I do this every year, and my veggies grow out of control in the garden.
A good garden needs good soil, but many people don't know that now is the best time to improve their soil. Today's video shows you three ways to take care of your soil over the winter. These will make it healthier and more vital, and they will also get you ready for a great growing season next spring.
Just how often do you see bare ground in the wild? There's a good reason why the answer is "not very often." Wind, snow, and rain can easily wear away bare soil. All of those nutrients also wash away with the soil when it breaks down. In this garden, covering the ground is helpful in a number of ways. Weeds have a much harder time growing in organic materials like compost or leaves. You're also slowly feeding the soil, or more specifically, the life in the soil, which feeds the plants you grow there.
So what's the best way to make the best soil? You don't have to spend a lot of money on soil amendments. There are a lot of free or very cheap ways to make the soil better.
Start with the most popular ones: manure and compost. After this, you should compost everything, including tree trimmings, grass clippings, kitchen scraps, straw, cardboard, and leaves. It's free, so just add it all in! There will be a lovely friable compost that smells great and works great in your garden once you add a good mix of ingredients.
Of course, manure is also great, but it needs to come from a reliable source so that it doesn't have herbicides on it.

I was told we shouldn’t bury weeds. I was told we should bury food items of animal origin. I buried all of my kitchen waste and my tomato plants grew 10ft tall and that is after cutting the top as they were falling over. Harvested atleast 50 cucumbers from 4 plants in 1 month before they succumbed to bacterial wilt. Thanks for sharing!

May I also add that I save up fairly woody pruning and then when a bed is clear, perhaps after potatoes, I then dig the bed out, put the prunings down in layers with any kitchen waste, making sure that it is well trodden down, then a layer of soil and repeat. Should it be that a bed will not have a crop over winter, I cover in autumn leaves and prunings to protect from rain. If I sow seeds in outside beds, I find a very thin sprinkling of sawdust helps protect from drying out and hence seed germination. I also put loose twigs over to protect from birds and neighbours cats. I use only sawdust that I produce, then I know that it is purely from wood rather than things like plywood, MDF etc which have contaminants.

Several months ago I began putting all of my food waste, including bones, in a pile in the yard. It makes beautiful black soil, although things like corn cobs, avocado skins and squash skins seems to take a very long time to break down. We planted a few small persimmon trees and have experimented with putting the food waste at the base of one tree-that one tree has noticeably much darker leaves than the trees that don’t have food waste at their base. I’m going to start digging small holes for food waste next to each tree.

Compost is a mix of brown and green, preferably more of the former. I don't fuss overly about the ratio because it depends on what's available, and recommendations span quite a range anyway. I garden with soil that's a mix of organic cow and horse manure, and chicken manure with some residues, and some 20 year old wood chip and random piles of old compost or manure mixed in somewhere. The richest soil I've gardened with. Lots of wood chips and straw where it's useful. The base is yellow soil mostly.

I keep two bokashi bins for composting all food waste goes into them and the tea juice is used as fertiliser. After two weeks a full bin can be buried in the compost bin outside or dug straight into the ground. You can also make fertiliser from all green plants and weed soaked in a bucket best for weeds that have seed heads. Dry weeds or other plants dug up can be cut up chopped and then scattered onto plants as top layer mulch.

Whatever you do, don't use commercial "mulch"! This stuff is almost always old pallets that have been ground up into wood chips and treated with chemicals. Also, if you're using wood mulch, you might get some really undesirable fungi. Wood mulch can also absorb nitrogen as it breaks down, actually robbing your soil of that nutrient.

@joycemiller7908
@joycemiller7908 15 дней назад
My experience is that most of it will break down. Bigger chunks, eggshells, big fruit rinds might not totally. But I just move big stuff out of the way. The earthworms are already there and will flock to your lovely banquet. I’ve tried digging a trench down the middle and planting on either side and liked that but also put old broken down willow/rattan baskets from good will, dug in a couple inches deep to keep them in place and just scooped a shovel of dirt on top after dropping the food waste in. Both worked well. But I felt like the trench system left more room for plantings and spread out the buffet for the worms better.

at the end of the year i burn off the entire garden the heat kills seeds but near zero penetration so bacteria in soils remains intact! the burning of all the growth is like a super quick break down then immediately turn the soils and add peat or other amendments to the top this breaks up clays and adds another layer of enrichment to leach down and inoculates the garden for good bacteria in the spring then simply watch soil temps and plant the winter over areas for garlic etc...soak seeds in rain water before planting and pull some sets in buckets for over winter in a warmer building they are dormant but have intact root systems put them down in the compost pits in early spring the root systems only become all they were when they went dormant! if nothing happens so be it reseed with standard seed from your seed bank! over wintering peppers tomatoes onions potatoes etc works very well and using bottles and vinegar for dried egg shells makes a high calcium suppliment as the vinegar liquifies the shells...to almost pure calcium and other minerals found in the toasted shells...bake them off with your cakes and treats then mix with vinegar and co 2 is given off mix 1 cup per 5 gallons and we also use whole raw eggs shells and all when planting these nutrients are the cheapest super amendment with the seed! calcium and other organics break down over the tears for long term slow amending! in 3 years plant and run so your pants do not knock you off your feet! I have SOLID CLAY And endless weeds, loads of OAK leaves which is great for composting, (but unfortunately the acorns are hard work to separating from the leaves for me. I do it anyway). Anyone out there who knows how to deal with separating the leaves? Let me know. I’m currently experimenting with suppressing the weeds with spreading weed suppression sheeting. (Another area I’m using Black plastic in some areas. Eventually I’ll puncture the plastic for air to get through. I will remove the plastic in a few months & and mulch instead) I find that burying food waste raw & cooked attracts mice. (I do it anyway I’m not allowed to bin it in my area) I am surrounded by fields, it’s a loosing battle. there’s always mice! Yes I have a cat that helps a bit by keeping the population down (but also I’m chasing mice around the house in the middle of the night when the cat brings them in and/ Or I’m picking up bits of mice the next morning !) Bit of advice..don’t get a cat flap! Keep cats living outside, keep burying the food waste (far from the house,) grow mint on the parameters and lavenders near the house. Keep composting EVERYTHING regardless & hope for the best. I believe I can succeed…eventually! Good luck everybody.

I see you have clay soil and lots of weeds. Ive recently learned that 1. Some weeds come bc their purpose is to break up hard soils. Kinda interesting thought. 2. I've found that plastic sheeting keeps the soils unhealthy and hard. Since you have clay, the plastic would continue to keep it hard. Not good. 3. So, what I've seen recommended is to keep putting that compost in all areas of your planned garden or flower beds. If the ground is too hard to do that yet, put a thick layer of small wood chips down. In a separate section, start a compost pjle with yard clippings, leaves, manure, And do a sprinkling of water. Learn about composting with having brown and green materials and the heat needed to make the magic happen. Yes, get a long tipped thermometer to check temps and make sure to do a little turning and watering. If it stays in the right temp range, you will have some compost to add to your clay soil in no time!
