@@l1233799 + has compatible frequencies. I know the 4G bands can be different in different locations ... I have no clue whether it covers the Canadian ones.
Too bad its europe exclusive. The fairphone 4 didn't work that well on North American carriers, so if the fairphone 5 is similar, I wouldn't recommend it for him.
@@Samstercraft77 I might have missed it, but I don't think he mentioned price range too, and I'm pretty sure something like a US$40k Metavertu Himalaya would fit the requirements ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I totally agree, makes sense also to pair it with Framework laptop and a bit ironic (Fairphone not available in NA, whereas Framework not available in EU) but a solid combo for sure.
+1 for Xperia. I preferred Xperia phones back since 2011 until they kept putting prices up and up and up till its way out of my league. I still have good memories with my Z1 Compact.
The only smartphone on the market that i know of with top tier spec AND headphone jack + SD card support. The crazy camera control is also a nice plus.
Judging by all your preferences you stated, I feel like your best match would probably be an S23 Ultra. Though, I also think the Fairphone 5 is a good idea like everyone else is saying. Personally though, I think it would be really funny if you used an iPad Mini with cellular.
If the community gets him an Ultra he'll keep it and it'll do all the things he wants. Even though I main an iPhone 14 Pro and love it, I'm still very attached to my S23 Ultra.
except the fairphone isn't properly available in North America. it can be imported and might be usable, but it'll very likely have frequent(though maybe bearable) cellular connection issues. might be interesting to see Linus try and give a review on how well it works in Canada. (i've used the international version of the LG G8S ThinQ in the US and frequently had issues, but it was still mostly usable, but I'm not a power phone user like Linus).
New Xperia line up has everything. Good Screen for watching show and reading, Great camera, Have dedicated shutter button, Good Video, charge pretty fast, good screen has audio jack and good wireless, its nice on hand pretty snappy I've daily driven Xperia 5 Mark 3 for more than a year its the best phone i have
Fairphone is probably the smart choice here, as others have rightfully pointed out. For an interesting oddball runner-up, I'll suggest a phone that LTT might not even be able to obtain (or use in Canada), but that would make for an amazing piece for both the main channel as well as for LTT labs to toy with - Samsung's S23 Tactical Edition. It's ruggedized, has night vision/low light capture modes, features like full radio disable, as well as Software Defined Radio support, VPN chaining and other doodads. It's just an interesting piece of hardware in and of itself. Toss it through a test gauntlet, see if it's as tough as they say it is.
Fairphone is not really a good choice outside of the EU. You will have to rely on resellers for the phone (which means higher prices and no warranty) and any replacement parts, and you will have no recourse if it turns out the phone doesn’t support the frequencies on NA cellular companies.
Pls go with the phone (2) by nothing. I've had it for a while and it's insanely fast, hard as a rock, resistant to the heaviest of rain and gets LOTS of love by the devs (meaning you wont have any problem w how it reacts with the ecosystem, car etc.) . The only downside is the the camera, which isn't bad but not remarkable either
I'm interested in hearing Linus give us his hands-on experience with the Fairphone 5. I want to know if the drawbacks that come from the reparability are a deal-breaker over a longer period of time.
My top 2 choices are the Fairphone 5 and the Pixel 8. I feel like most tech reviewers don't give these devices as much time of day. I'd also love to see Linus try to repair the Pixel 8 with parts from iFixit. I hope he goes with a phone that doesn't get a lot of focus and tests the longevity of the device. I want to see if people would be interested in the smaller Pixel getting a long term review for once.
I would add if money is no object than the 512GB Pixel Fold should be in the conversation as well since the unlocked version has all the major North American bands, it has the large screen he would like, since he hates replacing phones unless he must, the long term support of the Pixels is very good, and the chipset will be better in the long run vs. the Fairphone which uses a lower specd SOC originally meant for IOT devices.
"My top 2 choices are the Fairphone 5" Did everyone regurgitating this trashy phone just not watch the video? Is this another one plus wave of fanboyism for a brand? This phone doesn't suit his needs, which he ever so clearly defined in the video.
@@Death-999 it's not a perfect fit but it's a phone Linus will dig into and meets a lot of his niche interests. It would also make for really good content which would help the video.
Ive seen 3 fairphone comments and I'd have to agree with them. Its definitely an interesting phone to check out but its definitely not like the fold unfortunately
Either buy the nothing phone 2 ( I wouldn’t buy it myself) or buy the Xperia Sony. Headphone jack is there. Great camera. The battery life is awesome. USB c transfer speeds are quick. 120 hrtz display with variable refresh rate. ( let me make sure it has it and I’ll edit this to just say yes. ) great dac. Headphone jack wise and Alac.
Just in time for the Pixel 8 pro showcase. Massive selling point, 7 years of not only support and OS upgrades, but all the feature drops as well. It's a flagship pixel, so it has nearly every other thing you could imagine, except a 3.5 jack of course.
Nearly every thing I could imagine? It has: no 3.5 jack, no microsd, no easily replaceable battery, a fragile back (glass), no IR blaster, no charger in the box, no extreme fast charging, not a lot of customisation, punch-hole camera, no iris scanner, no useful gimmicks (thermal camera). I know I ask for a lot of features, but these all are things you would appreciate having in a phone and might find useful. I would appreciate any of them myself, and listed them roughly in order of personal importance.
@@leonro good luck finding a good phone with those requirements. The closest you can get is the ASUS Zenfone 10, which although is an amazing phone and my second choice after the Pixel, has a mere 2 years of support.
@@eesanta Yeah, I know there's no phone that satisfies all of them. That's why I even made an "according to importance" list. I don't think the Asus is the most complete option though, because it doesn't have a lot of those features other than headphone jack. Funnily enough, I think the most comprehensive phones would be some of those cheaper chinese ones, as they feature almost everything except for a replaceable battery or interesting gimmicks. No water resistance (or weak resistance) and no wireless charging will be found there however. Sony phones are also quite feature rich, although they still don't have a replaceable battery (or many features further down the list), and they are quite expensive.
@@mola1.980 its not waterproof 😂 jokes aside fairphone still does not compare to same priced other brands. Sometimes its more about what you get for the money. I believe on his phone are running a lot of apps in the background which pretty much cant be handled smooth with an SDqcm6490 and 8gb ram
yes! i really want one but the ff5 isnt launching in the USA (yet, hopefully). him doing a review / daily driving it will get the word out and draw more attention to it! really looking forward to when it releases since my current phone (oneplus 6) is on its last legs, and i would love a de-googled android phone that is repairable into the far off future
I would love to see your take on the latest iPhone 15 pro or pro max as you have been on android for the last five years and ios has been heavily upgraded since 2017!
I really like my Pixel 7pro and they just came out with a new one which will lower the price of this one. It's super snappy and Google lens has helped me more times than I thought. It has BOTH fingerprint AND face ID. And since the fingerprint sensor is in the screen it is invisible and still works even with wet hands. It has been very fast on North American bands and the battery lasts all day. It has an always on screen mode and you can reduce the screen from 1440 144hz to 1080 120hz to reduce battery usage. The display is very vibrant and it comes in fun colors. The telephoto lens allows for up to 30x zoom that still looks sharp, and it also has great stabilization at that zoom as well. It is on the newest android version as well.
Would love to see the fairphone 5 It doesn't have a glass back so it should be resistant to dropping it, its also fast enough and I'm curious about the repairability
A phone that's really been quietly excellent is he Asus Zenphone, long battery, compact size, and just a really good experience overall. Not enough market is put into it in the west for it to be on everybody's mind, but it hits a lot of Linus' points
Considering the investment in Framework, its mobile counterpart would be a Fairphone (minus the upgradeability of course) But many already picked up on that and it seems to be the most popular on reddit It doesn't have stereo speaker though, but it checks all the other soft requirements Other than that, my experience with many brands got me back to Samsung cause they ultimately are the most popular android brand and it's the most important factor when it comes to support, parts availability (and cost) and accessories compatibility. So I would say the cheapest Samsung that checks all the boxes would be the best choice. A mid tier option is more than enough for most people nowadays (and most of them still have an headphone jack !), and less power hungry cpu on a 4000 or 5000mah battery makes it last for days while still having good performance. But it all depends on how you use your phone and maybe a power user would push that hardware near 100% while a top tier chip at 50% would make the same battery last longer
The shortlist of phones he should consider: - Samsung xCover 6 Pro (Actually Linus-proof, runs the same One UI skin he prefers, 5-Year support, waterproof AND has a User Removable Battery) - Sony Xperia 1 mk V (one-handed, waterproof, headphone jack, great software, flagship specs all-round) - iPhone 15 Max (best Apple phone right now, actually not the worst option) - Samsung Fold Z3 (comfort choice, going back to what he had, he likes foldables, they're super fragile, but he is rich enough to keep replacing them) Do not consider: - Google Pixel 8 Pro (lots of issues from bugs, quality issues, battery, and very fragile, it's always over hyped) - Fairphone 5 (great support, slowish, poor cameras, is NOT water resistant, will not age well for Linus usecase) - Samsung S23 Ultra (not bad option, Linus has small hands, very heavy, shockingly fragile, being discontinued and replaced soonish) - ASUS ROG Phone 6 (poor camera quality, weak support, Linus isn't a phone gamer) - Motorola RAZR 40 Ultra (has USB 2.0, not durable, certain downgrades throughout) - OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Redmi, Xiaomi, Meizu, Nubia, ZTE, HTC, Lenovo, Honor, Huawei, etc etc (questionable hardware, pretty poor software builds and support, not worth the trouble unless you want best value for money, Linus does not have such monetary limitations)
@@ekintekour short listed phones are good except for Sony Xperia 1 V (change it to something linus size {Xperia 5 V}). And if u see the voting in Reddit fairphone 5 is actually many people are voting for. Second is Lg wing and third is Sony Xperia 1V.
@@febrockzzT Thanks for the update. Yeah, lots of people don't know phones too well, so I'm not surprised the recommendations here aren't that wise. Are there any phones you would recommend, or what is your realistic shortlist for Linus ? As for the Sony 5 mk V, it's got better battery life and one-handed use.... but I think Linus personally would get tired of it quickly for its slightly smaller display. Besides if you wanted the best flagship experience in the smallest device, it's not possible to do better than the discontinued iPhone 13 Mini. Also the cameras on that aren't the same/as good as the one that's on the Sony 1 mk V. Personally, if the display was better (ie NOT using 3K) I would get one myself, but the battery life is very average for such an expensive phone and the display is the main culprit.
Pixel 8 Pro. Comes out this week. I have the 6 and previously had the 3XL. They've all had excellent camera quality, excellent support, highly reliable, no extra fluff because it's native Google, consistent security updates, and from a business owner perspective it simply works for everything I need them to. It's fast for everything I throw at it, and it's not too clunky.
The pixel 8 probably should be something to consider and the thinkphone by motorola is pretty cool. It's made with aramid fiber and could take drops so you should be able to run it caseless.
@@_Pt3k_ do you know if they will upgrade the fingerprint sensor, one of my biggest gripes in the 7 is that the fingerprint reader only worked 50% of the time. With my new phone it's up to 95%
I would recommend the samsung s23 ultra as it has 12gb of ram so it can handle everything that you throw at it and also it has a custom snapdragon core that rips through gaming and work loads like it's nothing. As I own this phone I can say it is amazing, even better than the iphone 15 Pro max by far, it has gorilla glass aswell do it will be harder to crack the screen. And it has a QLED screen that has a much higher definition than oled. It can shoot 200mp photos and it can do 8k video at 30 fps this phone is a beast
Oh man, I finally upgraded to the Z Fold 5 from the Note 9 because my phone battery was not reliable enough. And my god, the productivity increase and the appreciation of being able to read documents off the screen and easily share it with my health team was a surprise.
I would recommend the Zenphone 10 from Asus. It's got the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and I believe it can go up to 16GB of ram and a Headphone Jack! The software is basically stock android and you have the option to set it as that but the ASUS optimized version is basically just as stock just with some optemized features like how the inbuilt shortcuts built into the power button (I think) It has a soft touch plastic back and a really big battery. It's 5.9 inch screen makes it really easy to use and has a fingerprint scanner with two amazing cameras with in built OIS. The one downside is the two years of software support compared to the other's 3-4 years.
Truly interested to see how many people actually recommend something that's different from the phone/operating system that they use. It's got to be a new Fold, though. I don't use one myself, but maintaining the productivity workflows from the large screen seems like a huge positive.
Id love to see Linus run something truly weird like one of the newer Built-in FLIR thermal camera phones. He would absolutely make great use of the thermal camera even if the other cameras won't be as flagship as he might be used to
Hes had his Fold 3 for a couple of years, no way could he easily adjust to a regular 'candy bar' phone after that. I know I couldn't and I've had the Fold 4 just 1 year. You get really used to its size and the flexibility it affords you.
@@ronaldojoe3011 But a Pixel 8 Would check all of those boxes also, the s23 ultra is a great phone, but with the extra AI features Google offers it could give greater benefit to his workload. (by no means am I saying the S23 is a bad choice either, I think it would really depend on what other features not mentioned in the video he may want. both phones will meet all the requirements set out and even the extra nice to have things.)
But man I get it. I still absolutely deny to upgrade my 3-4 year old phone as long as it just works.. Because the upgrade would be an absolute nightmare with all the apps you gotta migrate these days. So I am waiting for a "deadly" failure for my phone as well.. wont upgrade before^^
Fold 5 or S23 Ultra seems like a great choice since the screen size should both satisfy his excel usages. They both have serviceable cameras, pretty good battery life, plus I do believe that once you go foldable it's quite hard to go back to regular candybar devices and not feel a bit dissatisfied.
only Linus would dive into a pool like that. I would have just been like "oh.." and try to find something to pull it out with. then let them dry in the sun a while, and if it works again, it works.. if not.. just let them be a while longer, and use something else as a replacement temporarily.. !
Honestly I'd go with the highest model of whatever pixel is newest. Had a 3 for a long time and have had zero problems with it, camera is great, and incredible interconnectivity with my desktop and laptop. You could also get a pixel fold if you really want the folding display. Camera is really high quality too.
Try the Sony Xperia 1V. If the back button is still a deal breaker use the gesture controls. Works really well for me. Gorilla Glass victus II + laser edged back for better grip. Dedicated camera button with half click for focus. 21:9 design gives me the best of small and big phones. Creature mode provides perfect colors.
I would love to see Linus with GrapheneOS. This is the OS Snowden recommend. Full Google Play Store support but the Apps run in a sandbox. Runs best on Google Pixel.
It's on the high end, but I love the Xperia 1 V I got a few months ago. It has a lot of the nice to haves, like quick camera access with a dedicated shutter button, a 3.5mm jack, a true 4k display for video, and would probably stomp all over the iPhone 13 for video quality.
What year is this where mr tech tips uses a cable to back up photos to his server? 2010 Set up SyncThing. Backing things up from devices to a sever is super easy, fast and automatically works whenever your phone is on the same network. My photos end up on my server and laptop. I can take a picture on my phone, and as long as my laptop is awake, the full resolution picture is there before I sit down. I also backup important documents this way as well. It also works over a VPN so I can back pics up while on vacation, or access files while away.
Honestly, I feel like with the requirements you given it would be better for you to offer a list of phones that fit that criteria, (all five of them probably) and then have us pick from those, so seeing as you didn't, I'm just going to throw out my suggestion. My wife and friends have used Doogee's for years now and never has one broke. (also, they use the official thickness of gorilla glass as opposed to, gorilla glass 5, but not as thick as its supposed to be) So, try a Doogee V31GT, S100, or v20 Pro. Whichever you like best.
I think he will like the Google pixel fold. It seems like he was enjoying his samsung fold so having a Google fold will be much better for smaller hands and the 6 years of support isn't half bad either
It would be interesting to see what a long time Android user thinks of the new iphone 15 pro, but I also think the fairphone would be neat to see. and one last idea, the Galaxy flip 5, how is it going from fold to flip Whatever you choose, it will be interesting to see
People only want to see the Fairphone because of the repairability, and the claims of long support, but the SOC based on all I've seen on it won't hold up as well long term given it was originally meant for IOT devices, vs. something like a Pixel 7/8, or Pixel Fold with 512GB of storage if money is no object as it's almost 2 grand USD. Lastly Ifixit has the parts to fix the pixel line of phones if he ever needs it.
Let's put it this way, I bought two note9s after watching linus's video, and although I kinda wanted to buy a folding screen phone to try it out, and this year's fold5 was good, I just didn't have the urge to buy it, and this year's S23 Ultra, especially the black one, the moment I got it in my hands in the store, my instincts told me "don't fxxking hesitate, this is the phone for you! ", and it turns out I'm happy with it so far, even though I came from the Apple family bucket without any discomfort. So linus, come back you note boy!!!(no, it should be Ultra boy now).
Probably good opportunity for an iPhone, you already know everything about Android from daily driving it. I'd love to see your experience with the transitional costs of moving to the apple ecosystem.
My vote has got to go to an lg wing. Im pretty sure it just got a pretty recent Android version and the unique form factor would be interesting to compare to the fold that Linus has been using.
Seeing a detailed review of the Fairphone and Linus daily driving it will be good, but if I'm honest if I'm getting a Phone for myself now it would probably be a Pixel.
IF you’re even considering an iPhone, your only real choice is the iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max for the high speed USB transfer speeds - but you knew that 😊
Not a suggestion, but you mentioned the love of the iPhone 6s and I gotta say the 6s was the phone I had the longest and it was excellent. I kept it until it broke and it didnt make sense to get it fixed so I got an 11. Huge upgrade, but I gotta say the 6S was so strong for such a long time. My 11 has screen issues and I dont really feel like fixing it so I am also in the boat of getting a new phone as well. Most likely going to stick with Apple and just go for a last gen phone.
I'm still using a 6s+ I got right around when it first launched. Have had to get the battery replaced around last year, but other than that it's still kicking. Getting no more updates past iOS 15 will eventually become an issue tho once apps stop supporting 15.
This is gonna win cause not enough people know about it but the only phone I can think of that matches all your requirements is the Redmagic 8 pro+ it has everything you asked for and the camera is average but it still takes respectable photos for a phone. Comes with google and all that. Has fast usb c transfer speeds. Fast touch screen. Full screen display etc…
Fairphone is not a good phone, even if it has the incredibly long life and reparability I doubt anybody will be wanting to buy new parts in a few years, plus they removed the headphone jack (and they suddenly started making bluetooth earbuds and headphones) and has pretty bad hardware
But it doesn't satisfy ground rule 3. I've no idea how so many people just missed that. I mean theoretically it could work but it only supports some of the required bands, which is something no one mentions.
I love to see a good chunk of the community suggesting the Fairphone 5. I think everybody likes the concept, but the phones are just always a bit too inferior and pricey, although I think the 5 might be a turnaround. Would love to see a long term review
Fairphone. I get that the challenge is to pick a phone that fulfills what he wants, but that would also be a great move from the community imo. Also, that pool clip was hilarious.
I literally came here to comment Fairphone, am so pleased it is on top. I'm using a fair phone right now, and it works fine on t-mobile/mint. Murena is the main way to buy it in the US, which does NOT have play store support, but it isn't too difficult to either have the Original Fairphone shipped from Europe, or to simply install fair phone OS on a Murena fairphone (what I did.) I actually highly recommend fair phone. Being able to swap out the battery by itself sets it apart. If you use Murena, you basically get q bulletproof ad blocker built into the OS itself which is amazing.
As a daily user of an lg v30, and a guy who keeps his guard up (and thus am still on android...7? Haven't updated in YEARS), the relatively slow processor doesn't bother me...often.

I'd love to see Linus try the Fairphone 5. Especially as I haven't seen a long term review yet, and I'm very curious how the Fairphone would be in day to day use.
Its garbage in disguise. No one cares about an processor that lasts long, it will lack performance in long term anyways. And those replacablre parts aren’t cheap. idk how people are getting brainwashed this easily by good sounding shit deals.
I wen't to their website to check pricing, but they didn't have a country selector in the drop down list for Canada or USA. Then I saw this (from fairphone website): The Fairphone 5 is headed to Europe and the U.K. later this month, but there are no plans for a release in North America
I think either Zenfone 10/9 or a Fairphone 5 would fulfill many of the requested features he's mentioned, i might have to do similarly in the not too distant future depending on how long i can stretch my OnePlus 6 out for
As a Framework investor, the right answer feels like Fairphone5 or Nothing 2 - they don't meet every requirement but have repairability and the future in mind
yeah i am quite interested in the nothing @@brokhan8522 - I've always been on pure pixel android and hated my Samsung experience so loath going to something modified but the overall reasoning for decisions seems sound for them unlike Samsung
no just no He should go with the iPhone 15 it has all the things he needs and has usb-c for fast data transfer altough it doesnt have a folding screen so maybe thet fold 5 is the way to go?
I vote for the fairphone because repairability was so important to you, that you invested in Framework. there should be no argument for not going the same route for a phone.
