The majority of resellers could never ever niche down. Not everyone can get tons of 1 category. I live in the sticks and have to travel 30 minutes for a thrift store outside my town. That being said I've been a everything seller for 3 years now and support a family of 5 very comfortably. New sellers should use extreme caution trying to do only one category when first starting. That's very hard to do unless you got a very large sum of money to start out with

Yes, agree. Sometimes you get lucky, not always! But I’ve never sold toys. Then a real estate agent, cleaning out a house, brought out a box of Tyco radio controlled cars from the late 1990s. I was walking by the house when she said,” You want this?” I said, “Sure.” I took time to gently clean these up and install new batteries. To my surprise, the cars had perfect decals intact and ran fine! And the rest of the story is reselling history, or don’t look a gift horse (car) in the mouth.

I have a lot listed and it is a variety of things and have only made $700 combined from two different platforms that is only $140 a month. I am still in the red. I need it to sale because I need to help my son buy groceries so we can eat. I live with my son and he works full time at a good job. I have a masters degree but need the money to start using my degree. I want to start being a life coach and can't. I am deathly allergic to peanuts and can not just go get a job anywhere and no one will hire me for online jobs because they can not pay me what I am worth.

Exactly. There are 6 thrift stores within half an hour of me and there’s no one category that I could niche down if I wanted to. I wish it was possible but at the same time I make killer money selling everything and don’t kill it in one category at all. If I sell 10 things in a day 99% of the time it’s 10 different categories.

@@deborahlarive7711 may I offer a few tips? Platforms use algorithms. The more activity the better because it literally bumps your listings up so more people see them. To generate that activity: 1.) Mark down the prices on your current inventory to generate some sales. 2.) Keep listing new items at the same time. 3.) Or leave your prices the same and utilize ebay's "Ad Rate" on some of your listings. This is where you pay eBay to bump your items up. 4.) Research your items before listing if you don't already, so you know exactly what to price them at. 5). Share your listings even if you're only sharing them to yourself! It's activity. 6.) Stay positive. You can do this!

I started out the same way waitressing 3 nights a week and reselling on the side. When my part time reselling made me more than waitressing I quit and went in fulltime. You definitely get rewarded for the amount of effort you put in. Great video laying out how to start without jumping all in and failing.

Not everyone can source enough to be able to niche. BUT, this is an excellent video How To! Dalton, you leave no questions unanswered for those who want to know how to niche and the benefits! The time you save with your organization techniques is great knowledge! Also explaining how eBay is trending to look like individual stores is very important. Things change. eBay is rewarding sellers who do the things you do. You have a time saving technique with photographing, storage organization, shipping, and sourcing (of course some people, like me, have to work 5x as long as you do because we can’t niche to survive, but we recognize this and reluctantly spend time). People should particularly look at the shipping/price shipping aspect of niching. So many resellers who sold a wide variety of items-delicate or bulky comes to mind, are getting negatives or hit with excessive shipping costs because they miss judged a shipping price or packaged poorly.
@peanut924
@peanut924 Год назад
True point on the shipping aspect. I myself take a photo of the item on the scale and the measurements so that when I go to list I know exactly what to enter into the listing. I always add a pound for the box and packing material. Then I choose the best shipping method. As of 11/2022 for instance, UPS Ground is beating USPS on rates! The items are getting there in good time too, and no damage. Maybe next month it will be FedEx that's the best option. But like you said, Resellers definitely need to pay attention to this part of the process.

I don't niche down. Been doing this since 1998. I do have a LEAN- vintage media, because it's my jam- books, cassettes, VHS, CDs, DVDs- but I love browsing and finding anything that might sell- a plush, a toy, puzzles, games, tshirts, hats, lapel pins, key chains, craft stuff, measuring spoons and kitchen stuff, chotskies and knick knacks. 40% of what I sell is media, the rest is all over the place and I feel this works for me! But it's still hard because I'm only one person and have a disability. But it's what I know how to do so I keep going.

That's awesome you were able to niche down. I live in a city of 50k people in Wisconsin. I have 3 thrift stores in my city and 2 the next city over since Salvation Army closed down. So, I naturally became an everything seller as niches didn't really exist for me. Shoes you're lucky to see 20 pairs @ $14 that won't change from week to week. Electronics is either meh or mind-blowing. Clothing is $7 for a used graphic tee, $14 for jeans, so that leaves toys, games, kitchen, and hardware to look through. Media is already cherry-picked by Goodwill. I always make sure I leave with 1 to 2 items that will pay for all the inventory that trip. I have to say the only down side is finding boxes to fit odd sized items. Otherwise my photo, listing, and storage process is streamlined now. I group items when I get home by ready to list, ready to clean / test, or ready to research. Then I always have bins with different activities to do that I can visit in cycles so I don't have a death pile. I'm also surprised that big cities like Green Bay and Milwaukee have basically nothing worth flipping when I go, so I usually skip them now since it isn't worth the drive.

My problem is the Time Im working by myself I do everything and at the end of the day, I'm death soooo tired every day Monday thru Sunday. In the past, I try to sell full-time on eBay and I failed because I didn't have a lot of inventory. Right now I know what was my problem and I try to fix it. I'm buying lots of inventory. Im from Mexico living in Texas and I don't speak English very well and sometimes I have difficulty listing bc I don't know what to say about the product o the correct words to describe the product.

I see the word "hobby" being thrown around quite a bit in the video and in the comments. You can call your part-time reselling anything you want, but the IRS doesn't see it the same way. As a former tax preparer, I can tell you that if you're buying items with the express purpose of reselling those items for a profit you ARE a business in the eyes of the IRS, not a hobbyist. A lot of people start moaning about their 1099s etc. around tax time, when they should start acting like a business from day one. Get your ducks in a row and learn about bookkeeping or line up a bookkeeper before you get in too deep.

If it works for you, that is all that matters. I do believe EACH seller/reseller is different... their COSTS and SPACE is different... their experience, knowledge, and ABILITY is all different... their expenses and needs are different. Personally, I believe TOO FOCUSED on a niche, unless you have a replentishable supply, is akin to 'all eggs in one basket'. Also, 'the shoe racks' - really? SHM ~ again, IF it works for you, and YOUR APARTMENT CLOSET... that's what works for you. We have OVER 10,000 pairs of shoes... totes are the ONLY WAY that makes since for US. Inventory organization AND understanding SHIPPING (supplies & costs) is vital to reselling ANYTHING via any platform. Anyhow... best wishes, I see you adapting and improvising AS TIME PASSES and you learn MORE, or things require change.

Always a good thing to stay in certain categories. Notice I stated that with an S. Depending upon where you live, one can't concentrate on just one category. I live in an area where there is plenty, however many competitors have sprouted up in the last two years. If I was to sell shoes I would be lucky to find one or two pairs at any given thrift shop that would fit the profit margin I would need to resell and / or desirability (sell through rate). That's a lot of traveling to sell not much gross in one day - IF you can find anything. The reality of thrift...some days you remember as stellar but many (again, just talking about my area) you remember as, "Why did I spend so much time out there?" Yes, I'm a long time reseller, totally not new to this. I don't recommend this as a business for nearly everyone I talk to. I do tell people - thrift, have fun, flip it & go out to dinner or pay a bill or save for vacation or keep something special something for yourself. That's far more realistic.

All I have learned from other resellers is that you need to list on all platforms. You need to get your name in the spotlight by having a youtube account and continually do youtube videos. Now it seems that you need to do whatnot auctions several times a week. It seems knowing where to sell your stuff is in important. I learned that you can not rely on others to tell you what is a bolo because I bought the bolos and put them at the same price as they suggested and what was online and nothing. I hear a lot of crickets. I am running out food and it is getting hard to pay the bills. I live with my son and he has invested so much time money and energy into my ebay and mercari. I have to give him money back but no one is buying much of anything. I have made a total from both platforms $700 in 5 months that is $140 dollars a month. I am not paying myself and I am still in the red. I am also at the point where I will be listing my stuff on ebay at very bottom prices just to make some kind of money to buy food.

Disappointed. You should have titled this, "How to do a Shoe selling business online". You wasted 30 minutes of my time. Your Information is so scattered..you keep jumping around ..Etsy, ebay, coupons,eBay store, increasing storefront.

Ok learn editing for RU-vid. You are so self focused and long winded that I had to click out and move on. You take too long getting to the point because it looks like you really enjoy talking about yourself and hearing your own voice.

I lasted less than 2 minutes. Because when I heard you were gonna tell your life story I checked out. No one cares.

@@sundaywhiterabbit7679 What an entitled assumption to make about someone. If anything I think he comes across as relatable. Giving someone constructive criticism is one thing. You're approach..not so kind or relatable. Keep doing you Dalton!
