I came into this drive with some serious concern that the AMG guys would have ruined the best part of EQS, the comfort of the drive. Good news! They didn’t. If you had to spec an EQS for yourself, which drivetrain would you go for - 450+, 580 AWD, or AMG?
depends on your needs, If you want the most range, live in a climate with barely any winter/snow & don't care for driving performance that much, go for the rear wheel drive 450+ If you care for driving performance or live in a climate with proper winters/snow & want a good compromise between performance and range, go for the all wheel drive 580. If you care for performance & sporty optics the most & range is not that important for you, go for the all wheel drive (winterproof) 53 AMG. Keep in mind that their might come an EQS 63 AMG in the future, likely a 3 motor variant which would cause a healthy jump in price and driving performance. Either way the EQS weighs ~2.7 tones (~5950 lbs) so don't get fooled in thinking its a track car, the only place you'll be able to utilize the kW's is on a straight line. Personally i'd take the EQS 580!
I'd probably get a base model because nicely spec'd high trim 580s already run near Model S plaid money. I'd rather have a base 450 than a model s long range for the luxury, but I'd rather have a Plaid over a 580 or amg if going for speed.
For someone that has mentioned hating it a dozen times, maybe you should just go ahead and turn off the artificial noise. And while you say it's "silly" others might like it, so don't make them feel badly for it. You made your point. 10 remarks about the brakes. Same. The tightening of the seatbelt is absolutely by design for safety. It's detecting high G forces and tightening things up very intentionally. The suspension "might be rougher due to the large rim size." Well, of course it "might" be, but what was YOUR experience. You don't say, as if you can't tell, and if you can't tell, that is important to know. As someone actually in this market, your real time commentary is a bit basic for those that want real feedback, especially from someone that has driven the other variants. All of this said, I still watch your videos and like the methodical nature of your range tests. I just think for the drive tests, you might want to think about the fact that the demographic for at least this car may not agree with your. The RS e-Tron and Taycan are totally different demographics. The people buying an EQS AMG don't give a darn, and they're not buying it to track it or for 1 second better on the 0 - 60. You say the intended purposes is a comfortable daily driver. Really? On what do you base that? They're buying it because it's the most boxes they could check at the dealer. I know this is a year old and a first impression.
Somehow everyone is kind of forgetting, that S-Class is not for racing. S-Class was always for luxury, presidents and politicians get driven in them, at least in germany. Porsche always for cornering and so on. Everyone is asking for everything at the same time. Porsche never had the biggest fuel tank and the s-class was never made for trackdays. I don't get journalists today.
@@johndough6777 Yeah cuz they kind of dropped the ball on the exterior but not with their new prototype. Have you seen that? It’s GORGEOUS! Inside and out. So that’s my new dream car lol
@@InSaN3ViSioN Talk about ugly? Tesla leads in that department - probably the ugliest interiors of any car I have ever been in and I have driven a Model S for a few years. This EQS puts that car to shame inside and out.
Technically, this is the second EV AMG. The first one being the 2013 SLS Electric Drive, which, funnily enough, still is the most powerful AMG to ever be delivered to customers. That will only change once cars like the EQS 53, AMG GT63e and AMG One come out.
I don't understand how people keep defending Tesla's $100K car that have fit & finish issues, cheap interior parts, moody software issues, and phantom braking.
@@20luzer52 I've been watching Netflix, HBO Max, RU-vid and live TV programs for 10+ years with the bonus of being able to store 10,000 hours of audio and video. Have you heard of tablets and hotspot and $5.99 adapters for laptops/phone? Besides, in Tesla, one can only watch videos (even the passengers) when the car is in park.
Hey Kyle, Mercedes is out of my price range, but if I had the money I would buy the EQS 450+. Since all wheel drive is not critical for me there's no reason to buy more car than needed. Besides, it's sooo easy to go crazy with the options available, making the EQS "the Mercedes Benz of electric cars" with a price tag to prove it. Thank you for your excellent drive reviews. 👍👍
Just wait a year the resale value of these cars will drop rapidly, most especially because no one likes the EQS. I also think the BMW i7 just trashed the EQS to hell, BMWW is like the starship enterprise, and the EQS is like the mini ship that goes into the enterprise! The luxury difference is outstanding!
If there is a future 63 variant of the EQS, I hope it would have at least 850-900hp with 0-60 in the mid 2 second range. The front bumper, side sill, and rear diffuser, should be changed to something completely different for a full fledged 63 model.
Just watching after a long time. In fact, if the system is the same as my older AMG 43, in a non responsive driver situation, the car will steer itself to the shoulder. Smart!
Great looking car... Good presentation! The driver lane assist distronic extended restart in stop and go traffic (auto pilot) is better than Tesla in some ways... Very impressed so far. Yes, I own one of these. 450+... and traded my Model 3 performance for it... Thank you!
How so? It’s quiet, but other than that , what’s advantages? Range is mediocre, it’s heavy, very expensive and long-term battery life is questionable. Where’s the beef?
@@alexnutcasio936 Range is mediocre ? This car has WLTP range of 470-790 km range. Most of high end EVs are heavy and expensive. Long term battery life questionable ? how ?
@@jonpetter8921 Can you tell me how long that battery will last in a cold or hot environment and charged to 100% daily? NO, you can't and so can no one else. ASs to range, thats under best conditions on the EPA test and does not subtract for weather (cold) or HVAC use, so subtract 20-30% for those. 300 miles rapidly turns into 200 miles when its cold. Add some acceleration runs and you're down to 150 miles.
@@alexnutcasio936 First of all EPA range is a joke. Tesla for instance never beat their their EPA range while cars like Taycan, E tron beat their EPA range by like 20-25% WLTP range is more accurate. Indeed range depends on factors like temperature, tyres etc no matter EVs. But EQS in the best condition is one of the first EV with the longest range beside Lucid. It also the most aerodynamic mass produced car ever.
@@jonpetter8921 All of what you said does nothing to increase range, however. It's well known that Porsche and Audi were conservative on their estimates, BUT that doesn't change the fact that HVAC, tyres, acceleration etc all eat into the range of any BEV. Turn the heat on in that Lucid and you're going to lose 20-30% of its range depending on ambient temperature and cabin settings.
It'd be really funny and/or beneficial if you flipped your cameras, so the closer one is just your whole face and the other one is for the hood view. I would even make your whole face as a background to the hood view footage. haha
Last comment! Promise! The thump thump of race mode is for thrills. However the tightening of the belt is not. Its the pretensioning system reacting to G's All AMG's pull enough for the system to activate. Its a product of better safety engineering.
I wish somebody bould figure out how to show the augmented-reality displays. Love going along on these reviews with you Kyle. Next best thing to being there. One day in about 10 years I'll be in a position to get my first BEV. In the meantime I will keep on watching these videos.
41:07 Maybe helpful, maybe not, but I get really bad tension headaches, so I logged my diet alongside when I got headaches and discovered that on days when I ate foods with sodium nitrate in the ingredients, I got a headache the following day. It might be worth trying the same to see if you can identify a specific trigger.
I've heard many on RU-vid recommend carbon ceramic brakes, but watching your video makes me think they are not good for general daily use? Some RU-vidrs seem to think that everyone is on the track 90% of the time and as such their recommendations can be off, wondering if that's the case with carbon ceramic brakes.
@@abraxastulammo9940 what about Europe ? For example :) and you know that the tesla superchargers are always up and running lets be honest lets not talk about the infotainment
Kyle you and the team make some great videos. I can't get into a 160k + car I will never afford even used. I watched to 13 minutes and turned it off. Looking forward to the next video.
26:22 You have no idea how important this kind of technology really feels to me. These systems that can safely stop a car.....THATS WHAT I LOVE. TESLA SUCKS AT THIS AND THIS IS THE VERY VERY FIRST MERCEDES VEHICLE THAT actually makes me want to get the Mercedes ev. This is the only vehicle with that kind of tech that I think for the shape and what it's built for and what it is.. I know I'm maybe exaggerating or just a bit hyped up from seeing this but.....this is a good car. If you've got the money for it and you've got the money to keep it in good condition please....go green. That car will keep you pretty darn safe. I dont mind living on the edge in a metal deathtrap of an electric conversion nissan cube but seeing that cars out there will do something LIKE THAT......that brings a smile to my face. Screw tesla autopilot ok. There i said it. Tesla autopilot is overfricken rated. Mercedes ......you got a thumbs up from me this time and it hopefully wont be the last after this ev! Keep it up. Safety 10/10. Wonderful software.
Now as for the people that drive that stupid AMG around on car crushers 2 in Roblox. The green amg......the track one.....i HATE THAT with all my guts. Maybe if I get behind the wheel of one in real life maybe that might change but with the horrible experience I get from being knocked clean off the map every single time by these jerks that brag about how good they are even though the vehicles just overpowered......i prefer this over the racing machine. This is why I kind of hate Mercedes but it's kind of a bias because of roblox but meh.....i like jeep wrangler over the g wagen class anyway
go green? i hope thats a joke. 68% of the battery is cobalt, mined in the Congo with child labor and ZERO pollution control. and thats just the tip of the embedded cost iceberg.
Nice review! I'm not provoked by your hair length. When I was much younger than today, almost all men your age were long-haired 😊Love the Mercedes history. They still make one of the not cheapest, but best cars..
Touching your hair is just your trademark Kyle. I don't mind it at all. Sorry to hear about the migranes. I used to get them a lot too, but it got better after i started taking a daily multi vitamin pill. Also seemed to help that i stopped laying down in the couch. I try to sit upright until it's sleeping time.
You don't need 3 types of the same car, most especially at this price point! There should be only the amg model, and just call it the EQS. This engine variant shenanigans needs to end!
What do you mean "it's not the best looking car in its class..."? It's the only EV in the luxury saloon class right now, as far as I'm aware. So it's both the worst and best looking one in its class.
@@Aggie4life77 Well, I'd say I like the _looks_ of the BMW i7 more. I don't like it sharing its platform with the combustion engine car, that just sounds ... wrong. But the car's looking good, certainly.
It seems like a 2 cylinder 95 HP car would reach 60 mph faster than these launch control cars (from turning on the ignition) because it takes so long to get into launch control mode. Launch control speed is strictly for drag racing which 99% of the buyers of SUVs and regular EVs wouldn't have any interest in.
He compares the two in his previoues review of the normal EQS. As i remember he said the EQS beats the Lucid on luxury. Suspension, sound insulation, interior etc.
An additional luxury feature of the EQS is the 400 volt battery architecture, which by definition will soon allow it to DC fast charge at Tesla Superchargers, versus the 900 volt architecture Lucid will be charge-speed limited due to the current limitations of its built in 400 volt to 900 volt booster circuitry. As much as I love the Lucid, I need to be able to properly charge at a Tesla Supercharger when taking a road trip.
The first thing I turn off in my Mercs is the lane crossing warning its annoying as hell you quickly find out its a complete nuisance since everyone crosses the lane lines in normal driving all the time! BTW Im also in the too much info camp for the HUD. The GLS has a similar HUD (huge but without virtual reality) and I keep it with the minimum info.
@Matt P I have a 2021 model 3 long range, I believe it’s worth 50k. It’s the best experience, next to sky diving that I’ve had in recent years. 500 will come once solid state batteries are made for ev. The price will go down eventually. Will it be $30k for 500 miles? Unlikely. $30k for 300 miles is more expected in the next 5-10 years.
@@calvinweimers7614 No, it’s a shit car, compared to vehicles of the same caliber, significantly lower price. Only a fool would employ the “can’t afford” excuse on this one. You like wasting money on inferior products I see.
I will admit that I have been with most people that this car doesn’t look great. Overtime though, I’m growing more and more to liking it. It’s two things that bother people. It doesn’t look like a traditional Mercedes and they always show it with the wrong wheels. This AMG variant with the 22 inch wheels look so much better! 20 inch wheels on this car look too small. Also, you have to get with the times and understand that the design language of these EV’s will be different from what we are use to.
So I have a question. Is it really so difficult to just integrate an all electric powertrain into the S-class, instead of putting a bunch of cool technology and interior features into a car that's fugly? I'm asking in sincerity because admittedly I'm not an automotive engineer, but it just seems like all auto manufacturers (not just picking on Mercedes but theirs is the most pricey) seem to think electric cars are synonymous with awful exterior styling and appearance? Why? I'm sure the EQS is a wonderful car and has a great personality, but I'm shallow. Please don't judge me.
Aerodynamics needed to minimise drag and maximise range is far more important in electric vehicles than ICE cars. Also i don't consider the normal S class Mercedes to be a good looking car anyway.
Interior is Beautiful! Car is Ugly, styling looks weak.. here's a tip , Take the E63s body and drop this interior and drivetrain in... done!. what is wrong with these car companies? .
It looks like a full sized Ford Taurus to me. These big behemoth inefficient cars with huge batteries ain't gonna save any planets. Please discuss battery mfg and basic chemistry for comparison. The 4 wheel steer seems nice. The high regen is great as long as it doesn't kill the battery life.
