a port for a diesle heater too. Easy fast setup. Price isnt bad either.

I am debating getting this tent. I do want quality. What I do not like about ground tent, is if it gets wets and muddy and you have to pack that up. But you live in Arizona, so rain probably isn't a problem. And as the comment below you have an escape in case of trouble, like a bear. In my case I have no back window, but I could climb on the roof. I wonder why having a nylon floor would b better then no floor? Do you think bugs can get in that tent from the gaps, like scorpions where you live?

Bugs can get in, but I'm thinking the magnets might help that.

Do you have a rubber floor mat in your truck? Might make the experience more pleasant. Also I just watched your Napier review, and you said there you disliked sleeping on the ground and greatly preferred sleeping in a truck bed for warmth and comfort. Guess you had a change of heart?

Well, I have a Kodiak. Absolutely love it. I am 68 and yes it takes me about 10 -15 min to set up. But I also have ground tents. guess what 10 min to set up. The quality of the canvass is top notch. One tent I do find interesting. It is a ground tent. I am looking into the air tents. The are intriguing. But the Kodiak is highly recommended by myself. WB5SIE Mark.
