I Drove Through Downtown Baltimore. This Is What I Saw.

Whoa - Baltimore's downtown isn't very nice.
For this edition of dashboard tours, I wanted to drive through downtown Baltimore. I had been to Baltimore several times in the past, but most of the areas I had seen were the burned out and crime ridden sections on the northwest side of town. So I exited off of I95 and went into downtown Baltimore on a cloudy morning in late March. It was 10 in the morning.
As you’ve likely heard, Baltimore is one of the worst cities for crime, and even its downtown area has signs of inner city blight. However, before we get to downtown, I wanted to show the bright side to downtown Baltimore. This area is called Fells Point. It’s a very well maintained part of town along the inner harbor with shopping and dining. This is really the only part of downtown where you can feel kinda safe, although the day before I arrived, a woman had disappeared from this very street, and the police were searching for her body in the water.
Now we’re going downtown. Our route is gonna wind through several blocks of business, retail and whatever entertainment Baltimore has in this part of town. Here’s the exact route we’ll be taking. I found downtown to be somewhat quiet, sort of clean, but devoid of any real energy. A lot covid lockdowns and the rioting which took place here seemed to have sapped whatever positive vibe and energy Baltimore’s downtown once had. And while some parts of downtown seemed somewhat inviting, you turn a corner, and you remember you’re in Baltimore again.
Here’s the rest of downtown Baltimore, one of the most dangerous cities in the US.

As someone who goes to BMore all the time... It is the most beautiful, ugly, inspiring, depressing, artistic, stale to life, resilient, hopeless, up and coming, yet stagnant city all in one that I have ever seen, and all parts of her are within an earshot of each other... She's on her knees, and many parts of her are still wounded, but other areas of her body work just fine..She just wants to be aided by genuine caregivers, and have a treatment plan to finally stand again.

I lived in Little Italy for about 5 years between 2010 and 2015 when I was there for work. Little Italy is contiguous to Harbor East and the Inner Harbor and Harbor East is right next to Fells Point. What part didn't you find nice? I thought it was a pretty solid downtown minus the annoying construction. I don't know what day this was recorded on but during the weekends a lot of downtown business districts are dead because people are at home and not working. I drove into Minneapolis on a Sunday afternoon and there wasn't much happening in their downtown either.

As a native Baltimoron I can assure you there are much nicer areas and much worse areas of the city than shown in this video. I don't know what destinations he was putting into his GPS but I kept hearing "you have arrived" at the most random places. I also found it odd how the camera appeared to be aimed directly forward through the enrire video - except when he stopped at a red light on Park Avenue and suddenly the camera pans to the left to show a vacant lot and some graffiti.

Prior to COVID, I felt fairly safe as long as I was there in the daytime. The key is knowing when to leave and then finding the quickest route to Interstate 83 north. The Inner Harbor is awesome and there always seems to be something fun going on there. I've lived outside of Baltimore in the suburb of Catonsville for over 20 years, but going into downtown still scares me at times. I used to work in the Wells Fargo building and thankfully, I don't have to drive there anymore as I found employment outside the city. The only places I would venture to are Fells Point, Inner Harbor, Hampden, and Mount Washington. While Baltimore City may seem gloomy, there are some hidden gems that are worth finding.

I can truly tell that you listen to everything you hear and see on the news. Did you know that every major city in the US has a high crime rate, for example LA, Chi town, NY, NJ, and so on and so on. Baltimore is just as safe as any other major city in the US. Also if you really want to get to know a feel of a city you should has someone who really knows the city show you around. Because from watch this video you missed out on alot. From Federal Hill, Canton, harbor east, little Italy, Camden, Mt. Royal, Mt. Washington, Rolling Park, and etc. There are so many neighborhoods that you neglect to show in this video. If you are going to give tours of cities and try to give people a true representation of a city you really need to get the feel of city by someone who knows the city and that can show you around and take you to all the hidden gems Because just riding around doesn't do nothing but feed into stereo types.

As someone from DC, Baltimore is like our brother that everyone always says “I can’t believe you’re related”. From my understanding, Baltimore grew up being a much more prosperous city than DC but that changed big time. People from DC look down on Baltimore but it has a lot of potential to be the city it once was. Inner Harbor and the areas immediately adjacent to it are nice but as soon as you go a few blocks in, it all changes. And unfortunately it continues for the entire area.

For decades and decades, Baltimore was a teeming productive city a third bigger than Washington. Now the bloated and mostly useless federal government has legitimized the Washington area into thinking it's somehow a viable world class city. It's still the low self esteem town it's always been with a too congested population and infrastructure, while Baltimore is struggling to grasp that life preserver but just doesn't have the will. I don't know about the brother thing. They're not exactly twin cities

D.C. has been shocking me as of late. Take for example New York Avenue coming off of 295. That used to be very rundown, And now they’ve got all those high rises and shops like Target, not to mention that government building at the intersection of Florida Ave. My concern for Baltimore is they’ve been slowly doing the same thing. There’s no way that any of those high rises on New York Ave. are affordable. And it’s like that all over. They say not to drive down Central Ave. East, and I did and wow has that gone high end too. I just see people getting forced out to who knows where and it’s definitely happening in sections of Baltimore like by Hopkins Bayview Hospital and Harbor East/Canton.

Baltimore does indeed have lots of green space, just not shown in this video. Leekin Park for instance is enormous, and it's far scarier as well as more interesting depending on which part you visit and the time and day you visit. There's an old mansion as well as completely cut off roads that they just decided to stop letting you drive down along with old abandoned buildings, cemeteries and sadly many dumped bodies over the years. I grew up around there and have very mixed feelings about Baltimore.

This city has Little Italy, has famous Theatres, history and bones .. it has bars where pop culture lives and breathes.. and a harbor that once glittered at night .. museums and an aquarium.. I feel sad that a rainy day takes a person through the city without a tour .. but since my family passed away I haven't been back there and I guess it's just a memory of Charm City that remains

This video is so misleading. Dude said Fells Point is the only nice area. There is Federal Hill, Harbor East, Harbor Point, Mt Vernon, and Canton. And you also said a woman disappeared from that street. That is wrong, she was in Canton. The rioting was 6 years ago too 😂😂

Beautiful architecture, a once thriving inner harbor, filthy polluted water, trash everywhere, some still beautiful neighborhoods (Canton, Fells, Roland Park, Hamden, et al. But the soul has been ripped out of this city and the beggars and what’s in it for me crowd have taken over.

The problem with Baltimore is that it has so much potential. If some average city like Lubbock or Fort Wayne had Baltimore sized problems, I would say there's no hope for those cities. They just don't have the character that Baltimore has. It's a truly amazing city worth fighting for.

I have to make this comment, I went through downtown Baltimore and this is what I seen (in the early 2000s it was different then when I came here in the late 80s and lived here in the early 70s,but since I moved back here 3 years ago I seen) corrupt government & cops that does nothing, rats as big as house cats, nasty roaches, burned out buildings, residents that are divided based on race, discrimination, homelessness that is out of control, gun violence, and the list goes on. Baltimore MD and the county has as many residents as Worcester MA a city I moved from and Baltimore has so many methadone clinics it's not funny, Baltimore has 6 and Worcester has only 1, this alone tells you how bad Baltimore MD is

You missed some of the real bad sections... Rows of 150 year-old burned out and vacant brick flats, some of them nothing more than completely gutted out and braced shells with thin sheet plastic roofs (like pool covering) and bricked-up/cemented up window openings and doorways, all of which _must_ remain standing to preserve the structural integrity of common front, back, and side walls they share with other occupied flats of similar types... Some of these structures have been that way since the 70s...

I have lived in Baltimore for most of my life. I have seen many many changes in Baltimore. It makes me quite sad. I live in the county now, but when I was a child i lived in the city in a neighborhood called Hamilton. It makes me sadest of all when people ask me where I grew up and I tell them and they say "Hamilton was a nice place to be back then". There is still so very much I love about Baltimore, but the inner city isn't one of them. SORRY.

A little perspective: Baltimore always had some serious problems with violence and crime, at least as far back as the 1850's when anti-immigration Know-Nothing gangs like the Rip Raps ruled its streets, and things got especially dangerous during election season. And apparently, things had gotten so bad during Reconstruction that wealthier citizens started small communities outside the filth and violence of the city, developing places like Glyndon in the 1870's and '80's. And let us not get started on the neighbourhoods that make me think of the year 1904.

Funny thing is people talking shit about how bad it is here pay a visit to other Cities for instance Philadelphia I witnessed open drug markets , trash, and rampant homeless people wandering the streets. I do truck deliveries and had a Police escort follow me so they would not try and take my truck. Before you talk about someone else you should clean up your own yard.

I enjoyed this video! As a native Baltimorean, though, to get the real experience, you have to turn off the GPS and just drive. Over the years I watched the city decline from lack of leadership. I worked in the city several times each week, and last summer was accosted by a squeegee kid in my company van. At that point I decided to retire and leave Maryland altogether. Even Fells Point is a shithole now. Baltimore has lost its traditional middle-class tax base and is now a sad shadow of it's former self. The people elect politicians with no balls, who talk incessantly about crime and do nothing. May Baltimore MD fall into the harbor for all I care.

As much as I wanna say baltimore is a cesspool, there are nice areas and then there are bad areas with drugs and crime. As long as you don't have to rely on public transportation, it can be a charming little city. To think that at one time in history Baltimore was a mecca for commerce and trade. It has a large port, and a thriving industrial sector. ALL in all, I see hope for this city.
@zilksmooth

All these industrial cities just shells of what they once were. Was the savings resulting from outsourcing all of our manufacturing and assembly really worth the price we paid in terms of the welfare, destroyed lives, crime and blight that resulted? No.

well, outsourcing manufacturing was a consequence of the union movement and the modernization of the USA. workers gained rights, got higher wages... and priced themselves too high. when companies found places with lower costs of labor, then they ,logically, had to survive by going to other countries. The american citizen in general benefits from lower prices. There is no perfect reality where we get low prices (and have money left over to pay other bills) and all workers get high wages.
