She didn’t send them back to Africa, tho. She would immediately sell all the jewelry she stole, usually splitting the money up with accomplices. So she herself profited off the “blood diamonds”.

I read about the people who knew her in prison. She's incredibly manipulative. Always trying to hustle and control people to do favors for her. Using a lot of foot-in-the-door technique. Currying favor by getting you to say yes to a small favor, then increasing the size for the next. If you refused her enough times, she'd eventually give you her death stare. One person who received that stare said she definitely has bodies in her history, and the fact they tell documentaries about her like she's a folk hero only indicates how far she's able to spin people.
