I don't like, agree with, support or want a fake watch but I do want to try and understand why people keep buying them.
Thank you so much for WATCHing my video and I hope that you check out all my other content.
I release 3 videos per week, all watch related, including reviews, first impressions and general watch related topics.
I try very hard to diversify my content as well and will feature big known watch brands, microbrands as well as Aliexpress watches.
The majority of the watches I feature are in the affordable range but I do try and get some less affordable watches as well.
Most of the watches that I feature I have bought with my own money. I buy them to enjoy and wear but I also to feature them on this channel.
Being a smaller channel it is challenging to cover the cost of all the watches that I buy and partly because of this I have become an affiliate member with a number of companies including Aliexpress, Ashford.com and Jomashop.
If you are looking for watches from well known brands then it is worth checking out:
www.ashford.com
www.jomashop.com
As an affiliate member I may leave affiliate links in the descriptions of videos. These links will direct you to the watches that I’ve experienced, reviewed and would certainly recommend. If you choose to use those links I will earn a very small commission.
Thank you very much if you choose to use those links.
Below are affiliate links for my absolute favorite watches on Aliexpress. Each of them I have owned and had positive experiences with the stores that they are linked to.
San Martin SN004-G (my favorite San Martin Watch):

Mirrors my experience a few years back when two of my pals worked on the oilrigs. They were naking a fortune but still flaunted the fact that they had bought fake Rolex's. Excuse? Saved a fortune but could show off the brand ....whilst still boasting they were fake...quite bizarre!

here's the thing: these days you can get super fakes that are so good the only way to tell if it's fake is if you open it up and look at the movement. So the main thing comes to whether or not you have the status to buy that watch. If you are just an average joe and you are walking around with a Royal Oak on your wrist, people may think it's fake even if was real. Most of us won't be able to afford those level of watches. That's why I like Christopher Ward. You can get top shelf quality at a reasonable price and and it's objectively a much better watch than a fake.

James, Great video. I agree with your point of view. For starters, I have yet to meet in the flesh someone that is a fan or has a deep interest in watches; and that thing where people almost forget the brand of the watch they are wearing happens very often in the day-to-day. That's why we're here, because out there it's almost impossible to find people excited about wristwatches. Best regards

Well. There’s a reason if you’re caught with 1000 fake Rolex Watches at customs, you go to prison. If you import a 1000 San Martin Sub Homages, you’re just a business person. Some people think they are both the same, but in society, a line has to be drawn somewhere. Great video as always. I think it says a lot about a person who nonchalantly buys a counterfeit product.

Ha, nice intro James. Back in the day whenever I visited Bangkok I made a bee line for the fake watch stalls in the night markets. Who can resist a $40 Rolex Oyster ! Or Longines etc Yep they were fake and didn't last longer than a few years BUT they got me interested in real watches, so I bought my first Seiko and here I am now appreciating all these quality time pieces that don't cost a Rolex :)

Fascinating! I'm no psychologist, but the haste to admit the watch is fake makes me think they are frightened they will be called out for pretending it is real. The lack of interest in your watch is just typical of shallow narcissistic people, I have met a man who bored me to death about his IWC but showed zero interest in the watch I was wearing.

I have a friend that has a Kermit and Daytona fake Rolex….he was quick to admit they weren’t real, and simply said I bought em because I like them. Straight away he said it was fake as well. He showed me intentionally because he saw my channel, and watches my videos from time to time. As far as the buying a Swiss alternative, I don’t know, the clones/fakes that are out there are really well made, aside from it being fake, the super clones are indeed that, super in quality. The movements in “super clones” are getting more and more difficult to discern the real thing. I had a friend who wanted me to source him wirh a fake, or lead him to where he could get one. I said as a watch enthusiast I couldn’t do that but he could buy plenty of homage watches from Ali….he didn’t want to do that. I think the primary danger is people selling them as authentic, and the super clones can’t be caught by even some more serious watch enthusiasts. Some thoughts….

(prostitution, and human trafficking) Good video James. This is one of my favorite of your videos. I’m not into fakes at all. Years ago I thought the only person it harms was the people who buy fakes and the large company who brand name is on it. But now, I realize selling fakes is how crime organizations make money and fund things such as human trafficking. That brings another level of disgust to counterfeit goods, including fake watches.

Get off the plane, and catch a taxi to Lucky Plaza and get taken in to a back room where there were wall to wall Rolex watch's and Gucci hand bags. I had a fake Rolex that never missed a beat, always told the correct time and lasted for years. Never really gave a thought to how or where they came in those days. Certainly do now!!

My take is I suspect there are several elements to these four people’s thinking; The person likes to focus on brand names, they’ll also wear high-cost branded trainers, caps, underwear, etc., perhaps also counterfeit, or of questionable origin, so long as its cheap. I suspect you’ll find they’re more likely to spend alot of money on their phone, upgrading, contract, etc. To them it’s the brand name that matters, not that it’s a watch (that’s just jewellery to them). They know they will never be able to afford a genuine watch of that brand, but this is a way to look the part and impress their mates. They have a degree of pride in appearing to own a high-end brand, but in getting a counterfeit (saving themselves a small fortune they don’t have) that is “so good” they are virtually bragging about it (ie “look how clever I’ve been to get this fake”). The subtext to insisting that the counterfeit is really good is to say that, by extension, they are too. So, to those they meet, they’ll show it off (look how clever I’ve been) and to everyone else they just want to impress them. Lastly, they’re not interested in you, or your genuine watch (unless it’s a brand they know and like), because they have narcissistic tendencies and have absolutely no interest in watches per se.

It is odd to think that there is a priority of a name over actual quality.

@@WATCHingJames Social media is the main driver for this I think as ordinary people see celebs, musicians, the famous, etc., they follow showing off their this or that watch and they want to be like them, or have a piece of their unattainable lifestyle. Big watch brands know this, which is why they all use ambassadors. It’s ’aspirational’ ie all about the brand name, which is why eg Breitlings are so expensive (for what they are) as an access fee to join the club where you’ll find celebrities. Psychologically owning a counterfeit is a bit like standing in line for the celebrity autograph, I suspect.

James i totally agree! Short story and some rant.. Abt ten years ago i got a g shock from some online website, it seemed odd that the price was low but i thought i found a bargain. It broke on the lugs after 2 months. Since then i realized there are fake ones for alot more brands then i ever thought. I decided i wil never buy a fake one again even if meant to pay extra for my peace of mind. I proudly own 1000+ usd watches and pagani homage that cost 80usd. I love em all and as you i love talking abt my own collection. Buying fake watches makes them feel, in my opinion, like they "screwed the system". Its abt the high they get from it. Its wrong in so many levels and they are spitting at the watchmakers and engineers that worked for hundreds of years to get us where we are now. Above all it's illegal! If i see one i call them out on it! Sorry was a long rant, thank you for talking abt something so important to us all!

Oarsum vid James! And U are correct about “look at my fake watch”🤩syndrome. I’ve been down the watch rabbit hole 50 years this year, & I meet quite a few watch guys passionate to chat about their watch or collection. I work with a guy who is passionate about his fake sprite with a crown logo and a ‘genuine’ eta movt inside… (drives a beema), he’s not into dialogue about any of my watches, even when I showed him a gen bluesy! (He probably thought mines a fake) In contrast I chatted at length yesterday with an 87 yr old Digger Bob, wearing a “Lest We Not Forget” dialled fluted bezel watch his wife gifted him, his daily beater. I guess the ‘feeling’ and modern day concept of wearing a watch is exciting for our masculinity, and then there is the “look at Mee” status of the logo people for social status in their tribe.

Its perspective. We take watches seriously. To some they are a fashion accessory and a bit of bling. There's no deep appreciation of the quality or workmanship, its all about the look and clout. The 'fake it until you make it' brigade don't care about authenticity. A fake watch is just a prop. Like their fake handbags / sports shoes / clothing / jewellery / hats / team jerseys. They don't view buying fakes as illegal or immoral. To them its like buying costume jewellery. What matters is the look, not the price. When fashions change next season, a lot of 'current year' props will be sent to the Op shop and a whole new wardrobe of fakes will be bought cheap so they can keep up with the current trends.

They weren't immune to a particular watch's marketing and branding but they wouldn't dream of spending that sort of money on a watch. I get it, if you have a casual aquaintance with watches, why would you ever consider such an expensive purchase, it's just another piece of jewellery. They buy the fake watch becuase it's cost effective and gives them the look they like. They probably think people are mad to pay so much more for the real thing which is why they have no quarms letting you know it's a fake because to them it's excellent value. They aren't exposing themselves to the risk of an expensive repair, insurance, or worrying about where they would feel safe being seen wearing it. It's all the bang without the buck. At the other end of the scale I know that a lot of people who own a Rolex have absolutely no idea about watches. They understood it was a well considered brand, was reasurringly expensive and more importantly, knew no one could look down on their chose. Oh, you've only got a Rolex! will absolutely never happen to them. They are guaranteed to never be embarrassed in this way. Rather like why all celebrities have iphones. They know nothing about mobile phones, they just know that it's considered to be the best brand. They will buy this one watch and just wear it until it stops working one day. And in all that time they will very likely never give it a second thought. So, in the end who is the real philistine?

@@WATCHingJames The third part of this triangle is that most of the claims watch manufacturers use to sell you their very expensive watches are built on sand, almost none of them really stand up to scrutiny. These are probably the two most famous examples. The Rolex Explorer wasn't the first watch to reach the summit of everest, or any other Rolex model for that matter, it was a Smith's Deluxe. The Omega moonwatch you buy today has a totally different movement to the one in the watches that landed on the moon, so aren't even replicas. NASA actually tested an earlier version of the watch so the one they ended using wasn't the one they tested. Turns out space just isn't a difficult environment for watches. Omega only found out when they saw their watch is press photo's, they had no idea NASA were using it. The reality is these companies do what they need to sell enough product to stay in business. It's us who crave the magic so they just give it to us and we love them for it.

Why own a fake watch? 1. You own the real one but you are worried that you might be mugged so you wear a fake instead. 2. You want to see if a certain expensive watch is right for you. Get the fake and wear it for a while to see if you like it. You will never be able to borrow a real watch for a similar experience. 3. To get the watch you want you have to jump through stupid hoops. Waiting lists, or even worse, paying above retail to flippers. Bypass the whole idiotic process by getting a fake. To me the biggest sin in today's watch world is to pay above retail to flippers. That is much worse than buying a fake since you are creating an artificial market and you are making it difficult for people to obtain the watches they want because all the watches are in the safes of speculators.

I beg to differ with your opinion about 'the people who buy' fake watches. I am a collector and have been for over 30 years. I have everything from my trusty $30 Casio to an Omega Aqua Terra Worldtimer GMT which cost me over $15000. In between I have Chinese, Japanese, Italian, German and of course Swiss-made watches as well as a few Chinese made homages from brands like Pagani Design, San Martin etc. I've also purchased 3-4 fake watches one of which is the exact Aqua Terra I own. I bought that fake as part of my trial to see if I would bond with the style of the watch, or more to the point, whether the style of the watch blended with my lifestyle and the way I dress, what I do for work, my social outings etc. The fakey cost me around $500 and is of similar quality to the San Martin for example yet it's the best $500 I've spent since had I not tried the 'other' fake watches I would have probably ended up buying the original and then completely regretting the purchase and losing much, much more than what those fakes cost me. I've kept the fake and wear it when I travel to not-so-safe places or if I'm going for a swim or out hiking. I've had it for over two years, it's still going and serving more purposes than what I had initially bought it for. Is it the same as my Omega? aesthetically, almost... quality? no, sense of pride? not at all but knowing it cost me 1/30th of the Omega and gets half the wrist time makes me want to keep it and always brings a smile to my face, the reason I collect watches in the first place.

This is one of your best videos. It's called delusional James. They are not watch collectors sadly they are all about status and ego. Very sad individuals who possibly need therapy. Ali Express do sell many fakes not just homages. Great to know it's not just me who has suffered this type of individual.

The one with the Panerai his might be real 😆 and like one comment says they did it so they won't be called out on their fake watch and 9/10 they probably want the name like "rolex" and they don't really care about the heritage of the watch like you pointed out when you showed them yours

That’s a great watch. I’ve had the manta ray king turtle and really liked it.

Well a San Martin can go toe to toe with a Seiko no problem and even beat it. Liking the style ? Get a homage , but a fake is lying .

It would be impressive if someone could make a fake F91W that's cheaper than the real thing.

Hahahaha. I just got the real one. It’s tiny.

Wow. Generalizing from the few (you) to the many (us) is always rubbish. Fact is I can get watches such as Sinn that are nigh on undistinguible from real for less than 10% of the price.
