There are lots of sharks in Bali 👀...
I attached a GoPro to a cage full of shark bait, and dropped it deep in the Bali Sea to see if we could record some big, rare sharks. There were sharks and big predatory fish (triggerfish, trevally, snappers) everywhere, and we managed to find three new species on my hit list. The bait cage also got attacked by a massive titan triggerfish. This episode is full of scuba diving and shark action, you don’t want to miss it…
Shark Cam Series | Episode: 5
I’m scuba diving and dropping baited cameras every week on remote coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific in search of big, elusive sharks on my hit list, and to see what else is hiding in the deep! I’ll be uploading footage from the best drops every week. Subscribe if you want to see what we find!
So far, we’ve recorded:
✅ Mola Alexandrini (Ocean Sunfish)
✅ Marbled Stingray
✅ Brownbanded Bamboo Shark
✅ Pelagic Thresher Shark
✅ Mangrove Whipray
✅ Tahitian Stingray
❓ New species on this episode 👀
❓… oh and another
❓… yep, and another!

It's an impressive experiment, fish behave so differently when they're not disturbed by our presence, and seeing what turns up is half the fun. I reckon you get a bait cage made up from stainless steel, but it's cool to see how powerful the Trigger was on it. I'm curious to hear more about what got you started on this journey of discovery, what's your background?

Cool video, definitely subscribing 🤙. You could try adding a layer of wire mesh around the bait cage as an extra layer of protection, might save you the headache of having to redo the cage every time the titan gets hungry😄

Hey bro! Great to have you on board!! I have thought about a metal cage - the issue with where I am is finding good quality mesh that a) is built well enough that the titan won't be able to break it, and b) won't rust instantly and fall apart. I'll keep thinking 🤔 Let me know if you have any other ideas though, and thanks for the support 🙌

Hey Barny, thanks again for the great video! You're editing is getting so good! The whole production of your videos seems so professional and well made. I'm so glad I found your channel. When you said "I hope we can find the camera later" I started wondering if you have ever lost one?

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Lots to improve on, but I'm glad you're enjoying the episodes :) what's your favourite bit? dropping the cameras and the diving? reviewing the footage? ... I did have a camera stolen once, but I've since learnt my lesson and now make them more difficult for others to find and remove 🤦‍♂️ I'm sure it'll happen again at some point, but that's the nature of the game 👀

@@barnydillarstone I'm honestly loving the way this video right here was made. Like a mixture between the dives and the drops, it keep the video from becoming repetitive. In my opinion you could make the videos even longer and drop maybe some more trivia about certain species you film and explain their place in the ecosystem. But I'm sure others would like the videos to be shorter and more dramatic. I'm sure you'll find a good format and I will be watching anything you upload if you keep up with the quality content. I'm not saying this to kiss your a** but your channel has become one of my favourites on YT even in the few videos you have posted so far. I'm sure if you keep up the good work you'll have a big audience in a short time. I'm actually kind of surprised your channel seems to be growing kind of slow, but I'm sure the algorithm will get there eventually. I'm doing my part by recommending your channel and videos to friends and I'm happy to be here from so early on. I have also lost a GoPro in the past. My boat capsized on the bank of a river when a friend jumped in a little too enthusiasticly and by the time we had secured the boat and our stuff, the GoPro was long gone. I dived for it a bit but the water was too quick and murky to find anything.

@@helgo719 thanks for the great feedback! Yep, I think one of the challenges with the baited camera drops is capturing enough footage underwater when we're deploying the camera (which as you can imagine is pretty stressful) and telling a good story. I am actually investing in an underwater audio recording unit, which will allow me to give you much better insight into what happens underwater, and provide more live commentary (which I think will be awesome!!). Noted re longer uploads - I'm keen to make them a bit longer and add in more info about the species we record and find on the drops. Really appreciate the support. It's honestly great to hear that you're loving the content and genuinely really motivates me to make more videos and keep improving. I think a big challenge for me at the moment is that this content is quite unique and the algorithm hasn't yet quite worked out who the best audience is - I'm sure we'll get there, and I want to grow this channel properly rather than chase quick, low value views. Keep the feedback coming - it's always welcome 👊 Sorry to hear about your gopro 🤦‍♂you're a diver then?

@@barnydillarstone I'm not a diver, I was just on the river in a canoe. My gandpa was a diver so I have some knowledge about the topic. I'd love to try it one day and I am thinking about getting a diving license. I must admit tho, that diving where I live (State of Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany) doesn't really seem too appealing. My family does however have connections to a small Island in the north sea called Helgoland (after which I am named aswell). I would just LOVE to dive there one day. There's big kelp forests around the island because the waters are pretty shallow and there's a rugged rocky seafloor so it attracts a lot of life. There's big populations of two different seal species, aswell as lots of seabirds that nest in the 60m high red sandstone cliffs of the island. It really is a spectacular place. Unfortunatly lots of the underwater wildlife has vanished from there in the past 5 decades. There used to be big populations of haddock and cod which vanished completely due to overfishing aswell as dogfish and other sepcies of cartilaginous fish like rays and so on. There probably are still some out there but they have become really rare.

What is the popping and cracking sound you hear under the water. I "snorkel" a lot mainly in lakes in the Oregon area of the US. But I have been a few times in the Ocean (Maui) and in the ocean I can hear this popping and cracking (that you can hear in this video) What is it?
@barnydillarstone
@barnydillarstone 3 месяца назад
Great question, Trevor! The popping and cracking is actually just the collective sounds of the tens of thousands of creatures on the reef, from the clicking pistol shrimps to the purring damselfish. It’s crazy how loud it is!! I believe I’m right in saying a lot of noises are used for communication, hence why having boats roar overheard on reefs across the globe isn’t great. It’s depressing how loud boat engines are even at 40m underwater. Very jealous of your Maui snorkelling trips! What did you spot there?

Bro this is such clickbait. There was what 2 sharks in this video and you didn’t even show the last one? It was a cool video but you didn’t haft to say “sharks everywhere” because that’s not what happened at all.

I see the potential in your videos and enjoy them just don’t want to watch another clickbaiter RU-vid’s full of them already I think people are starting to get attracted to genuine RU-vidrs because this clickbait format is just getting old and worse in my opinion but hey I could be wrong man.

@@jstizzy60 no need to apologise, feedback is always welcome and I appreciate you taking the time to tell me how you think I can improve. Completely agree that the title needs to accurately reflect what's in the video and not be misleading. I guess I'm just used to not seeing many sharks round here so picking up half a dozen on the cameras got me all excited 😂😂 Thanks for watching and keep the feedback coming 👊
