HOW I REVIEW:
As you might know from my „How I make a buying decision“ video: Rather than just looking at the pros, I like to evaluate the cons or flaws of an item and then evaluate if I can live with them. That is why in my video reviews I concentrate more on the cons of an item rather than going over all the features. Therefore everything shown is just a fraction of all the points that go into the verdict and score of an item.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUICKLOOK AND A REVIEW:
A Quicklook usually covers pre-production units or items that I only used for a short period of time. While Reviews cover final items that I have reviewed intensively.
LINKS:
For all my videos I decided not to include links for the products. Everyone is living in different countries and therefore has to deal with different shipping and customs fees. That is why I would advice everyone just to Google the product within their country to find the best deals. For instance: I live in Germany, It wouldn’t make sense to give you a German link while you might be living in USA or Asia. I hope that is understandable.

I agree with you on all points. There are some points (maybe sternum strap on a backpack) where I am fine with them. The v-buckle are the best and I like to replace other styles with the v-buckle when I can.

Agree, never come across an issue for V-buckle as it is not designed to open without pulling the tab. Others seem not secure enough though.

I respectfully disagree with your suggestion about brands not using fidlock. There are plenty of hardware options out there. I think the specific issue you and many others are facing is brands choosing the wrong buckle for their particular use case. The snap or slide is great for something like a sternum strap, where ease of use is important, but security when being handled is less critical. With countless options available, manufacturers need to consider the qualities and functions of a buckle rather than just how it looks, otherwise you can end up with a bag which can unbuckle itself when being moved, or a buckle so inconvenient that you would rather take the bag off over your head.

fidlocks/magnetic hardware are great for compression straps and sternum straps. I think they work great as a belt buckle as well since they're super fast to undo when you have to remove your pants.

To be fair, the Fidlock craze also led to designers pretty much „overusing“ them. I mean, what do you need a buckle on the top of a laptop compartment for? They are awesome on a lot of contact points though … if their use is thought through. Helmets, sternum straps and other more specialized use cases (Fidlock makes an awesome bottle holder for bicycles) for example.

I whole heartedly agree. The more I use them, the more i dislike them. I will not use them for a strap closure on a sling, for the exact reason you state. As pocket/pouch/compression/ sternum strap….. they always close themselves when you don it want them too. It’s always annoying when you go to toss in your pack, and the next thing you know…. You’re tied in a knot because the sternum strap closed itself. Or you get stuck to a magnetic whiteboard….. I’ll take some nice, working, old reliable clips.

I just got an Alpaka sling, and it uses Maglockz instead. Kinda similar to Fidlock, and they use fidlock on other stuff as well. The buckle on the strap is a slider and I would see it being really hard to accidentally undo, although it is easy to undo with one hand if you are trying. I also don't have much issue with having to adjust it on my back in the first place, but when I slide it around to grab something it is very secure and not an issue. But using the buckle does seem to make removing the bag more awkward, rather than easier sometimes. Mostly I just remove it or put in on overhead. But it has come in handy if I am wearing a lot of layers and it the bag is packed out. The buckle can be sometimes easier. Nice to have, but not necessary, kind of thing. Alpaka does also have a Magnetic stabilizer strap that you can order separately that would prevent the bag from moving around while riding.

I am glad you brought up this point. As an user experience architect I always pay close attention to my interactions with the products I use and fidlocks to me are fiddly. They don't always work as intended each and every time. Whereas I've never had a problem with Duraflex clasps and the interaction is always consistent. Even with the V buckle on my MW Spar, it takes extra focus to ensure the buckle is latched properly and more times than not I need to watch what I am doing however the Duraflex clasps I can do without looking without fail. It is tried and true.

I’ve learned not to grab and pull on the lock itself when I swing my bags around
@Youknowthebo
@Youknowthebo 2 года назад
Yeah, that's probably the easiest. But on a motorcycle with big gloves while concentrating on the road, you can't always grab the right part of the strap. And with this particular sling the fidlock is in a place where you are most likely to grab it accidentally unfortunately
@1partgeek
@1partgeek 6 месяцев назад
You confirmed my concerns with Fidlock buckles. So for me, I reserve Fidlocks for sternum straps on my EDC backpacks - NBD if I accidentally unbuckle it while wearing right. For motorcycle use, I go with the classic snap buckles only - very secure and you could still technically release it with 1 hand. Great video as always!

Ive only ever used the v buckle & never had any issues with it. I would say if anything maybe theives could get in it quickly but from my experience absolutely nobody can figure it out when they try to open my bag 😂. My orbit gear messenger bag has a square magnetic fidlock buckle but only on the stabiliser strap I would argue this is the perfect use as its not super important that it stays closed & its easier to work with. I do however see your point made in this video.

@@Youknowthebo oh no, I was referring to the actual product name that fidlock gives them. The one that is featured in your video and is a lot easier to detach is called "snap buckle flat", while the product that I am referring to is called "slider 25". It's very interesting to see all of the different versions of these fidlocks that they have. They are surprisingly not even too difficult to find if you want to buy them and upgrade the existing buckles on your bags! With that being said I am not disagreeing with you, I don't think that they are quite the right choice for every use case, especially not ones where accidents are of concern. I love your videos by the way!
@ez5969

I believe it is the designer's duty to properly research the type of Fidlock fasteners used. There are many options for any given application, most likely there is one that will perform better than in your use case.

I finally relented and bought a sling bag with fidlocks but agree 100% that one should not attribute to them the same level of security as traditional closures. For my travels (motorcyclist included) they are not a replacement for other locking mechanisms. In fact, the speed of unlocking is undermined by the worry they will open at the worst possible time.

For me it's definitely a matter of context and user experience. I love fidlocks and I never had any issue at all with them and I have a lot of bags with magnetic buckles. I understand your user case but I guess to each their own. I always handle my bags very gently and I'm super aware of moving them around my body so for me fidlocks are just great. I know traditional duraflex of WJ buckles feel more secure sometimes and they will cut down the prize compared to fidlocks but I love me a good magnetic buckle.

Agree with you on the shortcomings. It needs to go back to the drawing table so to design in a safety catch, which could be as simple as the catch tab to turn 90 degrees and fit into a holding slot, as opposed to just hanging free. The way we utilize them is with straps that go under the clothing just below the belt line, to hold flat money bags.

I agree, Bo. But for a different reason. I'm OCD and I don't like anything closing by itself. It robs me of agency; I must be the one to close/open any buckle. I don't like things closing on me automatically (as in the case of a Fidlock closure on a flap, for example). When did doing/undoing a buckle become such an inconvenience that we need magnets for it? However, don't tell the folks at Carryology that, or you'll upset them. It's a hive mind over there.

Fidlocks are fantastic buckles with outstanding functionality, but they are not correctly marketed to the correct audience. Fidlock's value is that it opens easily without dexterity or strength. I have worked for two outdoor adventure gear companies and one wilderness emergency response organization. The functionality of accidental release for even casual hiking gear is analyzed closely by companies, because that gear could hold a life saving communication device, water, compass, emergency whistle, map, fire starter, cold/wet weather gear, food, etc. Cases where people die in the wilderness while hiking/camping/climbing are analyzed carefully, and in most cases the reason is due to lack of appropriate gear or preparation for difficult conditions. The gear that you can buy at REI, Eastern Mountain Sports, and L.L. Bean is generally carefully thought out, with the knowledge that a small percentage of their customers will either use the gear more seriously, or will find themselves lost, injured or facing challenging conditions in the wilderness making the functionality of the item important for their safety. Fidlock's value is that it opens easily without dexterity or strength. Fidlock is a fabulous solution for the disabled and babies, who lack dexterity. In this case, the ease of use and most likely lack of danger to others from a disengaged item makes Fidlock perfect fit. Dogs and dolphins, and other animals lacking an opposible thumb could be taught to operate a Fidlock. Imagine a rescue dog that could fetch a first-aid kit and bring it to you! (Don't laugh. Rescue dogs rescue people in wildernss, fire, flood, and avelanche conditions every day). Fidlock is also an excellent solution for inside vehicles/planes where gear is strapped and needs to be relased quickly, because the floor of the vehicle would catch the item preventing loss or harm to others. In any circumstance where the buckle is holding anything expensive or important, or the buckle will be used while traveling at speed or heights where a disnegaged item would cause a hazard to others, FIDLOCK IS A BAD SOLUTION.

Putting Fidlocks on a helmet has got to be the most irresponsible and unintelligent move on the part of a manufacturer. I'm surprised they're even allowed to sell them. And anyone criticizing a user who rides a motorcycle is missing the point entirely. It's not where you're using it, it's the system itself. Whether I'm riding or just going for a stroll, I shouldn't have issues that are inherent to the design, period. Double D-ring on the motorcycle helmet, side-release buckle on everything else. I'll take that reliability over the novelty factor of a Fidlock. It's such an overrated and overpriced product.
