Mercedes-Benz has made significant strides in the plug-in hybrid segment with the 2025 GLE 450e, combining the luxury and power associated with the GLE lineup with an eco-friendly plug-in hybrid system.
Performance
The GLE 450e combines traditional Mercedes performance with the efficiency of hybrid technology.
Engine and Powertrain: It’s powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, paired with an electric motor. Together, they produce a combined output of around 375 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This setup allows for strong acceleration (0-60 mph in about 5.5 seconds), while delivering smooth, refined power typical of a luxury SUV.
Electric Range and Battery: The GLE 450e boasts a respectable electric-only range of around 40 miles, ideal for daily commutes or city driving. The battery can be charged via a standard outlet or fast-charging options, which reduces charging time significantly. In hybrid mode, the system seamlessly switches between electric and gasoline power, ensuring optimal efficiency. Mercedes claims a combined fuel efficiency of around 50-60 MPGe when leveraging electric power for short trips.
Drivetrain and Handling: The standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system offers excellent grip and traction in various weather conditions, making the GLE 450e versatile for both urban and off-road use. The SUV’s suspension is smooth, with available air suspension that adapts to different driving modes (Comfort, Sport, Eco) to enhance ride quality. It handles corners with confidence and stability, though the added weight from the hybrid components makes it feel slightly heavier than its non-hybrid siblings.
In the luxury plug-in hybrid SUV segment, the GLE 450e competes against models like the BMW X5 xDrive45e, the Audi Q7 TFSI e, and the Volvo XC90 Recharge.
