I've just listened to her 2002 live in Aukland performance of this song. The purity of her voice as a 14 year-old girl was something to appreciate but 10 years on as a young woman with the experience of life behind her, make this a truly delightful performance.

Hayley Westenra has great, beautiful voice.

I noticed that, it was almost all in vibrato. She's so gorgeous and I will always be loyal to her music, but...the lack of control is noticeable. It no longer sounds like perfect pitch clarity. Her voice seemed so crystal clean, diamond clarity. I miss it to be honest.

Haley Westenra sings divinely. i would also like to hear her sing vocals on trance progressive music.

well... she is sometimes compared to lisa kelly who was also in celtic woman both singers sang same great songs solo such as 'water is wide' , 'may it be' and .i dreamed a dream'... in my opinion , lisa kelly's versions are better than hayleys'. but hayleys' voice was really shining than anybodywhen she sang solo and duet in celtic woman album"new journey" .. hayley has beautiful high voice but she seems to be getting more vibration in high sound range as she gets older ,which i think is sometimes becoming obstacle to express the real emotions of songs... even in this song , she had unneccessary vibe... just my opinion.. anyway, shes great singer of course

I suggest you watch the interview again from the very beginning, and turn the volume up. She is clearly surprised and expresses that too. HE--says we are not ready to rejoin the Albert Hall yet. I still prefer Hayley's earlier performance--if I'm still allowed to say so.

I saw a Duet between Hayley Westenra and Mario Frangoulis, truly beautiful. And yet, I dream of her singing with Josh Groban. Her Angelic voice paired with Josh´s male voice would be something truly amazingly beautiful.

Surprise interview? Are you kidding. You comments show lack of understanding of the meaning of this song and its place in Les Miserables. This version has infinitely more emotion and feeling than that performed when she was 14.

I'm amazed that in ALL her renditions of this song, her handlers NEVER informed her about her wrong sweet attack to this TRAGIC musical piece.

I love Haley's voice. This bit is one she should avoid. In Les Mis this is sung by Fantine, a women to whom life has been very unkind... And she's dying. Not a good song for sweet, much loved Hailey. None of this is to take away from her genius. To make my point, see the Ruthie Henshall or Lea Salonga versions -- much truer to the theme of the song.

I love her work, but this was just odd. The intensity of the vibrato just made her voice sound forced and artificial. She can do better. But, everyone is entitled to a bad day. She's still an amazing artist.

I feel no emotion in this performance, which bothers me tremendously considering the power of this song. Although she's usually a good singer, I didn't appreciate this performance particularly. Also I think the lower notes ("as they tear your hope apart") were quite bad and the shaking vibrato made it unbearable.

Well she's engaged to be married, so I think she has and is in love.

She has an amazing voice I cannot deny that, however it seems off here and not suited to the song.

What's up with all of the vibrato in her voice? That's completely against her typical style. Very strange. Also, still infinitely far away from sounding like shes ever been in love, but better than her completely cold attempt at this when she was younger. She's getting there.

Her attraction is her gentle/vulnerable/pure voice. This song is for more of a commanding/powerful voice. Anyway she likes making songs a version of her own, just like she did to 'Scarborough Fair' :)

I prefer Susan Boyle's version.

Well--I have to say that I preferred the version she sang when she was only 15, in Auckland NZ to this. She sounded a bit strained at times. I bet she wasn't happy with this surprise interview.

Nope. Aesthetic taste only negatively reflects upon you insofar as those who disagree with you decide it does. As for me I agree that Hayley excels in straight-tone, which I get the feeling she did more in her teen years. Vibrato washes away most if not all of what makes her stand out from all the other great female singers in her style. That being said it's far more difficult to convey emotion in straight-tone, and people often find it lacking because of that.
