Typical transmission/bathroom window problem. He used the wrong trans fluid. Just drain/replace with correct fluid, the window will come around. Don't forget to fill it all the way to the top of the dip stick tube.
This guy solves more mysteries than Sherlock Holmes... Between GM engineering enigmas, NY crust and rust and DIYers repairs gone awry, South Main Auto is like a mystery series with strange clues, usual suspects (looking at you GM!) and (at least from my experience) the hero almost always saves the day and solves the problem for the customer...
For someone that doesn't work on cars and may have too linear of a logic line, replacing the CV Axles should have no impact on the trouble codes, so they would never think to check the fuse box. Now, why was the fuse pulled? Is there a soon-to-be ex-wife in the picture? Is' the "friend" also a shop owner? If so, like others have said, maybe it's them fishing for more work. Granted, this car owner drives a Caddy, but he doesn't treat it like one, that's for sure. As always, thanks for taking us along for the ride Mr O. Greatly appreciated!
"Granted, this car owner drives a Caddy, but he doesn't treat it like one, that's for sure." It's a 13 year old lower end Caddy. You can buy them for under $10k, sometimes way under.. It should not be treated like a Caddy..
I generally run into missing fuses when someone is pulling fuses to borrow to replace a blown fuse then they forget about it and ask why it doesn’t work. I then find a missing fuse. Happen more often than a person would think. I don’t think that was the case here tho but we will probably never know is what I say all the time!
100%. Pro auro elec here, and I see missing fuses all the time. Some people pull fuses so they can physically look into the side, instead of testing them with test light/meter. Then put them back into another empty slot for an option not fitted to vehicle etc.
I had one like this the other day.. 2004 jeep TJ ..CEL with a purge valve circuit high and a control side ac relay circuit high… they get the power from the same fuse. Missing fuse, put one in and BOOM… power to both, cleared codes, happy jeep happy customer. Looked around looking for the cameras…
I took my other truck into the shop for all the fluids, including the transmission, differential, oil, and trans case, to be replaced. When I took it in, it was full, but when I got it back, it was below the half-tank mark.
Maybe his "buddy" wanted to secure a little future business and he pulled a few fuses, fuses that would cause noticeable problems but not stop the car from being driveable?
People mess with there cars and don't have a clue what there doing , quit messing with stuff that you don't no what you doing take it to a real mechanic not your friend that just change tires , and add oil 😂
I was thinking the same thing. Or, maybe he was trying to stop the warning light on the dash illuminating so the wheel bearing would be "fixed" without actually replacing the part.
Aahhhh it’s your classic “musta been a rodent stealing the fuses” scenario……a tale as old as time. Accountability is becoming the rarest commodity in modern society…..and that is why SMA is a rich man folks!
Well, for once I have to agree with your "If I can do it, you can do it " statement. Well, if someone told me the fuse was out.... Thanks for the Video and "BEEING" so cool!
Honestly, it sounds like somebody was playing musical fuses, pulling fuses to diagnose a problem and never bothered to put them back in the right spot. Honestly, I would go over each and every fuse to make sure the right value is in the right slot. Something tells me you may not find too many properly installed, I try not to tribute to malice what can be blamed on stupidity or neglect. The first thing I thought of when you said he had none of these things working after changing the CV axles was that either somebody crunched a bunch of wires or they pulled out a plug by mistake or they blew a fuse
Payback is one thing but if you're just looking to have a little fun with someone, the ol "zip tie around the drive shaft" is always a fun prank (leave the tail on it so it swings around and hits stuff as the shaft spins) but you have to call them and fess up to it if it's someone who's going to take it in for service.
@fillg seen a few where people would zip-tie a harmonica to somewhere like the front bumper. Although they never complained about it, i thought it was funny lol.
I've encountered this same issue before. The customer absolutely swore it just quit working and no one touched it, but there was the missing fuse. I just shake my head and let them believe what they want lol. Easy money!
I went on a service call where a combine was dead. Ran when parked. Customer stated nothing was done to it after it was parked. I found multiple wires disconnected in the engine bay. I questioned the Customer again, and he stated they did replace the main wiring harness after it was parked.
I work as a fleet mechanic and had a very similar experience recently with a bus from another one of our facilities. Just like you I wondered who or why would someone do such a thing. Is it a test to see if they can stump you? Is it a test of your honesty? All I will say Mr. O, is I think you are one of the best I have ever seen. Keep us updated on this if you ever find out "the whole story".
When I was a mechanic for the NYPD we had many vehicles that were towed into the shop for a no start condition. We often found missing fuses. Seems some smart ass didn't like their assignment so they would go back to the desk an say the car wouldn't start.
Last fleet place I worked had a driver that would move a fuse to disable the truck so nobody else would drive it. Worked for quite a while since there were usually spare trucks and someone would just take a different one. Until there weren’t spares and dispatch wasn’t happy when they found out he’d been disabling the truck.
Eric - you are indeed a very experienced , knowledgeable , skilled , ACE TECHNICIAN - I learn much just watching your automotive repairs by video - absolutely love living in a time when I can watch you on the other side of the country ( I reside in Alaska ) - thank you much for sharing your vast expertise 🙂🙂👍👍✌️✌️
A couple years ago ,,I Had a Similar situation on a GMC 1500 Pickup . With Heater blower Motor problems and dome lite timer n headlights not turning on & off correctly ,, I checked under Hood & found some after market wiring that was incomplete ,,and some fuses missing . After checking out the wiring ,,grounds & components ,I carefully pulled all the Fuses ,tested them & replaced two fuses missing .. It fixed all problems ,,So I ALWAYS CHECK THE BASICS & LOOK FOR GOOD BATTERY VOLTAGE, GROUNDS ,,AND BE AWARE OF ADD ON WIRING ,,GOOD LUCK GUYS ,,ITS NOT GETTING ANY EASIER
Crazy not to get everything fixed. Hmmm, removed fuses..... Couldn't think logically why a fuse would be removed to change transaxles! I love the "you changed my oil now my **** quit working!". Either way, I hope he has you get the car in tip top shape! Keep us posted on that 2019 CHEVROLET! Chevy Thunder!
Multiplexing is what we use now on all the NYC Transit Buses, was a pain in the butt to learn but it makes sense the way they utilize it to eliminate the needing of seeing thousands of wires running throughout the entire car/bus. Its a good day at SMA when there are multiple videos to enjoy for the day.
@@allanszast7579I’m not a bus mechanic, but I used to work for a company that had a bunch of 2000-2005 Gillig buses with the Allen-Bradley system. IMO, it was overpriced trash.
Yeah pretty much all the newer buses after they got rid of Dinex which was just HORRIBLE! The newer multiplex definitely makes troubleshooting much easier. I mean fuck really can you just imagine that a bus as complicated as they are now with no multiplex and how much wiring and that would be throughout the bus non the less an Articulated bus. 60 Ohms and also remembering and always remembering to check the resistance at the end of the J1939 connections because how many times we found issues with it being a resistor at the End of the connection and literally knocked down half the bus systems and that.
I bought a mint 2003 eclipse about a year ago with 97k miles from a younger kid who said the transmission was "bad" he drove it to me $400 he had just had a friend do some work on the car before, threw the ol autel on it no com with tcm poped the hood opened the fuse box transmission fuse COMPLETELY MISSING from the fuse box. Put a 10 amp fuse in it from the spare section car drove flawlessly!
Eric is a genius. So fascinating to see his diagnostic logic. But I need to see more of Trinity and her German Shepard. Is he still in your family? It had been wonderful seeing her grow.
Someone saw something on RU-vid saying to pull the fuse before lifting the car, older caddies I remember the active suspension system had to be disabled before raising the vehicle. Way back when.
If the kid had an OLD TIMER work on the car that had the right idea but wrong generation - it is possible. This generation of Cadillac doesn't have air leveling suspension.
I changed some suspension parts and aliened the wheels with a string, steering wheel was perfect at 12 o'clock. I brought it to the local shop for a wheel alinement and your caddy steering wheel is what my car looked like when they got done. Either bring your stuff to SMA or do it yourself.
For me the best part of this video, is when he said (I just saw that sucker again) the look on his face is priceless. love your video you are a truth hero .
At least you found out why they had an extra gas pedal. The car is demoting drive because of the wheel speed signal missing nothing to do with the potentiometer in the gas pedal.
Your videos are the most informative, still leaves me with questions I can never get answered. Being a Toyota I’m not to concerned, I work at Chevrolet but the same concept applies I’m sure. I probably would never find the 120 ohm information.
This is my hyphotesis... he took the car to a mechanic for the CV Axle and at one point they needed a 10 amp fuse for something else and they pulled this fuse just because because it is easier and either they didn't care to put it back or they forgot to put it back. It was suspicious that the puller was out of place too.
😊I've had customers snag fuses to fix blown accessory outlet fuses from plugging in all their devices and then say 'hey car doesn't start, or cel light is on but not sure why'. You just never know what happens when your buddy works on it!
I've encountered this a few times and it's why I always tell people to grab a wiring diagram so you can test the specific fuse you're after. When I started all my bosses and lead techs would tell me to just grab a test light and blindly check every fuse as the first step to any electrical problem. You would miss this problem. Or at least always look into any empty fuse location that has contacts on both sides.
He was probably sitting somewhere there smoking one 😅, or he’s too high to remember at what point his lights stopped working properly, maybe it was before the axle job
I haven't been able to watch your videos for a while, so now I get to try doing a marathon/binge watch, lucky me!!! Great video as always! Did you ever find out from the customer what happened to the fuses? Since you did great honest work, I am sure they will be back with the car for the next electrical problem with low voltage for the BCM. I notice the fuse just above he missing one for BCM 6 had a 10 amp instead of a 15 amp 13:36 mark, so something will cause it to blow.
Don't yell at her. It's always nice to see Mrs.O, late or early. 😁 Looks like he was in there messing with it and didn't know what to do when he F'd it up.
Hey I love your channel ! In regards to what is a bus code, it’s you have a micro processor on the whatever the pcm is using sending a certain information stored to speak with that specific sensor and receiving back in a bus data. Using the by pass system that module can send information to multiple control modules at the same time. When the code arrives is saying the bus information either didn’t receive the information or it returned the information incorrectly. The Scan tool reflects that error as a pass or fail. Imagine the pcm/ecm needing to talk to all this sensors that are controlled by all this different modules it sends this information through a bus. Right there the technician can determine either the signal reference or control etc is not providing the correct stored data the manufacturer requires
First thing I though of was a ground was missing at the trany. After a trany rebuild on a 96 caravan, a mounting bolt was installed without installing the ground wire eyelet. It caused overheating as the cooling fan used that ground. Vice grips saved me on the Mass Pike!
A morning coffee and SMA with Mr. and Mrs. O is always enjoyable no matter the reason for the episode. Much respect for the trouble-shooting technique.
Multiplexing - very interesting. " a network device that allows one or more analog or digital input signals to travel together over the same communications transmission link."
Digital signals, saves wire but needs more computers to do all the ciphering. This has been the way for a while. We're using the electric grid that way where the new meters are installed.
Am I the only one that was curious about the warm air she wanted to went? 🤣 I just love your conversations. You just know it's when it starts with the 'oh oh, what's up Mrs. O!? Or a rant 😁
Hay, Thanks for all the effort in making the videos I'm learning a lot from you. Hope to buy a scan tool and scope when I can. Best wishes grease dobber
Great video. Want to ssrew with someone easily, just pull a couple fuses when they aren't paying attention. Is there a video coming for the 19 Chevy that you mentioned? Would like to see one if there is.
I have a "that guy" comes by my shop dang near daily. Considering that I'm just a DIYer in a private shop, on fully gated and fenced property... I should probably learn to leave myself alone with all that stupid crap. Sheesh
Aren't those multiplex circuits so much fun?!😁 On the equipment I work on they have two boards for the multiplexor circuits. There is 18 inputs and 18 outputs on them for each channel. Oh boy bad connections are a nightmare. The cars are quite challenging too I see with the circuits too.
Multiplexing means one data wire and one clock. (those can be combined to one) From a start pulse, often a long pulse, each device send it's data to the data wire after a number of pulses on the clock wire. The data can be both digital or analog. Just different analog values is not multiplex. I have designed code locks that was using both system and a 8 channel audio device with only one coax wire. It's very hard to make something as you describe since resistance change with temperature and in a car it change a lot, but it's simpler and cost less so they solve it with large steps between the resistance, but it's not multiplexing, if you press one button you can't press another one as you can do with multiplex like your keyboard.
G'day, Eric, and Mrs. O.! "Ever since you fixed my bathroom sink faucet. Now, my porch lights turn-on, instead." Just on a side note! We’re plumbers! Three of the best plumbers that ever plumed a plum. Reminded me of the boys finding themselves posing as plumbers and set out to completely demolish a house in the name of independent contracting. This is probably one of 'the best Stooges' shorts in that everything flows from one chaotic gag to the next. Bonus Points here, for Curly’s self-built cage of pipes and the interactive television demo of Niagara Falls. What is all this? What’s happening? It’s the plumbers madam and they’re wrecking the house. Lol!! Cheers! :)
I've seen that a few times at work. Pull a fuse have some fun. Ya, until bad things happen! DON'T DO THAT AT HOME! Good one Mr. O, nice to see Mrs. O, and of course......the kitty.
I always keep some spare fuses in the car, more for the case that I might need them for another car than the car blows fuses. Putting them in blank spots first make sure there is not an existing link in there, as some of those empty fuse locations are for different models with different options, and that fuse might be bypassing a relay and keeping a module on all the time.
Very simple explanation, find the cell phone charger that is falling apart. You'll then ask if the charger stopped working and if the lighter fuse was replaced. 😊
Since they are young, I'm thinking they deliberately removed the fuse in order to stop a dinger from going off or to clear a code or perhaps the removed the wrong fuse. I believe they were trying to remove the ATS fuse which is directly under the BCM fuse that they pulled. Eric O mentioned that one of the high beams was out and maybe they pulled the ATS fuse to prevent the adaptive lighting from turning on. It's also possible that the ATS fuse looks very similar to the ABS fuse because the print is so tiny and they pulled the ABS fuse to stop the drivability issue with the wheel sensor. If they are young, they probably don't have the incredibly useful scanner that Eric O has and we are looking at this through the lens of hindsight instead of why is my car acting funky every time I drive it.
Another excellent informative video thanx Eric. Totally off topic question for anyone in the SMA community. Is brake fluid flammable? All I see on the bottle is boiling point of 254 degrees.
I've had similar issues with amateur/home mechanics. They don't understand electronic controls so pull fuses thinking they are protecting modules while they work. Cant pull the battery because the have no radio code or similar. Do the work and forget to put the fuse back in.
You know - about the only way to handle an employee that comes in 4 mins late is to dock their pay. The only problem is - they usually know and talk to the other women employees like the bookkeeper, secretary, cook, janitorial services, etc, etc. as well as the girl friend at home. And they'll all gang up on ya. So - might wanna just let that slide this time. 😁 Love the channel - and Mrs O. when she's ranting. We know who really runs the shop. Kitty. Makes you jump when she wants in the office.
I love the dynamic between you and Mrs. O 😂 you guys are awesome. Oh and don’t forget the cat scanner! I think someone either sabotaged that car.. Or this has DIYer all over it. Maybe he was “testing” fuses in an attempt to fix his headlight issues 🧐
We are kindred spirits in that I too carry an epi pen. Got to be carefull around the bees. I'm sure we would all love to hear why the fuses were missing.
Had a similar situation. Towed in, no crank. Replaced the starter. Now it's a crank no start. Called the customer for the rest of the story. He didn't do anything but attempted to jump it. Found 3 misplaced fuses🤦♂️ Customer still had "no idea how that could have happened" His wife was standing there as he paid for additional diag. I let him stick with his story! Lol
I feel your pain Eric O...I'm deathly allergic to bees and wasps too. I love the summer but hate that bees and wasps are everywhere and they are a nuisance. I feel that it had to be a "buddy" screwing with him...that's not a real buddy though doing shit like that and that person needs to pay for the bill
Now, I believe you said he had a friend help him replace his cv axles. I thinking another friend decided to punk him by removing the fuses. In any group of guys, there is always one who thinks he is funny when he is just an a-hole.
