I Don't Think Basil is Straight | Omori Analysis 

EDIT: So it's been brought to my attention that the reddit post I linked and mentioned in the video has been taken down. The details as to why are still fuzzy to me, but I'm greatly disappointed in the Omori reddit for how they decided to handle the situation if what I've heard about what happened with the original poster is true. It was a genuinely fantastic and sympathetic post about Basil's mental state and his thought process throughout the course of the game, and I hope the original poster is doing okay.

Thinking about how Basil's bed is the only bed other than his own Sunny finds comfortable.

The line: "They're comfortable, simple, modest, and perfect. Just like SUNNY." is fruity as hell.

God, I remember how confused I was when people started calling sunflower a toxic ship... It had been my OTP for a *while* and when I saw that take (and everyone starting to go on a moral panic and start hating on sunflower in favor of suntan), it felt really weird haha. I guess that's kind of the thing with omori's fandom being young and people wanting to be as irreproachable as possible without really understanding what's genuinely bad and what's just... a harmless cute ship. I feel like this fandom is always looking for a subcommunity to bully/call problematic to have a moral high ground, sometimes. Or maybe I just spent too much time in it, lol. I really like the points you're raising about people using the 'stereotype' argument as a shield for what is... mostly homophobia. I've only seen queer people in the fandom so far and omocat herself has written BL before -- it's not too far-fetched to assume that the most flamboyant guy with an obvious soft spot for his male best friend might be gay. I'm pretty sure no gay guy is complaining about people headcanoning Basil as queer 'based on a stereotype'. The people who claim to be protecting the queer community by saying Basil's straight are all cishet, strangely enough. /s It was a really good video (also I really really like your voice haha, I was playing acnh while listening and treated the video like a podcast and it was Great), if you're planning to do other videos of the same kind I'll sure be here to watch them !!

Something i've seen weirdly few people talk about is how basil can be *very* easily interpreted as a trans woman. His liking of traditionally feminine things and his first friendship connection being with Aubrey being the obvious ones, but also how he tends to be more shy can definitely point to him being less confident in the gender he presents with. Along with lots of other things about his character. The first time I watched a playthrough of omori the whole time Basil read as a trans woman to me so I was super shocked to find nobody bringing it up in the fandom and I was a little disappointed it didn't get mentioned in this video

When playing Omori for the first time, I definitely got the sense that Basil has some sort of feelings for Sunny beyond friendship. Though, I don't think he fully understands them.

Also, basil KNOWS about flower symbolism and language, he talks about the symbolism of the plants that represents his friend group and how they correlate with how he sees them. The fact that sunny knows what the egret orchid symbolises implies that basil talked to Sunny about flower symbolism. THERE IS NO WAY Basil didn't know what tulips represented, boy is definitely implying something 😳

thinking about how it was Basil's idea to get the violin for Sunny, and how Sunny playing that violin was the first thing that he took a picture of, and how months later when he got the photo album for his birthday he went back and had that picture of Sunny playing that violin be the first picture in an album entitled "Basil's Memories", rather than his birthday pictures, but didn't include any other pictures from that Christmas like to imagine 11 year old Basil hearing Kel talk about Sunny trying to play his old mini violin and immediately walking into Hobbeez with no concept of how expensive a violin is, presumably to actually get it for Sunny's birthday over the summer, before realizing that he was going to have to actually get the entire friend group to work the entire summer for it

Also on a side note Sunny can rate others' beds and Basil's is the only one other than his own that he considers comfortable (NOT IN THAT WAY), implying he feels at home in Basil's room, after having spent so much time in it. I really like the whole, bed thing, because in reality, if it's not a mattress you've slept in, it's not all that comfortable. Ugh, and not to mention that Sunny doesn't find his own mom's bed comfortable (which is really sad and I know from personal experience that once you feel too old or you feel you and your parents' relationship has gotten bad, their bed is no longer safe or comfortable) and coupled with the fact that we never see her and she's always sending him voicemails (and yes I know they're going through a big change, moving and all that but *still*), my guess is that their relationship is slightly functional at best and strained at worse.

Kel is definitely a lot more complex than people think. He is actually similar to Sunny in some ways. Both characters put the feelings of others above themselves. With Sunny, this is what led to the incident.

I feel like Basil is actually the (physically) strongest person in the friend group. Have you ever tried to garden for your entire life? Bro's out here lugging soil bags around and carefully tending to multiple plants every day. I wanna see Basil lift Kel above his head in front of the entire friend group, ngl.

I think that the OMORI fandom could do with recognizing the difference between "I think Basil and Sunny are in love" and "I think Basil and Sunny would be perfectly happy as a couple". When I say I ship Sunflower, I mean that they have weird, messy, romantic feelings for each other, and I want to explore that dynamic-- what is, what was, what could have been. That's why I'm annoyed by people saying "Sunflower is toxic" as if that's not half of why it's so interesting to me. I'm not the one saying they SHOULD be gay, I think they ARE gay already, and I want to see all that it implies.

One of my favorite parts of the Sunflower ship honestly is just imagining Sunny as an adult trying to explain to people how his best friend literally gouged his eye out with garden shears, and not only were they still friends, but they ended up falling in love lmfao

also if you look at Sunny’s side of things, in headspace its shown that he isn’t very fond of physical touch. for example when they all sit on that sofa in the over world and aubrey leans closer to omori and he leans away. or in the tag cards omori tends to not reciprocate any touch from his friends. however if you unlock boss rush mode on the switch, omori tags basil by holding his hand tightly and dosent seem to deny physical touch with basil. its overall a really cute touch in my opinion.

Thank you for this video. It was really well made! As a gay man from a small religious community who also grew up in the 90's/00's, I immediately saw myself in Basil and just... assumed he was intentionally written to be read as gay. I didn't realize it was a controversial opinion because to me it seemed so obvious. Of course, I don't really care or mind when people see Basil as something other than gay, but it does irk me when people act like they can't understand why people *do* read him as gay. Thank you for putting so many good points together so succinctly! I also think it's worth pointing out that daisies (the other flower that Basil is associated with) are often used as a depiction of perfect/true love, because it is technically two flowers that grew as one. :) As for Sunny, I read him as bi the whole time. The 'string of fate that ties you together' felt like a big nod to the 'red string of fate' of true love. Not to mention Omori caries the rescued Basil princess-style in the Hikkikomori route hahaha. 11:55 there is something so true for me about this. Normally with fictional characters I understand when people dislike them and am perfectly fine with agreeing to disagree, but the reasons I see often baffle me when it comes to Basil. Basil is the most selfless, kind, and tragic character and to see him portrayed as some sort of evil psychopath because of his mental breakdown at the end of the game pisses me off so much. Basil’s parents left him with his grandmother because they didn’t have time for him, and because of this he’s super attached to Sunny and his mental health has been suffering. The fact that Basil knew how to stage a suicide suggests that he may have considered it at some point. He then gets abandoned by the person closest to him after doing the worst thing he’s ever done, and he’s then subsequently bullied by another friend for something he didn’t do. He spends 4 years in this small town deluding himself, trying to get through each day and still managing to take care of all of his plants, and finally Sunny comes out of his house! Maybe things can be how they were before, maybe he can get some reprieve from the constant turmoil. He then learns that Sunny is moving in three days and that hope is shattered. He gets pushed into the lake by someone he thought to be a friend, and is now on the brink of suicide, when the boy he’s been deluded about walks in.Basil is not a bad person, he’s a person who has been broken in many ways throughout his life and can no longer tell the difference between reality and delusion. I’d go into how much I hate the idea that Sunny despises Basil, but this comment is already too long so I’ll leave it at that

I'm a straight girl, and I can see that Basil is gay AF. I mean, he helped cover a manslaughter without hesitation and kept it under wraps for four years, and was ready to take the secret to the grave! There's only two kind of people who do something like that for another person: their mother and their spouse! And I also love Sunflower for the healing together angle, but also because, let's face it, nobody would be able to understand Sunny and Basil's situation but each other And thanks for recognising Kel has issues too, and he's just better at hiding it. I also would like to add something to the flower language pile! So we all know that Basil associates himself with the sunflower, but he says that sunflowers is what he WANTS to be, not necessarily the flower that is most close to his personality. There is a popular theory that daisies are the flower that represents Basil the best, and what do daises mean in flower language? True love. Also, in Basil's real world sprite, he wears a pink daisy and pink daises mean gentleness, love and romance (they also symbolize feminine energy so interpret that to whatever you like)

Remember guys Basil is (gay) Suffering from extreme mental trauma, and his 'devotion' to Sunny is born from a deep rooted fear of being alone, resulting in his breakdown when he is told Sunny is leaving. He can't handle not having Sunny around, jokes aside as a Sunflower shipper i find this video unironically really great

One of the artists for the game, Archeia, was a sunflower shipper even during the game's development. You can still find an unused test sprite sheet depicting what basically is a Sunny/Basil ship child in the game's files.

I think the devs didn't want any ships (besides hero/mari) to be actually canon but wanted to leave some crumbs, because after a game comes out one of the biggest reasons its going to stay alive is because of the fan content, which is mostly going to be ships. Though I guess basil canonically being gay wouldnt make much difference, BUT it could come off as random/unimportant, or like you said overshadow other aspects.

First and foremost I ship both Basil and Sunny with therapy But for real there is no doubt that Basil is at least gay. In my headcannon though I like to see them as just best friends, I feel like I don’t see enough platonic friendships in media these days. No hate on any other ships, people like what they like!

Basil went through four different iterations before Omocat settled on the soft, uwu, flower boy we love. And made him the only blonde of the group; and we all know the BL trope of light/dark hair. She planned this, she knew what she was doing!

I like unperfect ships because they arent perfect. It makes it so much more relatable and fun to think about. No relationship is going to be the best perfect most amazing thing. Its all bad. And in sunflowers case its through this bad experience the two can help eachother move through it. As many other people in the comments have said only they can understand eachother.

Basil's character is beautifully written, just like this video. A lot of the people who argue against him and his ships seem pretty young. As a young person myself, I understand how it can be difficult to know what to trust and what to argue for. But I ask the people arguing against him to hear me out when I say to EMBRACE IT!! It is not a bad thing to enjoy something because it looks 'stereotypical.' It can actually be comforting to look at him and go "lol that's me." Stereotypes don't have to be seen as these terrible traits made to tear something down. They can be considered relatable, so anyone associating him with a certain sexuality, gender, etc can find comfort in that relatability. Headcanons are a wonderful thing for this reason. They can make a person feel like they are not alone. So, why tear down a harmless headcanon simply because it's 'cringe' or 'stereotypical?' Like it or not, the idea that people associate Basil with the LGBTQ+ community or heaven forbid ship him with another boy is comforting for those reasons, and that's why people like it so much. That's why I say to embrace it for what it is and try to find some enjoyment rather than be so quick to judge and argue. Again, this is a really great video that opened my eyes up to some things. Please make more like this

I didn't know that I needed this video, when I was playing Omori, I couldn't help but sense that there's something about Basil's attitude towards Sunny that sole friendship couldn't explain, even the best of friends lol. This video helped with clearing some things up haha. I'd like to add that although Basil's commentary on Sunny can be explained by his obssessive attachment issues due to preexisting childhood trauma, it doesn't rule out the fact that Basil may have romantic feelings towards Sunny. The reason why I'm saying this is because I've seen plenty of comments where people claimed that the only reason why Basil called Sunny ''perfect'' or acted the way he did with Sunny was because of his traumatic circumstances, and not attraction, and that Sunny is the only person that understands him and gives him what he wants. To be honest, I think that's too much of a bold assumption, because that's also literally how most romantic attractions develope, so why so confident on asserting that Basil only views Sunny platonically? Having personal experiences of developing attachments on a friend of the same gender only to discover later that it's attraction, as well as having unhealthy, obsessive, and idealizing tendencies towards those I've felt attraction to, I've always deemed Basil as a relatable character, someone living with childhood trauma, and someone with anxious/obsessive attachment tendencies. I feel like I continue to find myself coming back to this video constantly, but I think another thing to point out regarding Basil's clinginess and protectiveness that is often overlooked, is that at some point in the months leading up to the Incident, he already nearly lost Sunny when Sunny almost drowned at the lake. Basil is the only character in the friend group that we don't get to see any kind of reaction from, since he didn't put anything in the photo album about it, and he obviously isn't present enough in the current day to ever say anything about it. I think the key of what makes this incident important to the way that Basil views and treats Sunny is that in this instance, Basil was powerless to help Sunny. Basil can't swim, so if Mari hadn't jumped in to help and Sunny drowned, there would have been no way at all that Basil could have protected him. The incident not being mentioned in the photo album at all makes it really interesting for me to wonder about WHEN the lake incident happened. Did it happen prior to the beach visit, where Basil kept Sunny company on the sand? Sunny is never shown going into the water, but it's also hard to believe that Mari would want to visit the beach if both Basil and Sunny wouldn't be able to enjoy the water. Then it could've been prior to Sunny's birthday, since that is when Basil's photo album says that the rest of the group needs to take care of him since Sunny is the baby of the group, or maybe it was closer to the end of the Summer, which is when we know that Mari was more busy with college prep and Sunny chose to hang out with Basil more. Maybe I'm just weird for thinking too hard about this incident, though. Something else interesting about it is that headspace Basil's dialogue in the spider room of Black Space seems to imply that Sunny has memories of opening up about the lake incident to Basil. It's really the only indication in the game that that aspect of their relationship went both ways, since every other mention of it focuses a lot more on Basil confiding in Sunny. If we are to assume that this implication is true and not just Black Space imprinting random memories on Basil, then Sunny opening up about the incident to Basil would also throw Sunny's fears of spiders, heights, and drowning, along with Sunny's feelings of being too weak and helpless to try and save himself. If you take the shock of almost watching Sunny die and combine it with the added context that would come from Sunny opening up about how he felt in that moment, it's easy to see why Basil would become more clingy and protective of Sunny leading up to the Mari incident

I think Basil and Sunny do like each other (but I don't ship them), I also found it really cute the way Sunny looks at Basil in the photographs. Edit: never mind, this is now my comfort ship! (Sunny X Basil X therapy)

As someone whos loves this ship and can also somewhat relate to basils attachment towards sunny, and I can also agree that their shouldn't be any rush when it comes to them dating there's a a lot of trauma they need to deal with before even thinking about getting into a relationship. And I think every character in omori needs some serious therapy. i didn't play the game just because I liked a ship but because it showed me how unhealthy coping mechanisms can affect how your brain works and damage you. I love how well written the game is and how well written the characters are. with all that said I loved this video and I hope it helped other people understand why people think he's gay and that's its not JUST because of the way he looks.

8:48 As an aroace person, I can confirm that I have never had this specific feeling. That being said, feeling any attraction at all (and I do, quite prominently so. Just not romantically or physically) was... confusing... like I'd always have to have an internal debate with myself whether what I was feeling was a crush or not. But looking back armed with the knowledge I have now, I can definitely say that it wasn't. You explained Basil's inner character so well through this video. I've always disliked how people saw him as the bad guy, when in reality he's more like a misguided soul, consumed by trauma and protecting Sunny at all costs. As a queer guy myself, I've always seen Basil through my own perspective as a very deep and interesting character which most people overlook and take at face value. The trauma he went through, the mental health issues, and the possible confusion about religion, gender, and sexuality you brought up all mix together into in my opinion one of the most well-written video game characters I've seen in recent years. (Plus the thought of them healing together also brought a smile to my face cause you don't really see that too often throughout the fandom, So thanks for that)

Awesome essay on my favourite Omori character! After reading the white tulip dialogue there was no conceivable universe in which Basil wasn’t at least a little gay. As for Sunny being a bi disaster? Sounds relatable as hecc and I headcanon

8:55 *I feel so called out right here, oh boy* I’m a Pansexual and Demisexual person (which basically is that I feel attraction to anyone regardless of gender, but I only feel attraction to someone that I have formed a strong emotional bond with.) I had this friend in 9th grade who wasn’t who would become my best friend, we would spend a lot of time together, like a ton. At the time, I was questioning what my sexuality and gender was and would switch a lot from label to label, I only knew that I wasn’t straight nor cisgender. So something that I would notice is that I felt a bit different when spending time with my friend, like a confusion feeling of happiness, but also affection, which was something I never experienced with a friend, I would often do stuff for them like small favors or get them gifts, and even do some things because of them, heck because of them, I downloaded discord and made more friends there, but something was clear alright, I was very very attached to them. I thought it was “Oh maybe I feel like this because I have trouble making friends” becauseI have to have problems making friends or keeping those friends (side note: I actually had like two best friends, the person I’m talking about and another one who isn’t my best friend anymore due reasons I don’t want to talk about), so I thought this was normal, it wasn’t because I don’t feel this way with my other best friend. Insert 26 of March, I was going to their house to celebrate their birthday (another side note: that’s not their actual date for their birthday, but they wanted to celebrate it again this date because they wanted to celebrate it again wi the me and other friends of ours) I met greeted my friend and hug them and everything, and after few more people came wr started the birthday activities, I had a lot of fun that day and it’s one of my happiest memories. But something clicked that day, and that’s was when I realized “Oh shit, Im in love with my best friend, aren’t I? Like I didn’t know how to feel with that realization, I think I got the equivalent of a gay panic that day. After that, I kinda became more affectionate with them, until they announced to me and my other friends that they were gonna move away to the USA (yes we live somewhere else, not saying where) which left me devastated, and this was in the last day of school. So I we try to do a lot of stuff to enjoy our last moments together. In the same day, I ended up telling them that I was in love with them, which their reaction was to apologize for not noticing that and the signs, which I told it was alright but I pretty much knew they didn’t share the same feelings as me, which to me, it was fine. So yeaaaa, that’s basically that moment where I felt like I could say I was definitely Pan and Demi, we still remain best friends to this day, although we occasionally call each other nicknames like sweetheart, dear, mi amor (my love in Spanish) and etc.

really off topic but the way you present (not to be confused with how you present your identity but like present information) is how I also present (the hand gestures and nervous giggling) and I've always been self-conscious about how I present since I always felt that it's "unprofessional" and not fit (especially in an academic setting). but seeing you present and how you express your passion in this topic kinda helped me think about that, and you present well!! when you said that Basil "creates" this monster that actually killed Mari it got my theory brain going. Thinking that maybe Sunny's "Something" is further powered by Basil's own denial. Basil's own insistence that Sunny would never do something like that. Considering how we know that Omori is the false Persona of Sunny to basically create a completely safe space for Sunny to never face the truth, we still see two invaders. One is stranger aka real world Basil, as well as Sunny's Something. When also thinking about the Egret flower and how it represents "MY thoughts will follow you into your dreams" is it not a plausible theory to think that Sunny's "Something" is not powered in part by Basil himself?

Also, gotta say, if Basil *was* bullied for his gender expression growing up (obviously we don't know for certain but as you said it could be possible) then it would really reframe what Aubrey did to him in a MUCH worse light. I mean, imagine being bullied as a kid for not fitting gender expectations, finding a group of friends, but then when you're in most need of someone one of your friends suddenly starts relentlessly bullying you for being a "freak".

I love this video, it's everything I've been trying to say but couldn't because I didn't know how. But this sums it up completely, thanks for this video.

this is was an amazingly written video. how you described things were *perfect* (lol). i’ve seen so much hate for basil and especially sunflower. at first when i finished the game i loved sunflower. it was my favorite ship. then i kept seeing hate for it and some people genuinely had good points that countered what i thought. so i stopped shipping them and i didn’t hate it but didn’t like it either. but it has gotten to the point where i’m guilty and feel the need to clarify he has issues whenever i say that i like him. i honestly love that you gave all the reasons how each ship would need working on. also finally kel is getting the recognition he deserves with his obvious repressed grief. i fully agree that sunflower doesn’t work rn. they need to heal more before actually getting in a real relationship. dating when they are both in that mental state right after post game isn’t healthy for either of them and im glad to said it (heck thinking about it in literally 2 of the 4 main endings sunny sewerslides. basil in 2 tho im sure he’d be even more messed up after the bad ending. geez these kids go through a lot). its been something i needed to hear from someone other than myself. now im gonna get into some personal things because i am a major basil kinnie. he’s my top kin too. ngl seeing all the basil hate from the fandom has actually affected me. like genuinely. being so emotionally connected to him and understanding what he feels because what i’ve been though like him (not the incident but pretty much all the other stuff). even tho i haven’t gone through EXACTLY what he’s been through. here’s it basically, one of my best friend moving deeply affected me, not to mention my best friend replacing me for another at the same time, my childhood abandonment issues, intense anxiety, generally being obsessed with others and thinking so highly of them. i could go on but i’ll stop there lol. but really, hearing how much people hate him feels like they are taking about me too (i have bad emotional connections to kinnies so that could be why). just watching this video makes ME feel understood. i’ve been misunderstood by others my entire life and now that basil is understood, i do too. I think I could write an essay about how I hate the two views of basil in the fandom. There’s this side where they think he’s an “uwu soft femboy baby” and the other that think he’s a “psychotic narcissistic malicious murderer”. when he’s neither. he’s a complicated character and im sick of people boiling him down to those. the bottom line is HE IS TRAUMATIZED. the reason he’s the way he is is because he’s traumatized. and like i’ve said, as a basil kinnie im tired of it. i want my top kin looked at in a better, more real light than he has. i could talk more but i’ll restrain myself for now. thank you for this video, genuinely. it’s amazing and points you made are all very true. this has honestly been a great start to my day again thanks for taking the time to make this amazing video - a queer basil kinnie

WAIT A SECOND... people think he's straight??? as a gay guy myself, i really see myself in basil. his awkward behavior (like you perfectly mentioned) is exactly how i felt as a kid. also just living in a small religious city as well, is a huge factor imo. HE'S JUST LIKE ME FR! both me and my close friend agree that basil is gay because he scarily reminds us of the vulnerability that comes of being gay and having to keep quiet about it. we made a little (dumb) theory that if the good ending wasn't an allegory of forgiveness and mental health, surely it would be an anticlimactic allegory for being gay. hiding it from everyone else, and though unsure of what everyone around you would think and though things around you will change while you're still figuring out yourself, in the end, you tell people what you are, and no matter what they say, you're content that you've finally said it. anyways i really love this video. i love watching omori essays and i haven't see one that i love this much in quite a while, so thanks for that!!

The argument that Sunflower is toxic always seemed really weird to me, and this is coming from a Sunburn/Cactiflower shipper. Like you said, ALL of these kids are traumatized and dealing with it in really poor ways. And the word "kids" is an important one here, I think. Sans Hero, all of these characters are literal children, and even Hero is still technically a teenager. I wouldn't assume that they were gonna be the most well-adjusted people in the world even if they didn't have to deal with the aftermath of Mari's death. I wish more people would just admit that they ship things because they find the ship charming. Like, do I have ANY reason for shipping Cactiflower beyond "it's cute"? Of course not. It's just cute. I can come up with more reasons for Sunburn, but even then my main reason is "tomboy x malewife, so cute"

I'll be honest, I have a couple issues with the writing for a lot of the characters (most of it just comes down to not showing enough of them) but Basil easily has the most complex and complete story. It's such a shame views like this aren't more common, people kinda just pick the most broken kid and pick on him

I'll admit that I have and always have had mixed perspectives on Basil being gay or not, because I think for him and a lot of Omori characters (especially Sunny) its more complicated than just gay or straight, but you did take my one perspective of Basil being COMPLETELY straight and drove it into the ground, then ran it over with a car. So kudos 😂

The first time i saw BASIL and they said ''he'', me and my sister looked slowly to each other and had a shocked face because BASIL is a HE, i was so shocked.

Im wary watching most omori videos related to shipping/headcanons since the fandom for a very dark game also says fucked up things to ppl who like fucked up ships in fiction... but I was pleasantly surprised at how you handle each topic! sunflower is such an interesting ship, and like any other ship (no matter how fucked up it could be), its valid af, and basil and sunny relationship is so interesting in general. Basil has always stuck out as queer-coded to me so seeing it actually explored without it being the butt of jokes in the fandom is something I don't get to see a lot, especially on RU-vid. Banger analysis and very fun and tasteful video and covering of the topics. 10/10

One thing tho, if Basil really had a crush on Sunny I would imagine he would've acted at least a little bit frustrated in that memory where he discovers Sunny had a crush on Aubrey

I joked about this video a bit, but actually went and watched it out of boredom. This changed my view on Basil, and has definitely resonates with me a lot. I did sorttt of already headcanon him like this, but this definitely makes this all a lot clear for me.

Also: I find it so frustrating the double standards headcannons for completely unlabeled characters get. If someone says “x character is cisgender/heterosexual” no one bats an eye. However if someone says “x character is queer” then people will crawl out of the woodwork to not only say that isn’t a good headcannon, but that the person is actually an awful human being for thinking that. Like why do we have to justify our headcannons just because we assume a character could somehow be like us. Fandom is wild sometimes lol

Unrelated, but as a trans female who gets gender envy from Basil, it's confusing as fuck.

I want to talk for a bit about my experiences if that’s okay. I know that I’m VERY late to the party and all, but oh well.. Anyways, as a transmasc person that just so happens to have social anxiety, Basil is without a doubt one of the most relatable fictional characters ever, even if I don’t really relate to the whole “hanging a body and feeling trauma for it” thing (I doubt anyone ever actually has that, honestly, No offense it’s just oddly specific), although I do have some trauma that I still sometimes think about to this day. What I’m trying to say is that I’m the type of person to project myself onto fictional characters, and Basil is the only character that I can project on with him still being, well, in character. If I try to relate to anyone else, I end up viewing them in a way that isn’t exactly canon (often very far from it) y’know? I love animals. I love flowers, I love taking pictures of things, even if I don’t really like being in them. I ADORE learning about the language of flowers, and I want to know why people thought of them that way in the first place. Human nature is so mysterious, and so is nature itself, and I just wanna learn more! Sorry for the whole essay..

Honestly it blows my mind to think someone could play Omori and NOT think Basil is gay?? The queer subtext is barely "sub" in this case. I'm not really into Omori shipping in general, I'm all about that found family dynamic personally, BUT like. The flower language and his actions in the plot alone are like??? So yeah I am here for you spreading the important word.

Amazing video! I've love to see more of your thoughts on Omori! In my opinion, Basil is definitely a queer character. Omori has such intentional writing, omocat is clearly obsessed with details and is an excellent writer, there is NO WAY she wrote basil and didn't intend for him to be in love with Sunny. and honestly people discredit it because it's toxic but imo I think that's important, people would rather avoid these subjects because it makes them uncomfortable, but omori is a game all about dealing with uncomfortable feelings.

I absolutely agree that Basil is gay and I adore SunFlower fan content, though I tend to interpret their relation as being a bit one sided. Basil is completely in love with Sunny and sees him as perfect, while Sunny doesn't reciprocate his feelings in the same romantic way. Don't get me wrong, Sunny absolutely sees him as his best friend, but it's heavily implied that Sunny's crush is Aubrey (which I also see as being very one sided heh). So I imagine Basil being absolutely in love with Sunny, watching him crush on their mutual friend while needing to hide his feelings for the sake of the friendship. Though, I won't entirely rule out the idea that the two may eventually date after the good ending.
