It is very similar to being a mother parent, and for many years mother is the child's guardian angel protecting from what they themselves do not see the consequences of and kind of training them not to kill themselves and be able to survive.

I've lived in Alaska almost 50 years and have worked all over it including Barrow and Deadhorse and much in between. You are a strong, sweet spirit Eva, the sort of person that has always gravitated to and then stayed here in Alaska. You would do well living somewhere in our great state, there are never enough you's. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Quite by accident I found your channel, lucky me. You bring back some great memories when I was your age and this place was all new. You must come back someday!

yeah, you don't understand the meaning of the word "remote" until you go somewhere like that. I was in Nome, Alaska once, which is supposedly one of the "larger" towns along the northern areas, and I felt like I was on the most remote spot on earth....

Indeed. I got back to Chicago after driving to Deadhorse. I was shopping at a Target and saw a display of globes. I looked up Deadhorse and said "Holy Fu@#" that's on top of the planet!" On a map.....no big deal...on a globe, you get the real perspective.

In March 2014 I was standing in the same location on top of 3 metres of frozen sea ice in the bitter cold and made the same statement that every step here would be a step south to Ushuaia. In May 2016 after 622 days I arrived in Ushuaia and burst into happy tears having travelled 43,000 kilometre…by bicycle. I’ll be watching your adventures with interest. Good luck.

I've just found your channel about 24hrs ago and have watched a few of your videos, mostly since you've gotten Vilk. He has gotten so big and you have done an amazing job at training and raising him. A dog maybe a small part of your life but to them, you are their entire life.

I lived in a small van with two Alaskan huskies for 1,5 years and to be able to fulfill their running needs (as they come from pure working sleddogs lines) my whole driving and in general entire daily schedule revolves around them. I know how limiting it can feel. And at the same time, because of THEM I have gone to the most beautiful locations by accident, searching for a good training trail. So yes, they take up a ton of time (and even more with a puppy!), and they restrict a lot what I can do and where I can go. But the only way thru this is to lean in, to embrace it and see where your journey will take you two where you otherwise wouldn't have gone alone. And do not feel bad spending to much time on the training! First years are the worst, after that your work will pay off big time, because the older the dog gets, the more time they need to learn new skills compared to the same skills in their younger years. So, better spend these 2 years focusing on the training and then the rest 10 enjoying the fruits rather than being frustrated 5 years later and wishing you would have put in the work ;)

I worked in Prudhoe Bay for 25 years for Worley, Peak and Halliburton it is the best place i have worked in my 50 years in the oilfield i am retired now but miss working there and the good friends i had there, i have been to remote locations that only a handful of people have ever been Good luck on you trip and be safe and careful

It looks so isolated and depressing. Like being on a space colony on a far away planet. And it looks like there was absolutely nothing to do there other then work. What did you guys do during your time off? Were there cheap flights to other cities in Alaska to go and visit? Just curious to know.

@@RemyCT63 The flight from Anchorage or Fairbanks to Deadhorse is provided by the company. It is a charter on a 737 and by far the fastest boarding. 15-20 minutes from opening the door to everyone seated ready to go; all oilfield workers. There are many people working up there that live in the lower 48. One guy I worked with lived in Hati. They have to purchase their own flights to and from Alaska. It seemed like everyone worked 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. The company I worked for they didn't pay travel time to the oil pads, so some days were long. Work schedules range from 6 weeks on 2 off to 2 weeks on 2 off. One summer I did 6 on 1 off. Many times, sometimes weeks at a time I had couple hours of work to perform in a 12 hour day. That made it boring and depressing. Housing, food, transportation is provided. My time off was spent catching up on chores and spending time with my family. There are only a few villages in Alaska not on the road system I would think about traveling to and they flights are sometimes more expensive than flying to Seattle. It was a cool experience working up there for 6 years, but I wanted to be closer to my kids as they grew up.

The desolate vibe here reminds me of my first night in Iceland last year, leaving the airport at 11 pm and seeing only an endless field of contorted grey-black stone receding into the gloom, and in the distance the flickering light of the volcano. It felt like entering Mordor, but was stunning in its own way.

Tip: When winching, put your hood up. If that cable lets go, you don't want to add a busted windshield to the mix. Same goes for guarding your back window when towing someone out of a fix.

I worked in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay for 6 years. 7-12 hour days 4 weeks on 2 weeks off. The only things I miss is working “night” shift during the summer (sun is out 24 hours), many northern light displays, wildlife, and learning about all the unusual machinery that is up there.

I know puppies are tough, but so worth it. I'm so happy you have a true companion on your travels. One that won't let you down like any human. Kids are 100 x the amount of responsibility... and losing yourself, your identity, your path - completely detours your life in a different direction. Also rewarding but you lose yourself for about 20 years or more just trying to provide a good life to another human that is completely dependent on you. XOXO You are doing great!

You’re an inspiration! I started watching when you got Odyssey in Mexico & have loved following your journey. Parenting a dog is rewarding. Parenting a dog without decent training is exhausting it’s entire life. Parenting a well behaved dog is exhausting during the first year and half & then it’s only rewards, with a little work to feed, walk, and get regular checkups. You’re doing a great job. You really need to get him steps or a ramp to walk into the truck on his own.

I became a Dog Dad just before the nation wide lock downs. I have since spent many hours training my pup. We have gone through every class Petsmart offers for dog training and we are repeating one of them starting this week. I can say it has fundamentally changed the way I think about every trip I take. Even the short drives to get errands done. I take him with me. Of course he ends up spending alot of that time in the vehicle ( yes I keep it running so he has the proper temp). However it enriches our lives to have one another. And I look forward to as many years as I am blessed with his love in my life. Taking the time to ensure he is a well behaved dog has been worth it. Keep taking the time, keep putting the effort in.

only 2 years??? my shepherds were a challenge for about 5 years. not that they caused problems, besides eating my house when i had to work, it was just the constant need for attention and all the energy that had to be burned off. it was fun most of the time but going out in the rain, snow, sleet, and hail wasn't much fun for me buy they loved it. the one thing you can be sure of with a dog is if there is mud anywhere near they will find it.

Its good to hear that Vilk is the #1, he wont be a puppy forever, and as somebody that lives on the road with a dog (Wired haired pointer) the effort early on pays itself back in the bulk of their lifetime. I'm over 6 years in now, and she's just so integrated into my lifestyle I don't have to expend all that mental energy thinking about her, or if she'll be OK. Keep it up, the rewards - especially once you are a year into this 2-3 year Pan American trip.

When I worked in Tuktoyaktuk over a winter driving the ice roads, it was amazing to me that if I stood in the Northern part of town towards the North Pole, there was nobody infront of me for thousands of KM.

Congratulations on reaching this achievement! I relate to your discussion on raising a pup, since I raised one myself when I was furloughed from a job in 1991. Mine was a lot simpler as I was at home and not traveling. Your choice of a German Shepard is ideal for your adventures - he will be protective and able to tolerate the wide range of climates you encounter. And from what I can tell in your videos, you are doing an excellent job with his training. Now for that new adventure - all the way to the southern tip of South America! Having taken 6 months to reach Prudhoe Bay, I imagine the next leg will require more than a year. I would guess roads in Central and South America will be much more challenging as well so maybe a year and a half. Best wishes and safe travels! We look forward to following your adventures!

Glad you were able to get a tour to the coast this time of year and got in and out before the snow set in. This was a good year to do this, we just finished paving the road for about 40 miles or so south from Deadhorse, it was pretty bad prior to that.

i totally understand your point with being a dog mum. When i adopted my dog, i really underestimated how much time i would need and how it would change my life, especially because she is a fear-driven and "aggressive looking" dog from a dog-killing-station in romania. i am happy with my decision but if i could turn back time, i probably would not have done it due to own freedom. but then i think about the benefits for my mentality, my learnings about dogs and patience, thinking about the really important things in life. I dont want to give her away, she deserves to stay in her home and with her familiy, she should never feel this lonely, hurt and abandoned again, so i have to keep my head up. this wonderful time will be over too soon and i should embrace it. you should too! it is a wonderful experience and as you say - expedition! This is a reaaaaallly amazing video(my thoughts at 6:52 seconds in). The viewer(me) can get a really good idea of what your travels are like and how unglamorous they are(you are no delirious RU-vidr who shows only the prettiest parts of the journey). Yet, you don't complain about how uncomfortable everything is because you are well educated and practiced(it's as if you're made for this). I shed a real tear when you jumped in and I'm very happy for you! Other random thoughts: Happy you reunited with your friends. If you think being a dog mom is 'draining' at times... well, if you partake in human parenthood it leaves room for nothing else at all for years and, you'll be happy you took these adventures first! I'm in awe at the quality of your videos. ☮

You explain wat it’s like raising a dog so well! I did a lot of research before I adopted my dog and I remember feeling prepared and confident when he got here. I had planned out how everything would go, the training I would do, which methods I wanted to use and the challenges I might face. However, I had no clue how much it takes mentally on the level you speak of. Like you said, often times you don’t even have space left to have thoughts for yourself. They do become the center and even though I wouldn’t want to miss him for a thing, it is quite taxing too. Thank you for putting it in words so well! I’m glad I’m not the only one going through that :)
