A last minute change of plan saw me head to the Peak District with my Sony A7r to photograph the snowy landscape around Mam Tor and Winnat's Pass.... This old Sony camera did not disappoint .

The 'SURPRISE' in surprise view comes from the fact that as you drive on the top road from Sheffield towards Hathersage past the car park on the right then there is a sharp tight right hand bend which as you go round the surprise view is revealed very suddenly looking down the valley almost takes your breath away on a clear day. Walkers can stand at the viewpoint away from the road exactly on the inside of the bend. Most everyone uses the term surprise view to describe the general area.

When you enter the car park turn left and in front of you is the gate to the path to surprise view. You get a view of the valley from Hathersage off into the distance. If you drive down the hill towards Hathersage, you could nio into the Millstone car park.and walk back along the pavement to get quite good views. I don't recommend The Millstone pub, though. It's dreadful. On the approach to the village, there's a right hand turn to the church on the hill where John Little is buried. He was Robin Hood's lieutenant, and his grave is maintained by The Independent Order Of Forresters. Little John as he is commonly known, came from Hathersage originally, Loxley is now part of Sheffield, but it wouldn't have been in his time. Given the right light, there's some brilliant compositions to be had around the top end above Hathersage.

Cracking video mate. I would have no idea where to start with that style of photography, then again im the same with street photography. Jack must do a video attempting landscape photography haha

@ChrisBaitson we can all have tendencies to chase others while forgetting our own path. Finding my photography and niche is a step by step process that I will enjoy. 👊

Great video as Always. I'm a Pentax guy have been for 40 some years ha ha. If I strayed it would be to Sony. Think they are producing some awesome gear

Hello, nice to hear from another Pentax photographer, I'm thinking not to switch but to get an additional setup, the use of ovf for me is something irreplaceable, when I tried Sony cameras they were incredibly boring to use, bad ergonomics and something in the colors doesn't look good (personal taste) I started to follow Chris videos because I was interested in Olympus, I'm very curious which system you move forward and what's your opinion.

do you see advantages with the Sony R (compared to mft), I mean would you prefer it for landscape photography

The images are cleaner and the camera sensor has 3x the resolution so the files look nicer. But really it doesn’t make too much difference to me.

I think when you only use the kit zoom, you don't get the real potential. Obviously the greatest advantage is the possibility to work much more creatively with shallow depth of field.

I watched your videos because of the Olympus om-d em1 II, so now I'm wondering why you bought a Sony a7r? another question is why you use f6.3 in landscapes, would it be better going to f11?

Great pictures, just wandering what’s your favorite lens to use with the Sony A7R?
@ChrisBaitson

My only lens - the 28-70 kit lens. It’s not bad. I have some vintage lenses I want to try with it though.

I didn’t know they had a way lol. Always put them on that way around 😂

I noticed that in one of your past videos. Camera specific L Brackets obviously go on a certain way. If it is a generic L bracket (which I think you have) it should be put on the other way, so that if you wish, you can slide the L bracket further along and tighten it with the battery door exposed allowing you to change the battery without removing the L bracket out in the field. With it mounted the way you have, the battery door will always be blocked if the L bracket is attached. :) @@ChrisBaitson
