I drove to remote NUG-AS (Wild, Cold, Sea of Clouds) Rainforest & Red-Soil Farmlands 

Last January 28, 2023 at 4am, I left Mandaue City and travelled almost 120 kms (Mandaue to Mt. Campetra) south of Cebu province to a remote cold mountain in the municipality of Alcoy. The place is said to have more rainfall occurrence than any other place in the entire Cebu island. This is Nug-as, a barangay of Alcoy that is partly composed of agricultural lands and a forest reserve (Protected Area). Home of endangered bird species like the Cebu Black Shama or locally known as "Siloy", the sleek Cebu Hawk Owl and Emerald Pigeons to name some. Maybe hundreds of wild bird species thrive in this vast woodland. Additionally, there are 214 species of wild forest trees that can be found in Nug-as including Cebu Cinnamon Tree. Locals say that there are many wild monkeys that live in Nug-as Forest Reserve. At the foothills of this protected rainforest is a community of farmers that live and till the red lands. They have perfected the skills of farming vegetables passed down from one generation to another. I went to Nug-as, stayed for awhile, talked to local people and went to nearby Mount Campetra which is just 10 minutes from the town's public market. The peak of Mt. Campetra is an attraction that is frequented by city people because of the magical cloud formation usually occurring between 5AM-7AM. Famous for its tagline "Sea of Clouds" which became famous in the social media. I also saw a few "Siloys", the endangered black shama on my way to Nug-as. I was able to recognized them because of their distinct chants. I also confirmed that there are still monkeys in Nug-as Forest and mountains of nearby towns like Badian and Boljoon. Lastly, I was able to look at how vast the rainforest in Nug-as and considered as the largest forest cover in Cebu. It was an experience I will forever cherish and glad sharing it to all of you.
