Oh wow, that was one of the vehicles I was assigned to drive during my service in Germany during the 1960's. Great little 'go anywhere' armoured scout car that was really fun to drive.

I almost bought one of these! I live in NJ, and, they are perfectly legal to drive on the street here, too. It has all the necessary lights, it has tires, instead of tracks, and, it's small enough to fit in your garage. A Ferret is a really good starting vehicle for anyone who wants to start an AFV collection.

The Official name for this is a Ferret Scout Car. These were an interesting vehicle, they were made by Daimler, powered by a 6 cylinder Rolls-Royce engine and had a Wilson preselector gearbox (a common gearbox for many Daimler vehicles of the time). What Doug refers to as the clutch was actually called the ''change pedal''. The idea was that you selected the gear you wanted ahead of the change, then as you needed to change you pushed the change pedal and the gearbox changed to the required gear. Driving one is a bit like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. It was widely used and indeed is still in service in a few countries.

When I was a kid in the sixties I lived next to a Territorial Army base, Frenchman's Fort, and they had a few Ferrets. You could be in the next street and know a Ferret was driving along by the distinctive noise. There was a large field where the TA used to practice recovering tanks. The tanks were Churchills and when the soldiers had gone home we used to play in the tanks. One of my friends dropped a hatch onto his foot and chopped off a couple of toes. The hatches were welded shut after that. Happy days.

He totally missed a lot of the "quirks and features" like the fact that it's got a Rolls-Royce engine, permanent four-wheel-drive and run-flat tyres. The Ferret was highly successful and is still in use with quite a few militaries around the world.

My dad actually wrote one of these off when he was in the army. He was patrolling in pitch-black darkness on a patrol when he was stationed in Northern Ireland in the 80-90's. He claims that he was in a convoy with only the lead vehicle's spotlight for any sort of illumination, there were ditches to either side of the road they were on, he came off the road and drove it into one of the ditch, snapping the front axel and damaging the chassis. Made me think about how armoured they actually are lmao

One of my dad's close friends was an officer in the British Army in the 1960s and 70s. The Ferret was his go-to transport - he remembered one time where the driver accidentally clipped a parked van on a street in Oxford, and opened it up like a sardine can.

Just showed this to my Grandad who served in the Royal Engineers in the British Army during the Suez Crisis in Egypt and this video bought back a lot of fond memories for him. He was a passenger in not one but two of these Ferrets when then driver rolled them off a verge and off the road into luckily a small drop due to such poor driver visibility. None the less he says they we’re loved by all!
